Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
A Factorio server rejects a player when the client and server do not match exactly. The reliable fix is to make four things identical: the Factorio release, every mod file and version, each mod’s enabled or disabled state, and the save’s startup settings. In the multiplayer connection dialog, choose Sync mods with server; for a local save, use Sync mods with save and Ctrl-click it when you need the versions recorded by that save rather than the latest releases.
If synchronization does not work, compare the server and client lists as a controlled troubleshooting exercise. Check the game build, filenames, versions, dependencies, enabled state, startup settings and any manually edited files, then roll back recently added or updated mods and restart the server to isolate the offender.
What a Factorio mod mismatch error means
Factorio performs a compatibility check when a player joins multiplayer. It calculates checksums for the installed game and mods, then compares the client with the server. A mismatch can therefore occur even when a mod appears to have the same name: changing its contents, renaming its file, or using a different build produces a different checksum.
The official Factorio multiplayer documentation states that all game instances must use “exactly the same game-versions and mods.” In practical terms, the following four dimensions must agree:

- Factorio release: The game version shown by the client must match the version used by the dedicated-server binary.
- Mod files and versions: Every enabled mod must be the same release, with identical file contents.
- Enabled state and dependencies: A mod enabled on one side but disabled on the other, or a missing dependency, changes the effective mod set.
- Startup settings: Settings selected for the save must match the settings used by the joining client.
A save can retain the mod state that was active when it was created. That means the newest release currently installed on a computer is not necessarily the release that save expects.
Use Factorio’s built-in synchronization first
Automatic synchronization is the quickest way to reconstruct the server’s exact mod set. It downloads the versions reported by the server and enables them locally, avoiding a manual filename-by-filename search.
Joining a multiplayer server
- Open the multiplayer browser or the server connection dialog.
- Select the server you want to join.
- When Factorio offers Sync mods with server, accept it.
- Wait for the download and for Factorio to enable the required mods.
- Restart Factorio if it asks you to restart.
- Connect again after the restart.
The synchronization process is specific to the server’s current state. If an administrator changes the server’s mods later, every player must repeat the same synchronization so all installations are rebuilt from that state.
Synchronizing a local save
- From the main menu, choose Load game.
- Select the save that is reporting the mismatch.
- Choose Sync mods with save.
- For the normal action, Factorio uses the latest available versions of the save’s mods.
- To use the exact versions recorded by the save, hold Ctrl while clicking Sync mods with save.
- Restart the game if prompted, then load the save again.
Ctrl-clicking is important for older saves. Selecting the ordinary control can replace a recorded older release with a newer one, which may still be incompatible with the save or with another player’s installation.
Check the four matching dimensions before changing anything
1. Confirm the Factorio build
Read the version displayed by the client and compare it with the dedicated-server binary’s version. Do this before downloading mods: a game-build mismatch can prevent a join even when every mod is correct. Keep the comparison specific to the same release line; do not assume that two installations are equivalent because both are labelled “stable” or because their mod lists look alike.

2. Compare the complete mod list
Record the server’s full list, including each filename and version, then compare it with the client’s list. Do not compare only the names shown in a launcher. Look for an extra file on one side, a missing dependency, a disabled mod that is enabled elsewhere, or two files whose names look similar but contain different versions.

An edited archive, a renamed zip, or a locally patched file will not have the same checksum as the unmodified server file. Replacing it with the exact server release is safer than trying to repair the archive by hand.
3. Verify enabled and disabled states
The same set of files can still produce a mismatch if one installation enables a mod and the other leaves it disabled. Check optional dependencies as well as the primary mods. The effective set is what Factorio checks during the join, not merely what happens to be present in a directory.
4. Check startup settings
Startup settings can be part of the state expected by the save and server. Compare the values selected in the save and on the client, especially after importing a configuration or changing a mod’s startup option. A version match alone does not repair a settings mismatch.
When synchronization still fails
Do not change several variables at once. Treat the error as a controlled comparison: preserve the server’s list, compare one difference, make one change, and test again. This keeps the investigation reversible and reveals which item caused the failure.

Build a server-versus-client inventory
- Write down the Factorio version reported by the server.
- Export or record every server mod filename and version.
- Record whether each item is enabled, its dependencies, and relevant startup settings.
- Make the same inventory on the client.
- Mark differences before deleting or updating anything.
Recent changes are the best starting point: a mod added since the last successful session, an automatic update, a manually replaced archive, or a setting changed while testing another problem.
Remove newly added mods
The official desynchronization guidance recommends removing newly added mods as an isolation step. Temporarily take out the newest addition from the server configuration and have clients synchronize again. If the mismatch disappears, restore the mod only after confirming that every installation has the same release and settings.
Roll back recently updated mods
If the problem began after an update, roll that mod back to the version used by the save or by the last known-good server state. A save may depend on an older release even when a newer release is available. Test the rollback with a server restart, then synchronize each client.
Restart after each controlled change
Restarting the server is part of the official isolation loop. It ensures the server loads the changed mod state rather than retaining an in-memory configuration. Have one client reconnect after each restart; once the offending change is identified, apply the confirmed version to every player.
Server saves and the “latest version” trap
Factorio’s save file can encode the mod state that was active when the save was created. The word “latest” therefore has two different meanings:

- Latest available release: The newest version currently offered by the mod system.
- Version recorded by the save: The release that the save used when it was written.
For a current multiplayer server that has deliberately been upgraded, syncing with the server obtains the server’s chosen state. For an older local save, Ctrl-click Sync mods with save to select the versions recorded in that save. This avoids silently moving the save to a newer mod release during recovery.
Command-line dedicated servers
A server started from a shell must be associated with the intended save. The official command-line reference documents two relevant options:

--start-serverlaunches a multiplayer server with the save you specify.--sync-modssynchronizes mods with a save.
Use the options with the actual save path and the same Factorio installation that will host the session. A typical command pattern is:
factorio --sync-mods <save-file>
factorio --start-server <save-file>Replace <save-file> with the real path to the save; do not treat the angle-bracket text as a literal filename. After synchronization, start the server from that same save and have clients use Sync mods with server. If the command-line process points to a different save than the one you inspected, the mod list you are comparing is not the list the server is actually using.
Choose the right fix for the situation

The best fix is the one that restores exact version and checksum equality while retaining the save’s intended state. A workaround that merely makes the join button available but changes the save’s mod set can create a later failure.

Common causes and targeted recovery
Client has an extra mod
Disable or remove the extra client mod, then reconnect. Do not assume an unused file is harmless if it is enabled or changes the dependency graph.

Server has a mod the client cannot download
Record the server’s exact filename and version. Install that release through the normal mod mechanism or copy the unmodified server file, then run synchronization again. If the file was customized locally, obtain the identical customized copy from the server administrator rather than a same-named public release.
One side updated automatically
Roll back the updated side or update every participant to the server’s confirmed version. For a save with a historical dependency, use Ctrl-click synchronization so the recorded release is selected.
A mod was renamed or edited
Restore the original filename and unmodified contents, or replace it with the exact archive used by the server. Checksums detect content changes even when the visible name is unchanged.
Startup settings differ
Open the mod settings for the save and compare startup values one by one. Apply the server’s values to the client, save the configuration, restart if requested, and test again.

Prevent future mismatch errors
- Keep a written record of the Factorio build, mod filenames, versions and enabled state whenever the server is changed.
- Make one mod change at a time, restart the server, and verify a client can join before making another change.
- Tell every player to synchronize after a server update instead of manually downloading whatever version happens to be newest.
- Keep backups of the save and the last known-good mod set before updating.
- For long-running saves, treat the save-recorded versions as the baseline and schedule upgrades deliberately.
- When using a command-line server, verify the save path in the launch command so troubleshooting targets the active save.
Final checklist
- Compare the client and server Factorio versions.
- Run Sync mods with server when joining multiplayer.
- For a local save, use Sync mods with save; Ctrl-click for the versions recorded by the save.
- Restart Factorio or the server whenever prompted or after changing the server state.
- Compare every mod filename, version, dependency, enabled state and startup setting.
- Remove newly added mods and roll back recently updated ones to isolate the offender.
- Confirm a command-line server uses the intended save with
--sync-modsand--start-server. - Synchronize every player again after the server’s final state is confirmed.
