Fastfetch 2.70.0, released on October 14, 2026, removed {size-available} and the JSON fields bytes.available and bytes.used. To migrate safely, decide whether you need filesystem free space or space available to the current user, configure disk.useAvailable explicitly, and calculate used bytes as total - free from the remaining raw byte fields.
What changed in Fastfetch 2.70.0
The Disk module changed its field meanings and removed several compatibility fields. A script that worked on 2.69 or earlier can therefore fail in three different ways: a custom format can print an unknown placeholder, a JSON parser can receive missing properties, or a number can silently represent a different storage policy than before.

The official 2.70.0 changelog states that “bytes.free and bytes.total are unchanged; the used size can be derived as total – free.” That is the compatibility rule for JSON consumers and any script that needs a stable numeric calculation.

Choose the storage meaning before changing code
“Free space” can mean two different quantities. Filesystem free space is capacity the volume reports as unallocated. User-available space is what the current account can actually use after quotas and other access limits. They are often equal on an ordinary local disk, but they can differ on quota-controlled systems and network shares.

Do not replace the old token mechanically until this choice is documented. A replacement that displays correctly can still change the operational meaning of an alert if the old script expected whole-volume free space and the new host uses user-available space.
Audit every old field and placeholder
Start with a repository-wide search. Include shell scripts, service files, container definitions, dashboards, configuration templates, test fixtures, and documentation that contains executable examples.
- Search for
{size-available}. - Search for the JSON paths or keys
bytes.availableandbytes.used. - Search for code that parses
{size-free}or any human-readable output as a number. - Search for assumptions that a missing JSON property means zero, because that can hide a version mismatch.
- Record the Fastfetch version used by each job, host image, and test environment.
Classify each match as display-only, arithmetic, or JSON consumption. The correct fix depends on that classification; one replacement is not safe for all three cases.

Replace the removed placeholder
For a format that only prints a value to a terminal, replace {size-available} with {size-free}. Then set the Disk module’s useAvailable option explicitly so the same format has the same meaning on every host.

Keep human-readable output separate from calculations
Human-readable placeholders are presentation values. They may contain units, localized decimal marks, spacing, or rounding, so they should not be fed into arithmetic. If a screen display and a monitoring calculation need the same disk, configure a display format separately and obtain raw bytes for the calculation.
Move calculations to raw bytes
The raw byte placeholders remain {bytes-free}, {bytes-used}, and {bytes-total}. For scripts that need a numeric result, use those values rather than parsing {size-free} or another formatted field.
For versions and output paths where a used-byte value is not directly available, calculate it this way:
used_bytes = total_bytes - free_bytes- Keep all three values as integers.
- Perform the subtraction before converting to GiB, percentages, or decimal display units.
- Validate that
total_bytesandfree_byteswere actually returned. - Handle an unexpected negative result as an input or reporting error rather than clamping it silently.
Subtracting raw values also avoids discrepancies caused by independently rounded “free” and “used” strings.
Update JSON consumers
Read the surviving fields
In Fastfetch 2.70.0 JSON, read bytes.free and bytes.total. Derive the missing used value:

total = disk.bytes.total
used = total - freeThis is illustrative field logic, not a guarantee of one fixed surrounding object path. Generate JSON for the exact module selection you use with fastfetch --format json or fastfetch -j, inspect the nesting, and adapt the property path in your language.

A parser should distinguish “field absent because this is 2.70.0 or newer” from “malformed output” and “the module was not requested.” A practical flow is:
- Confirm that the Disk module exists in the selected output.
- Read
bytes.totalandbytes.freeas required numeric inputs. - If both exist, compute
used = total - free. - If only
bytes.usedorbytes.availableis present, handle it as a legacy-version branch only when your compatibility policy requires older Fastfetch releases. - If neither supported set is present, fail with a clear version or configuration error instead of reporting zero.
Do not assume a particular JSON nesting, module order, or field name beyond the documented Disk byte fields. A robust consumer selects the Disk object deliberately and verifies its schema.
Support more than one Fastfetch version
If one pipeline runs on mixed images, discover or record the version before choosing a parser branch. Fastfetch documents --version-raw as returning only major.minor.patch, which is suitable for scripts.
fastfetch --version-rawUse the result to select a 2.70.0-and-newer parser or a legacy parser, and keep the decision in one compatibility function rather than scattering version checks through alert and reporting code. Recording the version alongside each collected sample is also useful when a field change is suspected later.

Account for Windows quota behavior
On Windows 10 build 17763 and later, Fastfetch 2.70.0 corrected quota-related totals and now reports whole-volume capacity and free space by default. That default is appropriate when the report is meant to describe the volume itself, but it can differ from what a user or service account is allowed to consume.
Set disk.useAvailable: true when the intended result is space available to the current user, including quota-limited network shares. Make this an explicit policy choice in Windows configuration rather than assuming that a result matching an older release has the same semantics.
Test Windows separately from Linux and macOS. A script can pass on a local Linux filesystem and still produce an unexpected alert on a Windows share because quota-aware availability is not equivalent to whole-volume free capacity.

Include boundary checks for an empty disk, a nearly full disk, and a volume whose free value is affected by quota. Verify that a missing field causes an observable error, not a healthy-looking zero.

Troubleshoot common migration failures
The format prints the token or an empty value
Check for a remaining {size-available} reference. It was removed in 2.70.0. Replace it with {size-free}, then verify that the Disk module is enabled and that its option is spelled useAvailable.
The number changed after replacing the token
Inspect the configured policy. In 2.70.0, {size-free} follows disk.useAvailable; it is not inherently the old filesystem-free quantity. Decide whether the old report was intended to show whole-volume capacity or account-level availability, then set the boolean accordingly and document that decision.
The JSON parser reports missing properties
Remove dependencies on bytes.available and bytes.used. Read bytes.free and bytes.total, derive used bytes, and inspect the actual JSON nesting generated by fastfetch --format json or -j.
A percentage is slightly different from the terminal display
Calculate from unrounded integers and round only the final percentage. Comparing independently rounded human-readable fields can produce small differences even when the underlying capacity is correct.
Check adjacent 2.70.0 compatibility changes
Disk migration is not the only compatibility work in this release. While auditing a configuration or script, check these related changes:
QuickJS format scripting
QuickJS format scripting was removed in 2.70.0 after being deprecated in 2.69.0. Migrate those scripts to Lua rather than expecting the old QuickJS path to continue working.
Command module output setting
The Command option useStdErr became useOutput. The replacement accepts "stdout", "stderr", or "both"; "both" is now the default. Rename the option and choose the stream explicitly when a parser depends on one channel.
These checks matter because a deployment can appear to have a disk-format failure when the actual break is an adjacent removed option or a changed command-output stream.
