If git pull fails on a phone hotspot, first determine whether Git cannot reach the remote or whether it fetched successfully but cannot integrate the changes. Those are different problems: git pull fetches remote changes and then merges or rebases them, depending on configuration and command-line options. Git’s git-pull manual describes the two stages.

Check whether the hotspot connection itself works

  1. Connect the computer to the phone’s hotspot and open a few ordinary websites. If they do not load, resolve the hotspot or internet connection before changing Git settings.
  2. In the repository, run git remote -v. Note whether the remote URL begins with git@ or ssh:// (SSH), or https:// (HTTPS).
  3. Run git pull again and read the exact error. A timeout, DNS error, TLS error, authentication rejection, and merge conflict point to different causes.

The error and setup matter: the remote host, URL, credentials, phone and operating system, carrier, and any VPN or proxy can all affect the result. A failure on a hotspot alone does not establish that the carrier is blocking a particular port.

If Git cannot connect or fetch

SSH times out or is refused

If the remote uses SSH, try the HTTPS URL for the same repository. Git supports both SSH and HTTP(S) remotes, and GitHub recommends trying the other transport when connectivity is problematic. You may need to configure credentials for the alternate method; changing transport does not grant repository access.

For GitHub only, SSH can also be configured to connect over port 443 through ssh.github.com. Follow GitHub’s SSH-over-the-HTTPS-port instructions. This is a GitHub-specific option, not a general fix for other Git hosts.

HTTPS fails or behaves differently

Confirm that websites still load, then check whether a VPN or network proxy is active or required. Inspect Git’s configured proxy settings with:

git config --show-origin --get-regexp 'http..*proxy|remote..*proxy'

  • Two Data Packs Included: Each SIMO device comes bundled with 1GB of Free Data every month, forever (12GB Yearly) along with a one-time 30GB pack of Global Data (30GBs expires in 30 days)

Also check proxy-related environment variables in your operating system or shell. Git’s HTTP configuration documentation says a proxy must be completely transparent: it must not modify, transform, or buffer Git requests or responses. See Git’s HTTP configuration documentation and Git Credential Manager’s network and HTTP configuration guide.

If your organization requires a proxy, use its supported configuration rather than bypassing it. Do not turn off TLS certificate verification to make a connection error disappear; that weakens protection and does not identify the underlying cause.

GitHub remains unreachable

For a GitHub remote, use GitHub’s connectivity troubleshooting guide and its GitHub Debug diagnostic. GitHub says it does not throttle bandwidth per user; slow or intermittent performance may instead reflect congestion or changing signal conditions.

If the error is authentication or access

A message about rejected credentials or insufficient permission is not the same as a connection timeout. Confirm that the account used by Git has access to the repository and that its credential flow works for the selected transport. Switching between SSH and HTTPS can require a different credential setup. The available documentation does not establish a hotspot-specific authentication fix.

If fetching succeeds but integration fails

When Git has contacted the remote and downloaded references, but then reports divergent branches or conflicts, the hotspot connection has done its job. The remaining issue is how local and remote changes should be reconciled. git pull uses merge or rebase according to configuration and flags; resolve the reported integration state using the appropriate merge or rebase guidance rather than changing hotspot settings. See the Git git-pull manual.

Choose the next check from the symptom

What you see What to check Next action
SSH timeout or connection refused Whether the remote is an SSH URL and whether SSH works on another network Try HTTPS; for GitHub, consider its documented SSH-over-port-443 setup.
HTTPS connection error Internet access, proxy settings, and VPN routing Check Git proxy configuration and any required proxy; ensure the proxy does not alter Git traffic.
Authentication or permission error Repository access and credentials for the chosen transport Diagnose account access and credentials separately from hotspot reachability.
Fetch completes, then divergence or conflict appears Whether Git contacted the remote and downloaded references Address the merge or rebase state; hotspot changes are unlikely to help.
Slow or intermittent connection Whether performance changes with time or signal conditions Use the host’s diagnostics and consider congestion; GitHub says it does not throttle bandwidth per user.
