If your Bukkit, Spigot, or compatible Minecraft server stops while Dynmap is rendering, stop the active render first, then determine whether the failure is memory exhaustion, excessive render concurrency, a full disk, or a hosting limit. Full and radius renders are substantially heavier than normal update renders. Reduce Dynmap’s render thread count so it does not exceed your CPU cores, increase the render interval if it is too aggressive, give the JVM adequate memory without starving the operating system, and perform large renders offline or in small regions.

The exact fix depends on the log message. A Java heap or garbage-collection error points to memory; a full filesystem points to storage; a long-running render with high CPU points to render concurrency. Older community reports describe all three patterns, but they do not establish one universal Dynmap bug or a maintainer-issued fix for every current version.

Stop the crash loop safely

When a full render is still running, repeated restarts can make the situation worse: Dynmap may resume work while the server is already low on memory or disk space. Stabilize the server before changing several settings at once.

  1. Cancel or pause the render. From the server console, use the Dynmap command shown by /dynmap help. On versions that expose it, /dynmap cancelrender cancels the current full or radius render. If the process is unresponsive, stop the server cleanly rather than repeatedly killing the Java process.
  2. Copy the latest logs. Preserve the complete console output, including the first error and the lines immediately before the shutdown. The final line is often only a consequence of the original failure.
  3. Check available storage. Make sure the filesystem containing the server, Dynmap tile directory, and logs has substantial free space. A nearly full disk can prevent tile writes, log writes, and normal database operations.
  4. Restart without starting another full render. Confirm that players can join and that the server remains stable for several minutes before testing a smaller render.
  5. Back up the world and Dynmap data. Copy the world, plugins/dynmap, and configuration files before editing them. Do not delete tile data until you know whether it is needed for recovery.

Why Dynmap rendering can take down a Minecraft server

Dynmap converts blocks and terrain into map tiles. A render must load chunks, calculate visible surfaces for one or more perspectives, encode image tiles, and write those tiles to storage. That work competes with the Minecraft tick loop, plugin tasks, garbage collection, disk I/O, and, when enabled, the web map.

A normal update render usually processes only changed areas. A full render walks the entire configured map, while a radius render can still cover a very large area around a point. Dynmap’s configuration documentation notes that changing the render thread count has a major effect on server performance during full and radius renders, but only a marginal effect on update renders. The practical consequence is that a configuration that feels harmless during ordinary play can become unstable when a fullrender is launched.

Render type What it does Risk during live play
Update render Processes changed or queued areas as the world changes. Usually the smallest sustained load; thread-count changes have a marginal effect compared with full renders.
Radius render Renders a selected distance around a location. Can be heavy when the radius covers many chunks; load rises with area and enabled maps.
Full render Traverses the complete selected world or map. Highest combined CPU, memory, chunk-access, tile-write, and runtime pressure.

A crash after several hours is therefore not proof that the initial command was invalid. The server may remain alive until accumulated tile work, Java heap pressure, garbage-collection pauses, or storage consumption crosses a limit.

Use the log to identify the failure class

Look for the first resource or exception message, not merely the shutdown notice. The following table maps common evidence to the next diagnostic step.

Log or system symptom Most likely area What to verify next
OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, allocation failures, or the process being killed with memory usage near its limit JVM heap or host memory exhaustion Record the configured -Xmx, actual resident memory, other plugins, and the size of the render. Reduce concurrency and increase the memory limit only if the host has room.
GC overhead limit exceeded during a full render Heap pressure and repeated garbage collection Lower Dynmap render concurrency, stop other memory-heavy tasks, and review the JVM heap allocation.
Write failures, “no space left on device,” or a crash that coincides with a full tile directory Disk exhaustion Check the filesystem that contains Dynmap’s tile path, not just the directory where the server jar resides.
Long pauses followed by a watchdog message A tick or host stall; Dynmap may be a contributor Measure the pause and inspect thread and system logs. No verified source in this guidance connects the Minecraft watchdog specifically to Dynmap rendering.
Clean process exit with no Java exception while hosted remotely Provider limit, operating-system kill, container policy, or external supervisor Check host-side events, memory limits, scheduled restarts, and service-manager logs.

Community reports include a SpigotMC user rendering a roughly 9,000-block world on 5 GB of RAM who ran out of memory and resolved the problem by allocating substantially more memory. A separate GitHub issue describes a GC-overhead-limit error during a full render. These reports show plausible failure modes, not a guaranteed minimum or a universal memory requirement.

Set Dynmap render threads to a safe value

The most direct Dynmap control is the render thread count. Dynmap’s documented guidance is to match the number of threads to the number of tiles rendered at once and never set it above the number of available CPU cores. When the setting is left unset, Dynmap uses approximately half of the CPU cores by default.

Find the setting

  1. Stop the server before editing configuration.
  2. Open the Dynmap configuration file, normally plugins/dynmap/configuration.txt. Some releases place or generate settings differently; use the key and comments in the configuration shipped with your installed version.
  3. Locate the render-thread setting, commonly named renderthreadcount. Keep the spelling used by your file. If the file documents a different key, use that documented key rather than creating a second, ignored option.
  4. Set a conservative integer, save the file, and restart the server. Do not edit the file while Dynmap is actively rendering.

Choose the number

Count physical or assigned CPU cores available to the Minecraft process. A four-core host should not be given more than four render threads; a two-core container should not be configured as if it had the host’s full CPU. If the default is half the cores, a four-core machine normally starts near two render threads. For a server that must keep ticks responsive, begin below the ceiling and increase only after a controlled test. More threads can shorten a render but also increase simultaneous chunk work, image encoding, allocation, and contention with the main thread.

The phrase “tiles rendered at once” matters. Setting four threads because the machine has four cores is a maximum boundary, not a promise that four is optimal. If your hosting plan assigns two virtual CPUs, use two as the hard limit even if the physical host has more. If other services share the machine, leave additional headroom.

Increase the render interval when updates are too frequent

Dynmap’s renderinterval controls how often queued render work is scheduled. The documented default is 0.5 seconds. A value that is too low can create extra server load by checking and dispatching work more often than your hardware can comfortably absorb.

  1. Stop the server and open the Dynmap configuration.
  2. Find renderinterval and record its current value.
  3. Raise it gradually rather than making a large change without testing. The correct value depends on world activity, CPU allocation, enabled maps, and how quickly tiles are being generated.
  4. Restart, monitor tick time and memory during ordinary play, then test a small radius render.

Changing this interval is primarily a load-smoothing measure. It does not make a full render small; it spaces work so that the game loop has more opportunity to run. If crashes occur only during a fullrender, thread count and available memory usually deserve attention at the same time.

Give Java enough memory without starving the host

Dynmap needs memory for chunk data, map calculations, image buffers, plugin state, and tile or database operations. Minecraft itself and other plugins also consume the heap. Increasing the JVM limit can resolve genuine exhaustion, but assigning all host RAM to Java can trigger operating-system kills, swap thrashing, or failures in the web server and monitoring tools.

Measure before changing flags

  • Record the current -Xms and -Xmx values from the startup command or service definition.
  • Observe heap use while the server is idle, during normal play, and during a small render.
  • Compare the Java limit with the host or container memory limit, leaving room for the operating system, native memory, file cache, and any separate web service.
  • Keep a copy of the original startup command so you can roll back a change.

Use your host’s documented method to raise -Xmx; control panels often expose a memory field, while a systemd service or shell script may contain a command such as java -Xms... -Xmx... -jar server.jar nogui. The ellipses are intentional: choose values based on the limit actually assigned to your server, not on a generic copy-and-paste number.

If the log reports GC overhead rather than a simple heap-space error, adding memory alone may not be enough. Lower renderthreadcount, stop the render, and retest. A slower render that leaves the tick loop responsive is preferable to a faster render that forces continuous garbage collection.

Render large worlds offline or in controlled regions

Running a full render while players are active is the highest-risk workflow. A practical operating procedure separates bulk generation from normal gameplay.

Offline full-render procedure

  1. Announce maintenance and stop player access.
  2. Make a verified backup of the world and Dynmap data.
  3. Confirm free disk space and check the configured JVM memory.
  4. Start the server in a maintenance window with render threads at a conservative value.
  5. Launch the full render for one world or map, not every world simultaneously. Use the command syntax reported by /dynmap help; commonly this is /dynmap fullrender <world>.
  6. Watch console output, heap use, CPU saturation, disk growth, and the operating-system event log. Stop if memory climbs continuously, GC pauses expand, or free space approaches the host’s safety threshold.
  7. After completion, let the server idle and verify that new tiles can be viewed before reopening the server.

Live-server alternative

If downtime is not possible, render a small radius at a time and schedule work during the quietest period. A SpigotMC discussion describes cancelling a full render on a live server after enough of the map had been generated. That is a community workaround, not an official Dynmap fix, and it does not remove the underlying resource pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a written record of the last completed region so that an interrupted job can be resumed in smaller sections. Do not repeatedly restart the same failing fullrender without changing its workload or resource conditions.

Free disk space and control tile growth

Rendered maps can consume far more storage than expected because each zoom level and perspective creates additional tiles. The map image directory, cache, database, logs, and world files may all share one filesystem.

  1. Check free space with the operating-system tool appropriate to your host, such as df -h on Linux or the drive properties screen on Windows.
  2. Identify Dynmap’s configured tile path and measure it separately from the world directory.
  3. Remove only known temporary files or old backups after confirming they are not needed. Do not delete active tile databases while Dynmap is running.
  4. Rotate or archive logs and move backups to another volume when appropriate.
  5. Rerun a small render and verify that tile-write errors no longer appear.

GitHub issue 314 documents a Dynmap 0.20 crash associated with the server running out of space. The version is old, but the failure mechanism remains relevant: any plugin that cannot write its output can cause secondary errors or an apparently spontaneous shutdown.

Separate web traffic from the game process when necessary

Dynmap can serve its map through the Minecraft process. An FTB forum participant suggested serving rendered tiles from a separate web server so that HTTP traffic does not compete with the game process. This is an anecdotal architecture suggestion, not a demonstrated fix for render crashes.

Consider separation only after render concurrency, memory, and disk have been measured. You must preserve correct tile paths, permissions, cache headers, and access controls. Moving web delivery does not reduce the CPU and memory required to generate tiles, so it cannot substitute for lowering render load.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Check the hosting environment for external kills

Reports from a DigitalOcean question and an FTB forum describe Bukkit servers quitting while Dynmap was rendering. Such reports do not prove that Dynmap itself issued the termination. A container may have a hard memory limit, a provider may enforce CPU or process policies, or a supervisor may restart a service after a health-check timeout.

Understand watchdog messages and thread priority

A Minecraft watchdog usually reports that the main thread failed to complete a tick in time. Heavy rendering can contribute to long ticks, but no verified source here establishes a Dynmap-specific watchdog trigger. Treat the watchdog entry as evidence of a stall and investigate thread contention, garbage collection, disk latency, and other plugins rather than assuming the watchdog is the root cause.

Dynmap also exposes usenormalthreadpriority. Enable it only when you understand the scheduler effect and have a reason to test it. The Dynmap Base Plugin Settings documentation notes that most Linux JVMs ignore thread-priority settings, so this option may have little or no observable effect on such systems. It is not a replacement for a safe render-thread count.

Account for version age and missing official fixes

Many crash reports were written for older Dynmap, Bukkit, or Java versions. Configuration names, tile backends, and memory behavior can change. Before applying a workaround from an old forum thread, record your Dynmap version, server implementation, Java version, operating system, and the exact render command. Then check current Dynmap issue discussions for your release.

No maintainer-issued fix for the specific “server crashes when Dynmap renders” symptom is established by the available evidence. That does not mean a current release is defective; it means the symptom has multiple possible causes and should be diagnosed from logs and resource measurements.

Choose the next action from the symptom

What you observe First change Second check
Heap-space or GC-overhead errors Lower render threads and stop the full render. Raise the JVM memory limit only within the host’s real capacity.
CPU saturation and severe tick delay with no heap error Set render threads at or below assigned CPU cores. Increase the render interval and use smaller radius jobs.
“No space left” or tile-write failures Free or expand the filesystem containing Dynmap tiles. Repeat a small render and watch disk growth.
Crash only during a fullrender on a live server Cancel it and run the job offline or in bounded regions. Compare behavior with one map and conservative concurrency.
Clean exit on managed hosting Inspect provider and operating-system events. Verify memory, CPU, quota, and supervisor limits.
Watchdog report without a clear resource error Capture the thread dump and timing around the stall. Investigate disk latency, garbage collection, and other plugins; do not assume Dynmap alone is responsible.

A reliable recovery sequence is therefore: stop the render, preserve the evidence, verify storage and host limits, reduce render concurrency, moderate the render interval, and test a small workload before attempting another full map. This approach addresses the documented Dynmap controls while keeping uncertain watchdog and hosting explanations separate from confirmed memory and disk failure modes.
