Run csperf doctor before treating a failed benchmark as a measurement problem. The CompilerSutra tutorial describes it as an initial check for whether the compiler and supporting toolchain are available and configured; it is a triage step, not proof that a benchmark is valid. Because the command’s current behavior is not independently confirmed by primary csperf documentation, check the help for the version installed on your machine.

Why check the toolchain before benchmarking?

A run can fail before meaningful measurement begins if the compiler executable cannot be reached, a required LLVM/Clang library or Python package is unavailable, or csperf’s environment configuration is wrong. The CompilerSutra tutorial says csperf doctor checks these areas. Those descriptions are claims from the tutorial, not independently verified details of every csperf release.

Checking setup first helps separate an environment problem from a benchmark or measurement problem. A clean doctor report only reflects the checks that command performs; it does not establish that the benchmark design is sound, rule out run-to-run noise, or show that results generalize to another machine.

Run the check and read its report

  1. Activate the virtual environment you intend to use for the benchmark.

  2. Run the command in the same environment and context where you plan to benchmark:

    csperf doctor
  3. Look for the report. The tutorial says the command writes csperf/doctor.txt, with sections for Compiler, LLVM, csperf, and Environment. Confirm the actual output and file location for your installed version rather than assuming every release uses the same format.

  4. Read the status beside each check. The tutorial describes [ok] as a passing check, [missing] as an unavailable component, and [error] as a reported problem. Use the surrounding diagnostic text to identify what to investigate.

Choose the next check from the reported problem

The tutorial also suggests updating csperf when a problem persists. First check the installed command’s help and version-specific documentation so any update or repair matches your setup. Do not assume that an option shown in a tutorial, such as csperf doctor --install, exists in your installed release.

When the report is clean but the run still fails

Use the failure message and the installed version’s help to continue diagnosing the specific command. The related csperf tutorial reports that doctor.txt is written and that a successful run exits with code 0; treat those as that article’s observations, not a guaranteed exit-code contract for all versions.

If the benchmark invokes a .NET CLI command, Microsoft documents dotnet --help and command-specific help as ways to inspect available commands and options. That documentation is about the .NET CLI, not csperf, so it cannot confirm csperf’s flags or behavior. Consult the documentation for the project version you actually installed when available.

What the example machine does—and does not—show

The CompilerSutra tutorial describes a successful example on Ubuntu 24.04 with an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X, reporting 16 logical CPUs and a maximum frequency of 5.58 GHz. This is one machine described in the article, not an independently run test, a compatibility promise, or evidence that the doctor command improves benchmark accuracy. It does not establish a failure rate or how much time the check saves.

For the command’s purpose and reported check categories, see the CompilerSutra csperf Doctor tutorial. For its separate report about the artifact and exit behavior, see the related csperf tutorial. Microsoft’s .NET CLI command reference covers help for .NET commands, not csperf.
