If Android detects your SD card but your file manager cannot open it, grant access through the file manager’s prompt or Android’s system file picker. Choose an eligible folder on the card and confirm. If Android itself does not show the card under Storage, app permissions are not the problem; check card detection first.

First check whether Android detects the SD card

Open your device’s Settings and look under Storage for the SD card. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and device manufacturer, but the key question is whether Android lists the card at all.

  • If the card appears: continue to the file manager’s access prompt below.
  • If it does not appear: a permission grant cannot make Android detect it. Check that the card is seated correctly and consult your device maker’s guidance for compatibility or card-condition issues.

Android Help describes using the notification shown when a card is detected for initial setup, and the Storage screen for card settings. Labels can differ across devices. Google Android Help: Get started with an SD card.

Give the file manager access to the card

  1. Open the file manager and choose its option to browse storage, open an SD card, or add a storage location. The wording depends on the app.
  2. When Android opens a system file picker, navigate to the SD card and select an eligible folder. If access to the card’s root is unavailable, choose an allowed subfolder instead.
  3. Tap the picker’s confirmation button to grant access. Its label varies by Android release and manufacturer.
  4. Return to the file manager and open the selected folder. The grant applies to that folder and its descendants, not to unrelated locations on the card.

This is a user-approved directory grant through Android’s Storage Access Framework (SAF), not a universal switch that gives the app unrestricted access to every file. Android Developers: Access documents and other files from shared storage.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What to do if Android blocks the card root

On Android 11 and later, SAF restricts some directory selections. For example, an app cannot request the root of an SD-card volume that the device manufacturer considers reliable. Try selecting an allowed folder on the card instead; do not expect the system picker to provide a full-card grant. Android also documents selection limits for the protected Android/data and Android/obb folders.

These restrictions are part of Android’s storage model, not necessarily a fault with the card or file manager. Android Developers: Android 11 storage updates.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Check the app permission in Settings if it asks you to

If the file manager directs you to Settings for a Files and media permission, inspect that app’s permission page. On Android 11, one documented route is Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Files and media. The path and labels may differ on newer releases or manufacturer-customized Android versions.

A Files and media permission and an SAF directory grant are distinct mechanisms. Granting the former does not remove SAF’s directory-selection limits. Android 11 documentation also states that WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE does not provide additional storage access to apps targeting Android 11 or later. Android Developers: Android 11 storage updates.

Portable and internal SD-card storage are different

Android may set up a card as portable storage or as internal (adoptable) storage. The mode affects how the card can be used and moved between devices.

Setup mode Portability Use described by Android Help Changing the format
Portable Can be transferred between devices. Can store files. Formatting erases the card’s data.
Internal (adoptable) Cannot be transferred between devices for use as-is. Can store files and host apps. Formatting erases the card’s data.

These distinctions come from Google Android Help: Get started with an SD card. Do not reformat a card just because one file manager cannot browse it: formatting permanently deletes data. Back up the card before any intentional format or reconfiguration.

Why “all files” access is not the routine fix

Android’s storage permissions depend on the app’s purpose and Android version. For Android 10 and later, apps targeting API 29 or above use scoped storage by default. Android’s broad All files access permission is intended for particular use cases that cannot be handled efficiently through narrower storage methods; it is not a standard remedy for a file manager that has not been granted access to a selected folder. Android Developers: Android 11 storage updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the picker or app’s permission screen does not offer the access you need, do not assume the app can bypass Android’s limits. The available options depend on the Android version, the app, and the device.

If access still does not work

  • Confirm again that Android lists the SD card under Storage.
  • Reopen the file manager’s browse or storage option and complete the system picker grant for an eligible folder.
  • If the card root is blocked, try a permitted subfolder rather than repeatedly requesting the root.
  • Check the file manager’s permission page if the app specifically sends you there.
  • For device-specific instructions, identify the phone or tablet model, Android version, card setup mode, and file-manager app; exact menus and available access vary.
