When The Sims 4 will not open, the cause is usually one of four things: damaged EA app or game files, an outdated Mod, a corrupted file in the Sims 4 user folder, or a Windows/macOS compatibility problem. Start with the quick checks, then work through the fixes in order. Stop when the game launches normally.
Before troubleshooting: check the supported platform
The current PC version requires a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later, at least 4 GB of RAM, 25 GB of free storage, an additional 1 GB for custom content and saves, and a DirectX 11-compatible graphics device. Windows 32-bit, Windows XP, and Windows Vista are not supported.
On Mac, the minimum is macOS 10.15 Catalina with a Metal-compatible Mac, 4 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage plus 1 GB for custom content and saves. The Mac version is 64-bit.
Do not follow old advice telling you to install The Sims 4 Legacy Edition. EA stopped making Legacy Edition available on PC and Mac on December 12, 2022. It is no longer a current solution for 32-bit Windows or non-Metal Macs.

1. Restart the computer and check EA service status
Close The Sims 4 and the EA app completely, restart the computer, and try again. Also check EA’s service-status page before changing files. A service outage can prevent sign-in, downloading, or game startup; clearing a cache cannot repair an EA server outage.
If the EA app says you are offline, a game is missing from the Library, or a download is stuck at “Waiting for download,” continue with the cache reset below.
2. Clear the EA app cache
Cache data can become stale after an update or interrupted download. Clearing it does not uninstall your games or delete Sims saves.
Recommended Free Tools
If the EA app opens
- Open the EA app.
- On Windows, click the three dashes in the far-left corner. On macOS, use the Help menu at the top of the screen.
- Choose Help → App Recovery → Clear Cache.
- Allow the EA app to restart, then sign in and launch The Sims 4.
If the EA app will not open on Windows 10 or 11
- Open Start.
- Click All Apps → EA → App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache.
- When the EA app opens again, try The Sims 4.
On Mac, the cache process may request your Mac login password to authorize EALaunchHelper. This is your Mac password, not your EA Account password.
3. Repair The Sims 4 in the EA app
Repair checks the installed game files and replaces damaged or missing files. It does not repair a broken save, Mod, or Custom Content file in your Documents folder.
- Open the EA app and select Library.
- Find the The Sims 4 tile.
- Click the Manage icon or the three-dot menu on the tile.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the process to finish before launching the game again.
If Repair fails with a folder or permissions error, go to the installation-permission fix later in this guide.
4. Disable the EA in-game overlay
EA lists its in-game overlay as a possible cause of launch failures and crashes on PC. Disable it temporarily:

- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Open the EA app.
- Click your profile thumbnail.
- Choose Settings → Application.
- Turn In-game overlay off.
- Close and reopen the EA app, then launch The Sims 4.
This is the current EA app path. Instructions referring to an old Origin-specific overlay menu are outdated.
5. Test The Sims 4 without Mods or Custom Content
Mods are a frequent cause of a game that closes during startup, remains on a loading screen, or refuses to load a save. EA automatically disables Mods after a game update because a previously compatible Mod may no longer work. Script Mods are more likely than ordinary Custom Content to break game functions.
Mods can be used only on PC and Mac. They cannot be installed on PlayStation or Xbox.
Safely test after an update
- Start The Sims 4 with Mods disabled.
- Use Resume or Load Game and enter Live Mode.
- Play briefly to check whether the game is stable.
- Do not save during this test.
- Choose Menu → Exit Game, then confirm with Exit Game again.
Do not select Save and Exit while Mods and Custom Content are disabled. Doing so can remove that content from the saved game.

- Open Options Menu → Game Options → Other.
- Select Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Exit the game without saving.
- Relaunch The Sims 4.
Before restoring Mods, check the creators’ pages for versions compatible with your current game update. Your game version appears in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu.
Find the broken Mod with the 50/50 method
The Mods folder is at Documents → Electronic Arts → The Sims 4 → Mods. Extract ZIP or RAR downloads before testing them; the game cannot use the compressed archive as an installed Mod.
- Move every Mod out of the Mods folder to a temporary folder on the Desktop.
- Put approximately half of the Mods back.
- Launch the game and test it.
- If it fails, remove half of that group. If it works, test the other half.
- Continue halving the failing group until you identify the offending file.
Test Game Mods before ordinary Custom Content. EA lists error codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 as commonly associated with game-script problems in which a script Mod may be involved. Error 110 commonly appears after an update and can indicate outdated Mods.

6. Reset the Sims 4 user folder
If the game still will not load with Mods removed, a damaged save, Gallery download, cache file, or other user file may be responsible. The user folder is separate from the installed game, so repairing the game files will not fix it.
Back up first
- Open Documents → Electronic Arts.
- Copy the entire The Sims 4 folder to the Desktop.
- Rename the copy to something such as Sims 4 Backup.
Reset on Windows
- Close The Sims 4 and the EA app.
- Open Documents → Electronic Arts.
- Delete the The Sims 4 folder.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch The Sims 4 and test it before copying anything back.
Reset on Mac
- Close the game and EA app.
- In Finder, open Documents → Electronic Arts.
- Select The Sims 4 and press Command+Delete.
- Empty the Trash.
- Restart the Mac and launch the game.
The reset creates a new user folder without your old saves, Mods, or downloaded Gallery content. If the game now works, the problem is in the old user files. If it still fails, restore your backup because those files are not the cause.
Restore files selectively
Do not copy the entire backup back immediately. To test for a damaged save, copy only the backup’s saves folder into the newly generated The Sims 4 folder. If the failure returns, remove that folder and copy individual save files one at a time. The file added immediately before the failure returns is the likely suspect.
On Windows, to restore the complete backup, delete the newly generated The Sims 4 folder, empty the Recycle Bin, rename the backup to The Sims 4, and copy it into Documents → Electronic Arts.
7. Fix EA app permissions and installation errors
Run the EA app as administrator on Windows
- Close the EA app.
- Right-click its shortcut or executable.
- Select Run As Administrator.
- Try to repair or launch The Sims 4.
Resolve “Create Folder Error”
This error indicates that the EA app cannot write to the game directory.
- In File Explorer, right-click the Sims 4 installation folder and select Properties.
- Open Security → Advanced.
- Check whether the SYSTEM account has Full control.
- If it does not, choose Security → Edit → SYSTEM.
- Set Full control to Allow, then click Apply.
Check for the 4 GB download limit
If an EA app download always stops at exactly 4 GB, check the destination drive’s file system. FAT32 cannot store files larger than 4 GB. Install the game to an NTFS drive on Windows instead.
8. Reinstall the EA app if it is damaged
If the EA app displays EC:109 – App files are corrupted or will not start because files are missing, download a fresh copy from EA.com.

On Windows, uninstall it through Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program → EA app, then reinstall the latest EA app and sign in again. If you see EC:20:403, you are trying to use Origin on Windows; Origin is no longer available there, so install and use the EA app.
9. Address EC:10701 and port 3216 conflicts
EC:10701 – Communication error means the EA app could not run on port 3216. VPNs and virtual network adapters from Hyper-V, TAP-Windows, or VMware can interfere. Temporarily close the VPN and disable unnecessary virtual network adapters, then restart the EA app.

If the EA app remains on Preparing game, clear its cache, close background applications that limit EA app performance, install Windows and graphics-driver updates, and retry. If the problem persists, perform a clean boot to identify a conflicting startup application.
For a game that opens and then crashes, close overlays and background applications, repair the game, update the graphics driver, and try limiting the frame rate or enabling V-Sync. On a low-powered laptop, enable … → Game Options → Laptop Mode.

FAQ
Why does Sims 4 open and immediately close?
Common causes include an outdated Script Mod, damaged installed files, an EA overlay conflict, graphics-driver problems, or a corrupted Sims 4 user file. Test with Mods removed, repair the game in the EA app, disable the overlay, and reset the user folder if necessary.
Will repairing The Sims 4 delete my saves?
No. EA app Repair checks installed game files. Saves, Mods, and Custom Content are stored separately in Documents → Electronic Arts → The Sims 4. Back up that folder before performing more invasive troubleshooting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use Sims 4 Legacy Edition on an old computer?
No. EA stopped making Legacy Edition available on PC and Mac on December 12, 2022. The current game requires 64-bit Windows 10 or later, or Metal-compatible macOS 10.15 Catalina or later.
How do I know whether a Mod is stopping Sims 4 from launching?
Move the Mods out of Documents → Electronic Arts → The Sims 4 → Mods and launch the game without them. If it works, restore Mods in batches using the 50/50 method until the broken Mod is identified.
Why should I avoid saving while testing with Mods disabled?
EA warns that saving while Custom Content and Mods are disabled can remove that content from the saved game. Test Live Mode, then choose Menu → Exit Game instead of Save and Exit.
What does a Sims 4 download stuck at 4 GB mean?
The destination drive may be formatted as FAT32. FAT32 cannot handle files larger than 4 GB, so install the game to an NTFS drive on Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
For most launch failures, the shortest reliable sequence is: clear the EA app cache, repair The Sims 4, disable the EA in-game overlay, test without Mods, and reset the Sims 4 user folder with a backup. If a clean user folder does not help, focus on platform requirements, graphics drivers, permissions, EA app installation, VPN or virtual-adapter conflicts, and hardware limitations rather than repeatedly repairing the same save or Mod files.
