If a file still appears in Git after you add it to .gitignore, first check whether Git already tracks it. Ignore rules affect intentionally untracked files; they do not remove files already in the index. Use git ls-files -- path/to/file to check, then follow the matching fix below.

Check whether Git already tracks the file

From the repository, run:

git ls-files -- path/to/file

If Git prints the path, it is tracked. The ignore rule will not stop Git from tracking it. To untrack it while keeping the local working copy, run:

git rm --cached -- path/to/file

Make sure the intended rule is in a suitable .gitignore, then review the staged change before committing. This removes the path from Git’s index; it does not delete the working copy.

Git’s gitignore manual documents both the tracked-file behavior and the use of git rm --cached to stop tracking a file.

Find which ignore rule applies

If the path is not tracked, ask Git to identify the matching rule:

git check-ignore -v -- path/to/file

The verbose output shows the rule’s source file, line number, pattern, and the path that matched. Ignore rules may come from a repository’s .gitignore files, repository-specific excludes, or the configured global excludes file. A more local .gitignore or a later matching pattern can change which rule wins.

If the path is already tracked but you want to test whether a rule would match it, bypass the index for this check:

git check-ignore -v --no-index -- path/to/file

The git check-ignore manual explains the verbose output and why tracked paths are normally omitted from the check.

Check the pattern’s location and syntax

Patterns are interpreted relative to the directory containing the .gitignore file. Check that the file is in the intended directory and that the pattern describes the path from that location.

  • A pattern without a slash can match names at any level below its .gitignore.
  • A slash anchors a pattern to the relevant directory level.
  • A pattern beginning with ! negates an earlier match, but it cannot re-include a file if its parent directory is excluded. The parent must first be made traversable by the ignore rules.
  • Check for later matching patterns and more local .gitignore files that may affect the result.

Git’s ignore-pattern documentation describes these rules and the precedence of the different ignore sources.

Confirm ignored files in status output

Ordinary git status output omits ignored paths, so a file’s absence there does not by itself prove the rule is wrong. To display ignored entries, run:

git status --ignored

Git marks ignored entries with !!. The git status manual documents the --ignored option and this output.

Quick troubleshooting sequence

  1. Run git ls-files -- path/to/file to determine whether the path is tracked.
  2. If it is tracked, run git rm --cached -- path/to/file, confirm the desired ignore rule, and inspect the staged change before committing.
  3. If it is untracked, run git check-ignore -v -- path/to/file and inspect the reported rule and source.
  4. If needed, test a tracked path’s ignore match with git check-ignore -v --no-index -- path/to/file.
  5. Review the pattern’s location, slash and wildcard use, negations, and any later or more local matching rules.
  6. Run git status --ignored to see ignored paths in status output.
