DISM error 0x800f0915 is associated with DISM’s inability to locate repair content, but the code alone does not reveal whether the problem is Windows Update, a specified repair source, source compatibility, or a broader servicing issue. Start with the standard DISM repair command, check its final status, and use a suitable alternate Windows source if it cannot obtain the files.
What DISM error 0x800f0915 means
DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) repairs the Windows image by finding and replacing missing or corrupted files. By default, it can obtain replacement files through Windows Update. If it cannot find the needed content, RestoreHealth may fail; however, 0x800f0915 by itself does not identify the underlying cause.
Possible factors include Windows Update being unavailable, an unusable or incompatible repair source, or another servicing problem. Treat the error as a signal to check how DISM is sourcing files and whether Windows has pending update work—not as proof of one specific fault.

Run DISM first, then System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand let it finish. - Check the final status message. Microsoft Learn identifies “The restore operation completed successfully” as the success result; reaching 100% progress alone is not enough to confirm success. If the operation does not complete successfully, review the logs described below.
- After DISM succeeds, run
sfc /scannowin the elevated Command Prompt and keep the window open until verification finishes.

Choose a repair source if Windows Update cannot provide the files
DISM normally uses Windows Update. If that route is unavailable or cannot supply the required content, Microsoft documents using a suitable local Windows installation, network folder, or removable Windows media as an alternate source. The source must contain appropriate repair files; a USB drive is only a carrier and does not fix Windows on its own.

If Windows has updates awaiting completion—or an update was installed without the required restart—restart the PC, install applicable updates, and try DISM again. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also covers checking the servicing stack and confirming that a manually installed package applies to the device.

Read the logs if DISM still fails
Microsoft Learn recommends analyzing the Component-Based Servicing log when repair does not complete successfully. Open %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and inspect entries around the time of the failed attempt for the relevant issue. A Microsoft Community Hub reply also recommends checking %windir%LogsDISMdism.log; that additional log suggestion is community guidance, not the cited Microsoft Learn recommendation.

Is the 2026 cumulative update a confirmed fix?
No broad fix for 0x800f0915 is established by the available official documentation. In a Microsoft Community Hub discussion, a contributor claimed on July 30, 2026 that a June 2026 cumulative update fixed a RestoreHealth issue and mentioned build 26200.8655. That is a forum claim, not an official release note confirming the fix or its scope; another reply in the same thread reported that the error persisted for that user.
