If NGINX returns 404 or 403 for a CSS file, JavaScript bundle, uploaded photo, or other image, start with the request-to-filesystem mapping—not application code. NGINX chooses the most specific matching location, builds a local path with either root or alias, checks the filesystem, and then applies permissions, MIME mappings, and any fallback rules. A wrong location or path produces a predictable miss; logs show which failure actually occurred.
This guide gives a repeatable way to find the failing rule, calculate the path NGINX is using, correct root or alias, make missing-file behavior explicit with try_files, and verify the final response.
What NGINX must do before an image can load
For a request such as GET /media/products/red-chair.jpg, NGINX performs several decisions in order:
- It selects a
serverblock for the host and port. - It selects the most specific
locationthat matches/media/products/red-chair.jpg. A matching regular-expression location can take precedence over a prefix location, so do not assume that the visiblelocation /media/block is the active one. - It converts the URI into a filesystem path using the active
rootoralias. - It tests, opens, and returns the file, or passes the request to a fallback.
- It supplies a response status and a
Content-Typebased on the loaded MIME map.
A 404 normally means that the selected rule did not find the expected file. A 403 normally means NGINX found a path but could not traverse a directory or read the file, or that a host security policy blocked access. The status narrows the search, but the error log identifies the exact open-path failure.

Root and alias: the path difference that causes most 404s
Both directives associate a URL location with local files, but they construct the path differently.

When root is the right choice
Use a server-level root when your files live beneath one site directory and the URL path should be preserved. With:

root /var/www/site;
}a request for /static/css/app.css resolves to /var/www/site/static/css/app.css. The same rule resolves /media/photo.jpg to /var/www/site/media/photo.jpg. Before changing configuration, check that those exact directories and filenames exist, including capitalization.
When alias is the right choice
Use an alias when the URL prefix is not part of the on-disk path. For example, /media/ can expose files stored in /srv/app/uploads/ without requiring a physical /srv/app/uploads/media/ directory. The matching prefix is replaced, not appended.
Keep the slash convention consistent. A location written as /media/ should normally use an alias ending in /, then validate the result against a real filename. Replacing root with alias is not a neutral change: it changes the path calculation and can turn a working request into a 404.
A diagnostic workflow that isolates the fault
1. Capture one exact failing request
Copy the image URL exactly as the browser requests it, including the path, capitalization, and any URL-encoded characters. Record the status with:

curl -I https://example.test/media/products/red-chair.jpgYou can also use the browser’s developer tools and inspect the request in the Network panel. Do not test only the page URL; the page can return 200 while an individual image request returns 404 or 403.

2. Identify the active server and location
Find the server block handling the request’s hostname and port. Then list every candidate location that could match the URI. Check for:
- A longer prefix such as
location /media/products/that outrankslocation /media/. - A regular-expression location that captures image extensions or a general file pattern and overrides the prefix location.
- A redirect or rewrite that changes the URI before file lookup.
- A nested location or included file that defines another rule with the same path.
The rule you are reading may not be the rule NGINX loaded. Treat the effective configuration, not an editor tab, as authoritative.
3. Calculate the expected filesystem path
Write down the URI and perform the mapping by hand. For root /www/data, /images/a.png must be /www/data/images/a.png. For location /media/ { alias /srv/app/uploads/; }, /media/a.png must be /srv/app/uploads/a.png.

Compare that calculated path with the actual file. Check every directory component, filename case, extension, mount point, and symlink target. A file named Red-Chair.JPG is not the same as red-chair.jpg on a case-sensitive filesystem.
4. Validate the configuration before reloading
Run:
nginx -tDo this before every reload. If the test fails, correct the syntax or the referenced include first; a reload cannot apply a configuration that fails validation.
Included files can hide the rule that is actually loaded. Inspect the include directives and the files they reference. nginx -V can reveal the compiled configuration path, which helps you locate the correct main file when multiple installations or configuration trees exist.
5. Make file lookup explicit with try_files
try_files checks whether a file or directory exists and then uses the first matching candidate or an explicit fallback. For direct static serving, use:

try_files $uri $uri/ =404;This turns a missing image into an intentional 404 instead of allowing an unrelated rewrite or application route to obscure the cause. If your design requires an application fallback for missing files, replace =404 with the fallback URI appropriate to that application, and make that choice deliberate.
6. Read both logs for the same request
NGINX’s Beginner’s Guide recommends checking access.log and error.log when something does not work as expected. Match the timestamp and URI in both files. A typical workflow is:
tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/nginx/error.logThe access log confirms the status returned to the client. The error log often reports the path NGINX attempted to open and the operating-system error. A 404 sends you back to location selection, path construction, filename, and mounts. A 403 sends you to directory traversal, file-read permissions, and host security policy.
7. Check MIME mappings
Once the file is found and readable, NGINX still needs the MIME map loaded in the HTTP context. The documented mappings include image types such as image/gif and image/jpeg. If the map is missing or not included, an existing image can be returned with a generic type rather than the expected media type.

Confirm that your configuration loads the MIME file in the http block and that the relevant extension is mapped. Do not diagnose a missing MIME type as a missing file: the status and body can prove that the file was served even when Content-Type is wrong.
8. Retest the exact URL and inspect the response
After making one focused change, run nginx -t, reload NGINX, and request the same URL again. Check all three:
- HTTP status, such as 200, 403, or 404.
Content-Type, such asimage/jpegorimage/png.- Body length, to ensure the response contains the image rather than an HTML error page.
For a compact header-and-length check, use:

Use root when URL and disk layout match

}This configuration expects /var/www/site/static/... and /var/www/site/media/... to contain the requested files. Because the server-level root is inherited, each location can focus on lookup behavior.

Use alias when uploads live elsewhere

}Here, /media/photo.jpg is checked as /srv/app/uploads/photo.jpg. Test the mapping with a filename that really exists. If your calculated path unexpectedly contains an extra media directory, the directive choice or slash convention is wrong.

An alias location does not merely override the directory portion of a root path. It changes how the location prefix is handled. Document the expected URL-to-file mapping beside the block so a later edit does not reintroduce the wrong assumption.
Why a 404 persists after the file was uploaded
The upload path differs from the served path
Applications often save uploads under one absolute directory while the public URL uses another prefix. Compare the application’s actual save directory with the path calculated from NGINX’s root or alias. A successful database record or upload response does not prove that NGINX can see the same mount point.
The request is handled by another location
Image-specific regular-expression locations, language or front-controller rules, and longer prefixes can intercept the request. Inspect all included configuration files and verify the matching order rather than adding another broad location and hoping it wins.
The filename is not byte-for-byte identical
Check case, URL encoding, spaces, Unicode characters, and generated extensions. The browser may request a normalized or transformed name that is different from the stored file. The error log’s open path is useful because it shows what NGINX actually attempted.
The filesystem is not mounted in the NGINX environment
Containers, chroots, network mounts, and service-specific namespaces can expose different paths to the NGINX worker than to an interactive shell. Verify the path from the same runtime environment and confirm that the mount is present after restart.

Directory traversal permission is missing
The NGINX worker needs execute permission on every parent directory to traverse the path and read permission on the file. Grant the minimum access required to the service account; do not make an entire upload tree world-writable just to remove a 403.

The file itself is unreadable
Check the owner, group, and mode for the image. A deployment process may create new uploads with permissions that differ from older files. Correct the deployment or upload umask so future files receive a readable mode, rather than repeatedly repairing individual images.
A host security policy blocks access
Mandatory access controls or another host security policy can deny a path even when Unix ownership and mode bits look correct. The NGINX error log may show a permission denial, while the host’s security audit log identifies the policy rule. Adjust policy labels or rules according to your operating system’s documented procedure.
A directory request is being treated as a file request
If a URL ends at a directory and directory listing is not enabled, NGINX may return an error instead of an index. Use explicit filenames for media URLs and keep try_files behavior intentional; do not enable directory listing as a general fix for broken images.
Direct static serving versus an application fallback
Choose the behavior that matches the purpose of the URL.

For ordinary images, direct serving is usually easier to reason about. A fallback is appropriate only when the application deliberately owns that URL space. Keep the fallback explicit so a typo does not silently become an HTML page or an unrelated application response.
Configuration and testing checklist
- Capture the exact failing image URL and status.
- Confirm the selected
serverblock and the most specificlocation. - Check whether a regular-expression location overrides the prefix you expected.
- Calculate the local path using the actual
rootoraliasrule. - Verify the file, case, extension, mount, and symlink target at that path.
- Inspect included configuration files and use
nginx -Vif the main configuration path is unclear. - Run
nginx -tbefore reloading. - Use
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;for explicit direct-file behavior. - Match the request in
access.loganderror.log. - For 403, check parent-directory traversal, file readability, and host security policy.
- Confirm that the HTTP context loads MIME mappings for the image extensions you serve.
- Retest the same URL and verify status,
Content-Type, and body length.
How to read the final result
A successful fix has a simple, testable chain: the intended location matches, the calculated path names the real file, NGINX can traverse and read it, and the response carries the correct image MIME type. If any link fails, return to that specific layer instead of changing permissions, rewrites, and application routing at the same time. This preserves the evidence in the logs and prevents a temporary workaround from hiding the original path error.
