To start a Samsung Galaxy in Safe Mode, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off until Safe mode appears, then tap Safe mode. The device will restart with most third-party apps unavailable. To leave Safe Mode, restart the device normally. If the power-menu option is unavailable, try the startup-button method below; steps can vary by model, software version, and carrier.
Choose a way to start Safe Mode
Use the power-menu method if the Galaxy is on and responsive. Use the startup-button method if you need to enter Safe Mode during startup. Samsung’s UK instructions describe both approaches, while its Canada guidance shows a Quick Settings route to the power menu for devices sold in Canada. Check local, model-specific Samsung support if the controls differ.
Method 1: Use the power menu
- Open the power menu. Depending on your device, press and hold the Power or Side key, or open Quick Settings and tap the power icon. Samsung Canada’s instructions for devices sold in Canada open Quick Settings with a two-finger swipe, then tap the power icon.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode and allow the device to restart.
Samsung notes that settings and availability can differ by model, software version, and carrier. The Quick Settings route is not universal. Samsung Canada’s Safe Mode instructions show that route for its supported devices.

- Turn the device off.
- Turn it on again.
- When the Samsung logo appears by itself, press and hold Volume Down through startup.
- Check the screen for the Safe mode label.
Samsung UK describes this startup sequence. Devices without a separate Power key may use the button combination normally used to switch the device off. Because button behavior can vary, if this method does not work, consult Samsung support for your exact model rather than assuming the same sequence applies to every Galaxy. Samsung UK’s Safe Mode instructions provide the button guidance.

Use Safe Mode to check whether an app may be causing a problem
Safe Mode is a diagnostic startup state, not a separate app. Samsung describes it as a basic operating state in which most third-party applications are unavailable. Use the device long enough to see whether the problem you were investigating still happens.
- If the problem stops: A third-party app is a plausible cause, though Safe Mode does not identify the app or prove it is responsible. Uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking the device after each removal.
- If the problem continues: Samsung says it is unlikely to be related to an app. Safe Mode is a clue for narrowing the cause, not a diagnosis of the underlying fault.
For general Android guidance on checking apps this way, see Google’s instructions for finding problem apps by rebooting to Safe Mode.

Return to normal operation
Press and hold the Power key and tap Restart, or use the device’s normal restart control. Samsung says a normal restart returns the Galaxy to regular operation. See Samsung UK’s Safe Mode instructions or Samsung Canada’s guide for the restart step.
If the Galaxy keeps starting in Safe Mode
Samsung Korea notes that pressing Volume Down inadvertently while the device starts can trigger Safe Mode. A protective cover may press the button.
