JavaScript throws “Cannot read properties of undefined” when code tries to read a property from a value that is undefined. Find the failing access in the stack trace, inspect the value immediately before the dot or bracket, then trace that value to its source. Use optional chaining only when missing data is a valid state; validate required data instead of hiding the defect.

What the error means

undefined has no properties. If code tries to access one, JavaScript throws a TypeError. The message’s property name points to the access that failed, but it does not necessarily identify where the undefined value came from. For example, Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'x') indicates an attempted read of x from an undefined value. Other browsers may phrase the same kind of error differently. MDN Web Docs summarizes the underlying issue: “Both null and undefined have no properties you could access.” MDN’s error reference was modified July 8, 2025.

How to find the undefined value

  1. Read the full stack trace. Open the first relevant frame in your application’s code, rather than guessing from the message alone. If the error occurs in a browser extension, inspect the logs and errors for the component where it happened; Chrome’s extension debugging guide describes that workflow.
  2. Locate the exact property access. In order.customer.name, for instance, determine which expression immediately to the left of the failing property is undefined. If the reported property is name, inspect order.customer; if the failure occurs while reading customer, inspect order.
  3. Trace that value upstream. Check the actual runtime input and follow the value through function arguments and return values, object or array lookups, API response data, initialization, and asynchronous loading. These are possibilities to investigate, not universal causes.
  4. Decide what absence means in this code. Establish whether missing data is allowed by the contract or whether it signals a bug. That determines whether to handle an absent value, provide a valid fallback, or report a violated assumption.
  5. Reproduce and verify both paths. Test with the input or state that caused the error, then check the behavior when the value is present and when it is absent. Ensure the fix handles the intended case without disguising bad data.

Choose a fix that matches the data contract

These approaches are alternatives, not interchangeable ways to silence an exception. Ask whether absence is expected, whether undefined should propagate, whether a domain-safe default exists, or whether the program should fail early with a useful error.

Situation Approach Behavior
Missing data is expected and the caller can handle it Optional chaining Returns undefined instead of throwing at a guarded boundary
Absence has a meaningful, safe substitute Optional chaining with ?? Uses the fallback only when the result is null or undefined
Data is required for correct behavior Explicit validation or a guard Reports the broken assumption or follows a deliberate recovery path

Use optional chaining for genuinely optional data

const name = user?.profile?.name;

At each ?., if the value on its left is null or undefined, the continuous chain short-circuits to undefined. Add the operator at each boundary that may be absent. An unguarded access earlier in the expression can still throw, and grouping can end the chain: (user?.profile).name can throw if profile is missing. Optional chaining on a potentially absent method can also produce undefined; it does not make a present non-function callable. See MDN’s optional chaining reference.

Use a fallback only when it is correct for the domain

const name = user?.name ?? 'Guest';

The nullish coalescing operator ?? supplies 'Guest' only when the expression on its left is null or undefined. Unlike ||, it preserves values such as an empty string, 0, and false. Choose a fallback that makes sense for the application; a placeholder can make lost required data look like successful output.

Validate required data and fail clearly

When a value is required, check it where the program can provide a useful error or recovery path:

if (user == null) {
  throw new Error('Expected user data before rendering the profile');
}

render(user.name);

This check handles both null and undefined. Adapt the condition and error handling to the application, and fix the upstream source if it is sending missing or malformed data.

Check common upstream possibilities

The exception identifies the immediate failed access; it does not prove a particular root cause. Use the failing line and runtime data to check whether:

  • an object or array lookup found no matching item;
  • an object is missing a field the code expects;
  • a function returned without a value;
  • data had not loaded when the code ran;
  • an API response differs from the assumed shape; or
  • a callback or API value was not supplied.

These are hypotheses to test against the specific execution, not evidence that every occurrence has the same cause. If the runtime input is malformed or incomplete, repair or validate it at the appropriate boundary rather than adding optional chaining everywhere.

Check support for optional chaining in your target runtime

MDN marks optional chaining as widely available across browsers since July 2020. A project with older runtimes or build targets may still need a compatibility check, particularly if its code is not transpiled. See MDN’s browser compatibility information.
