The right fix depends on what “lag” means in your game: choppy graphics, slow simulation, long loading, a freeze or crash, or a window that displays incorrectly. First identify the symptom, then compare your Mac with EA’s requirements and test one change at a time. EA’s published requirements are a useful baseline, not a guarantee that every qualifying Mac will run every save smoothly.
Identify what is lagging before changing settings
Use the symptom to choose a sensible first test. These clues help organize troubleshooting; they are not a diagnosis of your particular Mac.
- Choppy graphics or stuttering: Check your Mac against EA’s requirements and, especially on a laptop or a system near the minimum, try Laptop Mode.
- Slow simulation: If animations look smooth but time or in-game actions progress slowly, note whether it happens in one save or across clean tests. The official guidance cited here does not establish a specific cause for slow simulation.
- Long loading: Note whether loading is slow in the original user folder and in a clean test. Comparing those conditions can help isolate user data, but does not by itself identify a faulty file.
- Freezes or crashes: Back up your Sims 4 folder before testing a reset or changing which files are present.
- Display sizing or window trouble: Try window resizing or windowed mode; these are display adjustments, not a general fix for slow simulation.
Check your Mac against EA’s requirements
On your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Compare the macOS version, processor, memory, graphics support, and available storage with EA’s published Mac specifications. EA’s requirements page, shown as updated five months before the source was consulted, lists these specifications: The Sims 4 system requirements.

These are EA’s published specifications, not a performance benchmark or a promise that every save will run smoothly. If your Mac is close to the minimum or is a laptop, test Laptop Mode before concluding that you need different hardware. EA describes Memory Boost as PC-only, so it is not a Mac setting to try.

Try Laptop Mode for choppy graphics
EA recommends trying Laptop Mode on a laptop or a system near the minimum requirements. It is intended to improve frame rate and efficiency, but the result depends on your setup.
- In The Sims 4, open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Game Options.
- Check Laptop Mode and apply the change.
- Test the same save and location where you noticed the problem. Compare the result before changing another setting.
If graphics improve, you have a useful adjustment for that setup. If nothing changes, turn it off if you prefer the previous visual quality and continue with the relevant diagnostic test.

Back up and test the Sims 4 user folder
A reset can help determine whether files in the Sims 4 user folder are involved, but protect your progress first. EA’s reset guidance explains how to back up the folder, test a reset, and restore folders one at a time: Back up and reset The Sims 4.

- Quit The Sims 4.
- Make a separate backup copy of the Sims 4 folder and keep it untouched while testing. Do not begin by deleting saves.
- Follow EA’s reset instructions to create a clean test state, leaving your backup safe.
- Launch the game and check whether the symptom occurs in that clean state.
- If the clean state behaves better, restore backed-up folders incrementally, launching and testing after each restoration. This can narrow down which folder or file is associated with the issue.
If restoring a particular item brings the problem back, that narrows the investigation to that item or its interaction with the rest of your setup; it does not show that every save or file of that type is faulty. Preserve the separate backup while investigating.

Check mods and custom content separately
If the problem remains, or a clean test changes the result, test with mods and custom content out of the picture. EA’s backup and reset instructions include checking mods when problems continue. Keep your backup, temporarily remove mods and custom content from the test setup, and launch the game. If performance changes, reintroduce items gradually and test between additions to narrow down a possible conflict. This process identifies a lead; it does not mean a particular mod is broken until you have reproduced the problem with it.
Adjust the window for display-specific problems
If the issue is that the game window or image is sized incorrectly, EA suggests resizing the window or switching to windowed mode with Command + Control + F. On a Retina Mac, do not change Retina mode and resolution at the same time: make one display change, check the result, then decide whether to test another. Do not switch Sims 4 between 32-bit and 64-bit on Mac
EA states that the Mac version of The Sims 4 has always been 64-bit. There is no 32-bit/64-bit version switch for Mac players to use as a lag fix. See EA’s 64-bit version information.
