Start by checking whether the slowdown is Wi-Fi or your broadband service. A better router, Ethernet cable, or mesh system can improve local wireless coverage and reliability, but none can make your internet faster than the broadband connection entering your home.
1. Measure speed before buying anything
Test where you actually use the internet, not just beside the router. Run several speed tests in different rooms and note the results, the time, and whether each test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Repeat the same tests after making a change so you can tell whether it helped.
If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and run a test. A wired result that is healthy while Wi-Fi is poor in a distant room points toward a wireless coverage or interference problem. If the wired result is also below what you expect, restart your modem and router, then contact your internet service provider (ISP) if the problem continues. 2. Move the router to a better location
Try placement before spending money. Put the router in a central, elevated, open spot, rather than on the floor, inside a cabinet, or behind furniture. A signal has a harder time passing through thick walls and other obstructions. Keep the router away from metal objects, aquariums, microwaves, and other electrical equipment that could interfere with the signal.

Small placement changes can matter because distance, barriers, and interference affect Wi-Fi performance. Microsoft’s guide to Wi-Fi and home layout also recommends testing in multiple locations and checking again after changes.
3. Use Ethernet for devices that stay put
For a desktop computer, game console, or television that rarely moves, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable when practical. This removes the Wi-Fi link from that device’s connection and can improve consistency, especially where wireless reception is weak. Ofcom notes that “A wired connection is usually faster and more reliable” for suitable stationary devices: Ofcom’s guidance.

Ethernet does not increase the capacity of your broadband plan. It can make the connection between a device and router more dependable; your internet speed still depends on the service coming into the home.
4. Add mesh coverage if dead zones remain
If Wi-Fi is still weak in multiple rooms after you improve router placement, a mesh Wi-Fi system can extend coverage through more of the home. Mesh units work together to spread the wireless network beyond the main router. Ofcom describes two or three mesh boxes placed around the home as one possible way to reach more rooms, but the right layout depends on the building and system: Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi help page.

Place mesh units according to the system’s setup guidance; putting a unit in a dead zone may leave it with a weak connection to the rest of the network. Walls, floors, and the connection between units affect results. Mesh can improve coverage, but it does not upgrade your ISP plan or guarantee a particular speed increase.
5. Upgrade equipment or broadband only when the diagnosis points there
When a router replacement may help
An older router may be worth replacing if it lacks features your devices need, frequently disconnects, or cannot provide reliable coverage. Before choosing one, confirm it works with your ISP’s modem or service and check that your phones, computers, and other devices support the Wi-Fi generation or band you want to use. A new router cannot make an incompatible client use a newer standard.

Performance depends on more than the router: device capability, distance, frequency, obstacles, and interference all play a part. Google lists these factors in its troubleshooting advice for its own Nest and Google Wifi products; use that as a guide to possible causes, not as a comparison of router brands: Google’s Wi-Fi speed and performance guidance. For example, Microsoft notes that using 6 GHz requires both a Wi-Fi 6E router and a compatible client: Microsoft’s home-layout guide.
When to contact your ISP
If a direct wired test remains below expectations after restarting the equipment, the broadband service—not Wi-Fi coverage—may be the limiting factor. Ask your ISP to check the line and service before buying wireless hardware. If you are considering a different plan or provider, availability and consumer options depend on where you live. Ofcom’s advice is written for UK consumers; local rules and provider choices vary elsewhere.

Keep the router secure when upgrading
Speed is not the only reason to replace an old router. If yours only supports outdated WPA or WEP security, replacing it may be appropriate for security even if speed is not the problem. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, changing default administrator credentials, and keeping router firmware updated: FTC guidance on securing a home Wi-Fi network.
