When Battle.net will not sign in, hangs while updating, or repeatedly fails to download a game, start with the exact symptom and any displayed error code. A login failure, a launcher or Agent update failure, and a game-file transfer failure have different causes and different fixes. Work through the matching branch below before deleting files or reinstalling the app.
Start with the symptom, not a random fix
Battle.net problems usually fall into four separate categories. Identifying the category prevents you from treating an account problem as a damaged installation or a disk-write problem as an internet outage.

Fix Battle.net sign-in and account-access errors

Keep account recovery separate from launcher troubleshooting. Once you can authenticate in a browser, retry the desktop app. If browser access works but the desktop app does not, continue with the local-app and network branches rather than repeatedly resetting the password.
Resolve an app that is stuck updating or will not start
Restart the Battle.net Agent cleanly
The desktop app relies on a background Agent to install and patch games. A stalled Agent can leave the window on an update message such as “Stuck at Updating Battle.net Agent.” A restart is useful only if the old process has actually ended.
- Exit Battle.net from its window and notification-area menu.
- Open Task Manager and look for the Battle.net Agent process, commonly shown as
Agent.exe. - Wait until the Agent process disappears. If it remains, end the relevant Battle.net process in Task Manager.
- Reopen Battle.net and allow the Agent to initialize before starting a game download.

Do not launch several copies of the app while an old Agent is still running. Multiple competing processes can make a lock or permission problem look like a download failure.
Check software conflicts and security controls
Blizzard’s Agent and installer guidance includes closing conflicting applications and configuring security software to allow Blizzard applications. Temporarily disabling protection without understanding the risk is not a complete fix; the safer approach is to create the appropriate allow or exception entry in the security product you manage, then restore normal protection.

- Retry the update after making one change at a time so you know which change mattered.

Fix a failed game download or patch

- Install available driver and operating-system updates, then restart if required.
