“Command not found” usually means the active shell cannot locate a program’s executable—not necessarily that the program is missing. First check where it was installed and which shell or terminal you are using. If the executable is present but its directory is missing from PATH, add that directory to the right shell configuration and verify the fix before reinstalling anything.
What “command not found” means—and what to check first
When you enter a command, the shell searches locations listed in its PATH variable. If the executable or a command link is outside those locations, the shell may report that the command was not found even though the software is installed.
Start by identifying the exact command that fails, the terminal and shell where you ran it, the operating system, and how the program was installed. An installation made for one user account, shell, package manager, or operating system may not be available in another environment.
Check the command’s name and spelling, then look for the executable using the lookup command for your environment. If the result points to an unexpected location, or there are several results, inspect them before changing PATH or removing anything.

Find the executable and see which copy runs
Replace qoder in these examples with the command that fails. The lookup tools report what the current environment can find; a missing result does not, by itself, prove the program was never installed.

These examples follow the command-location checks in Qoder’s installation troubleshooting guide. On Windows, where returns matching locations; PowerShell’s Get-Command -All can expose multiple command matches. If more than one copy appears, note which path is selected before changing or deleting files: an older copy earlier in the search order can explain why the command runs the wrong version.

Add the executable’s directory to the active shell’s PATH
If you confirm the executable exists, compare its directory with the active shell’s PATH. Add the directory that actually contains the executable; do not copy a sample path without checking your installation. Preserve the existing PATH entries so other commands remain available.

These examples are from Slack’s Mac and Linux CLI installation guide. Substitute the confirmed executable directory for $HOME/.local/bin. Edit the configuration for the shell you actually use; changing a Bash file will not necessarily affect a Fish or Zsh session.
After saving the change, either open a new terminal session or load the edited file into the current shell with its appropriate source command. The updated PATH must reach the shell that will run the command.

Check the installation method if the command is still missing
Global npm installations
If you installed the CLI globally through npm, check the configured prefix with npm config get prefix. Then identify the appropriate global binary directory for that installation and make sure it is on the active shell’s PATH. Do not assume the npm prefix or binary directory is the same across systems or installations; Qoder’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the prefix rather than guessing.
Different users or environments
Confirm you are running the command as the same user and in the same operating system or environment where it was installed. A command installed in one account or shell may not be available in another. In particular, a Linux shell in WSL does not resolve every Windows command in exactly the same way as Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell.

For WSL, check Windows paths and interop
If a Windows executable such as notepad.exe fails from a WSL shell, inspect the WSL session’s PATH with echo $PATH. Look for Windows locations such as /mnt/c/Windows or /mnt/c/Windows/system32. Windows executable discovery in WSL depends on Windows paths being available and interop being enabled. Microsoft Learn puts it plainly: “If there are no Win32 paths in your $PATH, interop isn’t going to find the .exe.”
Microsoft’s WSL troubleshooting guide advises checking whether an assignment in /etc/profile overwrites the inherited PATH and whether /etc/wsl.conf disables appendWindowsPath. If you change WSL configuration, restart the distribution for the change to take effect. This is a WSL-specific repair, not a general Linux PATH fix.
Verify the fix—and distinguish other errors
- Open a fresh shell or load the updated configuration. Use the startup file and method appropriate to your active shell.
- Check command resolution again. Repeat the lookup command for your platform and confirm that the intended executable path appears.
- Run a harmless check. If the CLI supports it, try its version or help option—for example,
qoder --versionorqoder --help, as shown in Qoder’s troubleshooting guide.
If the shell now finds the executable but running it returns “permission denied,” the lookup problem is resolved; investigate the permission error separately. Likewise, an unsupported platform is not fixed by adding a path. Qoder documents permission failures and unsupported Windows ARM64 as distinct issues from “command not found.”
