This message usually means Android sees the app you are trying to install as having the same application ID as one already on the device. If you are updating that app, install a compatible update; if you need a separate app or test build, it must use a different application ID. First check whether the error appears on an Android device or in Google Play Console, because those cases have different fixes.
Identify where the error appears
On an Android device, the message generally points to an identity conflict with an app installed on that device. Android identifies an installed app by its application ID, also commonly called its package name. The Android update guide says a device can have only one app with a given application ID installed at a time: Android app versioning.
If the message appears while creating or publishing an app in Google Play Console, it is instead a package-name registration or ownership issue. Follow the separate Play Console guidance below rather than trying to remove an app from your phone.

Fix the error on an Android device
If you are updating an app already installed
Install the update from the app’s official source. For Android to accept it as an update, the new package must retain the installed app’s application ID, use the same signing certificate or valid proof of key rotation, and have a version code at least as high as the installed version. A matching name alone does not guarantee that an APK can update the installed app.

If you are installing a different app or variant
Android treats two apps with the same application ID as the same app identity, so they cannot coexist on one device under that ID. A developer who intends to distribute a separate app, clone, or test variant must give it a distinct application ID. Avoid downloading an APK from an untrusted source to work around the conflict.
If you are considering uninstalling the existing app
Removing the installed app may clear the identity conflict, but uninstalling erases that app’s data stored on the device. Back up or sync anything important first, and uninstall only if you recognize the app and know how to restore its data. Uninstalling does not make an incompatible signing key or lower version code into a valid update.

Fix the error as an Android developer
Choose the installed identity with applicationId
In the app module’s Gradle build configuration, set the intended installed identity using applicationId. Android uses this value to identify the app on the device and in Google Play. For a side-by-side debug, test, clone, or white-label build, configure a distinct application ID for that build.
Keep applicationId distinct from namespace
namespace controls the package for generated classes such as R and BuildConfig; applicationId is the app’s final installed identity. Android permits different values, though keeping them aligned is a straightforward default. See Configure the app module.

Do not change a published app’s ID to repair an update
Changing the application ID makes the build a different app in Google Play, not an update to the existing listing. Existing users will not receive it as an update, and app data does not transfer between the old and new identities. To update a published app, keep its application ID and satisfy the signing and version-code requirements. See Android app versioning and Configure the app module.
If the conflict is in Google Play Console
Google’s Android developer-verification guide describes a Play Console Create app flow that registers new package names after the March 2026 launch. According to that guide, a package name used outside Play—or installed on a certified Android device before the Play app is created—can require proof of ownership of the private key used to sign the app. Follow the ownership process shown in the current console. Deleting an app from a phone does not prove control of its signing key.

What the message does—and does not—tell you
AOSP’s installer code rejects duplicate package names; its source comment says, “A package name must be unique; don’t allow duplicates.” See InstallPackageHelper.java. The exact installer that produced this wording may vary, so the message alone does not establish whether the issue is an update mismatch, a second app using the same identity, or a Play Console ownership conflict. Confirm the screen and the app you intended to install before taking action.
