Windows does not limit File Explorer network discovery to Wi-Fi. An Ethernet-connected PC can be discoverable too, but its network profile, sharing settings, discovery services, firewall policy, or the network itself may prevent it from appearing. Check those layers separately—and test a known share directly before concluding that it is unreachable.
First separate network access from File Explorer visibility
There are two different questions: can the computers communicate, and does Windows list a computer under File Explorer’s Network view? A PC missing from that list may still allow access to a known shared folder. Conversely, seeing a computer does not guarantee that a particular share is available or that your account has permission to open it.
- To browse for computers: check the active connection’s network profile, Network discovery, the discovery-related services, and firewall or policy settings.
- To open a known folder: try its network path and check the target computer, share permissions, and connectivity.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance includes network-profile instructions for both Wi-Fi and Ethernet; it does not document File Explorer discovery as Wi-Fi-only. That does not identify the cause on any particular network: topology, guest-network isolation, VLANs, VPNs, managed policies, and the target device’s protocols can all affect the result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set the active connection to the right network profile
In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet, select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and inspect Network profile type. Microsoft’s instructions provide separate paths for Wi-Fi and Ethernet. On a trusted home or work network, choose Private if you want the PC to be discoverable and potentially share files. Use Public when you do not trust the network’s devices and users.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Microsoft describes a Public profile as hiding the PC from other devices and disallowing file and printer sharing from that PC. A Private profile makes it discoverable and allows file and printer sharing. Private is not a general “better” setting: select it only when you trust the network and the devices and people on it. See Microsoft’s Essential Network Settings and Tasks in Windows.
Enable discovery and sharing only as needed
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. Under the profile in use, turn on Network discovery if you want to find other devices or have this PC appear in network browsing. Turn on File and printer sharing when this PC is meant to provide shared folders or printers. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for shared folders and mapped drives covers these settings.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Sharing settings have security consequences because they make network services available to other devices. Avoid enabling sharing on a network you do not trust, and share only the folders and printers you intend to make available.
If the PC is still missing, check discovery services

Check whether they are available and running, and follow Microsoft’s startup guidance for your Windows release and the computer’s policy. Service behavior and configuration can vary by Windows version or organization-managed settings, so do not assume that one startup type is correct for every PC. The relevant steps are in Microsoft’s shared-folder troubleshooting article.
Try a direct path to a known shared folder
If you know the server name and share name, try opening the UNC path in File Explorer’s address bar: \ServerNameShareName. You can also connect from Command Prompt using Microsoft’s documented form:

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
net use <DeviceName>: \<ServerName><ShareName>
Replace the angle-bracketed terms with the appropriate drive letter, server name, and share name. The command and troubleshooting steps are documented in Microsoft’s guide to shared folders and mapped network drives.
If direct access works while the Network list remains empty, the share is reachable and the remaining issue is browsing or discovery—not necessarily file-sharing transport or permissions. If it fails, check that the target is online, the share name is correct, and your account has access. A failed direct connection can also reflect firewall rules or network isolation; a missing browse-list entry alone cannot distinguish among these causes.

Check firewall rules without turning the firewall off
Keep Windows Firewall enabled. Microsoft says Windows Firewall opens the appropriate sharing ports when network discovery or sharing is enabled. If a third-party firewall is installed, or an organization manages firewall policy, its rules may need to permit the corresponding traffic. Review those rules with the firewall administrator or product guidance rather than disabling the firewall wholesale. Microsoft warns that turning it off can leave a device vulnerable; see its Windows Defender Firewall guidance and network sharing troubleshooting steps.
Reserve legacy-protocol troubleshooting for older devices
Do not enable SMB 1.0 as a generic fix for a modern Windows PC that is absent from File Explorer. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page lists enabling the SMB 1.0 client among possible steps, but that is not evidence that SMB 1.0 is needed for modern Windows discovery or is an appropriate default. Consider legacy protocols only when the specific target is old or its documented protocol support requires them.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 community guidance notes that mDNS may be used for discovery and that older Windows or legacy non-Windows devices may rely on UPnP, NetBIOS, or LLMNR. The right protocol depends on the endpoint and configuration; changing router, adapter, cable, or protocol settings without evidence of a problem at that layer can add risk without solving the visibility issue. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 network discovery discussion.

Use the result to narrow the cause
- Private profile and discovery enabled, but no devices appear: check the four services, firewall policy, and whether the network allows devices to communicate with one another.
- Other devices appear, but one target does not: check that target’s profile, discovery and sharing settings, availability, and protocol support.
- The target appears, but a share will not open: verify the share path and permissions, then investigate connectivity and firewall or SMB issues separately.
- A direct UNC connection works, but Network stays empty: focus on browse-list discovery rather than assuming that Ethernet itself cannot carry file sharing.
Without details such as the Windows build, network layout, VPN state, firewall policy, and target-device type, no single cause or universal fix can be established.
