PuTTY’s “Network error: Software caused connection abort” message is Windows socket error 10053 (WSAECONNABORTED). It means an established SSH connection was terminated by software on the Windows computer after the connection stopped working, timed out, or hit a protocol problem. The code identifies the kind of socket failure, not the exact component at fault.

The cause may be the Windows client, a Wi‑Fi or VPN transition, a firewall or NAT device, a route change, the remote host, or an SSH-2 re-key exchange that exposed an already-degraded path. Work through the checks below in order so you can determine where the session failed instead of changing PuTTY settings blindly.

What error 10053 means in PuTTY

Windows names error 10053 WSAECONNABORTED. Microsoft defines it as an established connection aborted by software in the host computer, potentially because of a data-transmission timeout or protocol error. PuTTY describes the same message as a generic Windows networking error that kills an established connection.

That wording is important: “software” does not necessarily mean PuTTY itself. Windows may abort the socket after the network path disappears, after retries to the server receive no response, or after a protocol exchange cannot complete. A router, VPN, firewall, wireless access point, or remote SSH service can therefore be the event that led to the local abort.

Error 10053 is also different from a failure to start a session. It appears after PuTTY has an established connection and Windows decides that connection is no longer usable. The number is evidence of a socket-level termination, not a diagnosis such as “the server is down” or “PuTTY is defective.”

Where the connection can fail

Investigate all three sections of the path: the Windows computer running PuTTY, the network between the endpoints, and the remote host. The same 10053 dialog can result from faults in any of them.

Possible location What can happen Useful evidence
Windows client A local firewall, VPN client, interface change, sleep/resume event, or TCP timeout causes Windows to abandon the socket. Adapter and VPN event times, firewall changes, and whether other network connections dropped at the same moment.
Network path or middlebox Ethernet is unplugged, Wi‑Fi roams or sleeps, a route changes, or a firewall/NAT device removes an idle state. Reachability tests from the same computer, router or VPN logs, and a repeatable idle-time pattern.
Remote host or SSH service The server reboots, the SSH daemon stops responding, maintenance interrupts the service, or the host cannot receive the next packet. Server uptime, SSH service status, daemon logs, and reboot or maintenance records around the disconnect.
SSH protocol exchange An SSH-2 key re-exchange sends traffic and encounters a latent packet-loss or latency problem. Whether failures cluster around the configured re-key interval and whether the same path fails during other traffic.

Why an apparently idle PuTTY session can drop

Idle-state expiry in a firewall or NAT device

An SSH window can look idle while a stateful firewall, VPN gateway, or NAT router tracks the connection. If that device expires an idle state, the next packet may find that the path no longer exists. Windows then retries transmission and can eventually report 10053. This explains a session that fails after a similar period with no typing.

SSH-2 re-keying generates traffic

“Idle” does not mean “no packets.” SSH-2 periodically re-exchanges keys. PuTTY can send data for that operation even when you have not pressed a key. If the route has degraded, the re-key traffic can be the first packet that exposes the problem. A drop that repeatedly occurs at a similar point in long sessions deserves correlation with the profile’s re-key timing.

Keepalives can reveal or prevent an idle-path failure

PuTTY documentation records reports that keepalives fixed this error, because regular traffic can stop a middlebox from expiring an idle connection. The same traffic can also be the moment a dead route is detected. Consequently, a keepalive result is a useful experiment and mitigation, not proof that the server or route is healthy.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

1. Record exactly when and how the drop occurs

Before changing settings, note whether the failure is immediate, follows a stable idle period, happens while you are actively typing, or appears after a long session. Record the server name or address, SSH port, whether a VPN is connected, and the local network in use. If a second session to the same host fails at the same time, that points away from a single PuTTY window.

  • Immediate failure: concentrate first on address, port, service availability, and local policy.
  • After idling: concentrate on Wi‑Fi power changes, VPN/NAT/firewall state expiry, and keepalive behavior.
  • During active use: look for packet loss, route changes, and server load or restarts.
  • At a repeatable long-session time: compare the timing with SSH-2 re-keying.

2. Test reachability from the same Windows computer

Use the server address and port configured in PuTTY. A name-resolution or route problem can be identified separately from SSH authentication.

ping server.example.com
Test-NetConnection -ComputerName server.example.com -Port 22
tracert server.example.com

Test-NetConnection reports whether a TCP connection to the specified port can be made. Replace 22 if the profile uses another SSH port. A failed ping alone does not prove that SSH is unavailable because many networks block ICMP; use the TCP test and the PuTTY port value as the decisive check. Run the commands once while the session is healthy and again after a disconnect so the results are comparable.

3. Confirm that the expected SSH service is listening

Verify the host name or address and port in PuTTY’s Session settings. On the server, check that the SSH service is running and listening on that port. If you administer a Linux host, the service manager and the SSH daemon’s normal authentication or system logs can show a stop, restart, rejected connection, or host reboot. On another operating system, use its service console and event logs.

A server that is down, rebooting, or no longer listening cannot be repaired by a PuTTY keepalive. Capture the service status and the timestamp of any restart before changing the client profile.

4. Check local network changes around the timestamp

Look for events that can invalidate an established TCP path:

  • Ethernet cable removal or a switch-port change.
  • Wi‑Fi roaming between access points, signal loss, or adapter power saving.
  • A VPN disconnect, reconnect, or change of tunnel route.
  • A Windows firewall or endpoint-security policy update.
  • A router or NAT reboot, WAN failover, or expired idle state.
  • Laptop sleep, wake, docking, or undocking.

Compare the time of the PuTTY dialog with Windows network-event logs, VPN logs, and router records when available. If every network application loses connectivity at that time, PuTTY is only reporting the consequence.

  • Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.

5. Inspect the remote host at the same time

Check uptime, planned maintenance, resource pressure, and the SSH daemon’s logs for the disconnect interval. A reboot or service restart can terminate all established sessions. If only one account or one source address is affected, also check host firewall rules, connection limits, and security software events.

Do not infer a server fault solely from 10053: the client may have lost the route before the server saw the final packet. Use the server log as one piece of time-correlated evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test PuTTY keepalives for an idle-session pattern

In PuTTY’s configuration window, open Connection and locate Seconds between keepalives. Enter a small, regular interval for a test session, reconnect, and leave it idle long enough to cover the period in which it normally fails. If the session remains stable, repeat the test to determine whether the result is consistent.

  1. Open PuTTY and load the affected saved session.
  2. Select Connection in the left-hand category list.
  3. Set Seconds between keepalives to a modest interval rather than leaving it disabled.
  4. Return to Session, select the saved profile, and choose Save if the test improves reliability.
  5. Record the interval and the observed idle duration so the change can be correlated with the network equipment’s behavior.

Keepalives create traffic; they do not restore a disconnected server, repair a broken route, or override a firewall that blocks the session. If the server is unavailable, a keepalive merely makes the failure visible sooner.

7. Correlate failures with SSH-2 re-keying

If the session fails after a long, repeatable interval even when keepalives are enabled, compare that interval with the profile’s SSH-2 key-exchange or re-key schedule. PuTTY identifies re-keying as a point at which this error can occur because data is sent for the exchange.

First investigate packet loss, latency, VPN stability, and middlebox behavior. Do not weaken or disable SSH security settings simply to avoid the symptom. A security change can hide the timing trigger while leaving the underlying path failure intact.

8. Retest one change at a time

Reconnect after each change and preserve the timestamp, idle duration, network type, and test results. Changing the VPN, router, firewall, keepalive interval, and re-key settings simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause. Once a setting consistently helps, save the PuTTY profile and document why it was changed.

Observed pattern First action Security impact Evidence produced
Fails immediately after connecting Verify the address and port, run a TCP reachability test, and confirm the remote SSH service is listening. Preserves SSH security settings. Port-test result and service status.
Fails after a repeatable idle period Check Wi‑Fi/VPN/NAT/firewall events, then test a small PuTTY keepalive interval. Keepalives preserve encryption and authentication; they add periodic traffic. Idle-time comparison and network-device logs.
Fails when Wi‑Fi, VPN, or docking changes Stabilize or reconnect the affected interface and compare the event timestamp with the dialog. No SSH-setting change is required. Windows adapter and VPN event records.
Fails around SSH-2 re-keying Correlate the interval, then investigate packet loss and latency on the path. Keep the configured re-key and key-exchange protections while diagnosing. Repeatable timing and path-quality observations.

Common wrong turns

Assuming “software” means PuTTY is buggy

The PuTTY manual characterizes 10053 as a generic Windows network error and says it is generally not evidence of a PuTTY defect. Start with reachability, path changes, and the remote service before reinstalling the client.

Changing security settings before collecting evidence

Disabling re-keying or weakening cryptographic choices may alter the timing without fixing the route or packet loss. Keep the normal SSH-2 protections while you compare logs and repeat the test.

Treating one successful keepalive test as a complete diagnosis

A keepalive can prevent an idle state from expiring, but it can also expose a dead path. Confirm the result across more than one idle period and check whether the server and route were healthy during the test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing from a different network and assuming the original is fixed

A mobile hotspot, office VPN, and home Wi‑Fi can take different routes and use different middleboxes. A successful connection elsewhere is useful comparative evidence, not proof that the original path has recovered.

Ignoring the configured port

Testing port 22 while PuTTY uses a nonstandard port can produce a misleading result. Always copy the port from the PuTTY profile into the TCP test.

How to document the incident for an administrator

Provide a compact timeline rather than only the dialog text. Include:

  • PuTTY version and the saved session’s host, address, and port.
  • The exact UTC or local timestamp and whether the session was idle or active.
  • Whether Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, a VPN, sleep/resume, or docking was involved.
  • The output of the TCP reachability test before and after the failure.
  • Any repeated idle or re-key interval.
  • Remote uptime, SSH-service status, and relevant daemon or maintenance events.
  • The keepalive interval tested and whether the result reproduced.

This information lets an administrator decide whether to inspect the client, a middlebox, or the remote host instead of treating every 10053 report as the same problem.

When the error is resolved

Consider the issue understood when the session remains stable under the same workload and network conditions that previously caused the drop, and the supporting evidence identifies the changed component or condition. If a keepalive is the lasting mitigation, retain the documented interval and confirm that the additional traffic is acceptable for the server and network. If the route or service was repaired, remove temporary diagnostic changes and leave the normal SSH security configuration in place.

The key distinction is between preventing an idle path from expiring and restoring a path or service that is unavailable. Error 10053 can report either outcome, so the reliable fix comes from matching the timing and evidence to the location of the failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PuTTY error 10053 the same as an authentication failure?

No. Error 10053 is reported after an established socket is aborted. Authentication errors occur during SSH login and have different messages and evidence.

Should I disable SSH-2 re-keying to stop the disconnect?

Do not use that as the first remedy. Correlate the timing with re-keying and investigate packet loss, latency, VPN behavior, or the remote service while retaining the configured security protections.
