If your AirPods or Bluetooth headphones sound muffled only after you join a Discord call, the likely cause is Bluetooth switching into a mode that supports the headset microphone—not necessarily a broken headset or the wrong Discord output setting. If you hear nothing or your microphone is missing, start instead with Discord’s device selectors, mute and deafen controls, and microphone permissions.
Identify what is going wrong
Pin down when the problem starts before changing settings. A sudden quality drop when a call begins points to Bluetooth call behavior; missing sound or input usually calls for a device, permission, or mute check.
- Sound gets muffled or quieter only in a call: the headphones may have switched to a Bluetooth mode that supports their microphone.
- You hear nothing: check Discord’s output device, system output selection, and mute or deafen state.
- Others cannot hear you: check the input device, microphone permission, and whether the mic is muted.
- Audio cuts out or stutters: confirm the devices and permissions first, then move to updates and Discord’s advanced troubleshooting.

Check Discord’s input and output devices first
- In Discord desktop or browser, open User Settings → Voice & Video. Labels and locations can vary by client version.
- Under input, choose the microphone you intend to use. Under output, select your AirPods or Bluetooth headphones.
- Check input and output volume levels. Use Discord’s microphone test if it is available in your client.
- Confirm Discord has microphone permission in your operating system’s privacy settings.
- Check that you are not muted or deafened, and check channel or server mute permissions if the controls appear correct.
Discord recommends these checks before more advanced changes. If a microphone is not detected, check the headset’s hardware mute and restart Discord. For a wired device, trying another connection or port can help isolate a connection issue; it does not apply to Bluetooth headphones. Discord’s microphone troubleshooting also lists audio subsystem and packet-priority settings, but those are later steps—not a default fix for every AirPods problem.

Why AirPods sound worse when you join a Discord call
Bluetooth headphones can use a higher-quality mode for listening or a different mode that allows speaking through the headset microphone while listening. When a call activates the headphone microphone, the connection may switch to the speaking-and-listening mode, reducing sound quality and volume. Discord describes this as a switch to a Bluetooth “headset” profile that supports microphone use and offers lower-quality audio than the listening profile.
Apple describes the same behavior on Mac: “This happens because Bluetooth has two modes:” one for higher-quality listening and another for speaking and listening. A quality change that starts with the call therefore does not, by itself, show that your AirPods are defective or that Discord selected the wrong output. On Mac, stop other apps from using the headphone microphone
Apple’s recovery steps apply to Mac, not Windows. If sound quality remains reduced, an app may still be using the Bluetooth headphone microphone.

- Close apps that are using the headphones’ microphone.
- Make sure the Sound settings pane is not left open.
- In Mac sound settings, select the Mac’s internal speakers, then select the Bluetooth headphones again.
Closing Discord or switching to another microphone can help only if the Bluetooth headset microphone is no longer in use. The steps may not restore listening-mode quality in every Mac configuration.

Try a separate microphone for calls
If you want to keep Bluetooth headphones for game or music playback, try selecting a separate microphone as Discord’s input and keeping the headphones selected as output. Discord provides separate input and output selectors, but whether this avoids a Bluetooth profile switch depends on the computer, operating system, headset, and app behavior. Treat it as a setup to test, not a guaranteed fix.
AirPods can be used as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device, according to Apple’s AirPods setup guidance. Compatibility does not guarantee that every model and computer will behave the same way during a Discord call.

If the basic checks do not fix it
Once you know whether the issue is input, output, or call-triggered quality loss, use Discord’s broader troubleshooting steps in order:
- Update Discord and your operating system, then restart the computer.
- On Windows, review audio drivers if the microphone or headphones are still not detected.
- Reset Voice & Video settings if a configuration change may have caused the problem.
- For persistent quality or connection problems, review Discord’s advanced options, such as Krisp noise suppression. Windows users can also review optional microphone enhancements and the audio subsystem settings.
- If the issue persists, contact Discord support with your operating system and client details, screenshots of Voice & Video settings, the available device list, and a debug log. See Discord’s troubleshooting guide for its current support guidance.
Windows and LE Audio: what is not established here
The available official guidance does not establish one current Windows procedure that universally disables the Bluetooth microphone profile for AirPods or other headphones. Windows menus and device behavior can vary, so do not apply Mac’s Sound-settings steps as if they were Windows instructions.

Discord’s Bluetooth article discusses LE Audio compatibility in relation to supported devices, but its rollout wording is dated and does not establish current Discord support across desktop clients. Do not assume LE Audio will prevent call-related quality changes; compatibility depends on the headset and the computer or phone.
