If text suddenly changes to Chinese-looking characters on a Windows PC, first check whether the change is limited to one app or document, or appears across Windows. Then distinguish text that is being entered incorrectly from existing text that is merely being displayed differently. A keyboard-layout change affects typing, not Windows’ display language; missing fonts, language settings, or system-file problems are separate possibilities.
What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
Chinese-looking lettering does not by itself prove that Windows switched languages or that Chinese language support is faulty. The cause is not established for every case: an app may substitute a missing font, Windows language or display settings may be involved, or broader system-file trouble may warrant checking.
An August 25, 2026 ElevenForum post matching this symptom describes a Windows 11 Home 25H2 PC, build 26200.8737, where the user noticed intermittent changes while moving files and opening a new folder. The user reported temporary improvement after trying a system-locale suggestion and running sfc /scannow, followed by recurrence. That individual report does not verify a cause or establish a lasting fix. Read the forum discussion.
Start by narrowing down where it happens
- Check the scope: Look at text in more than one app or Windows surface. If only one document or program looks different, begin with its font and settings. If multiple Windows surfaces are affected, check Windows language settings and consider system health.
- Separate typing from display: If the wrong characters appear only as you type, check the active keyboard/input layout. If text that was already there changes appearance without typing, a keyboard layout is unlikely to explain the display change.
- Record what you see: Note the affected app or Windows surface, whether all text or only some characters change, and whether the issue returns after opening a new window or document. Take a screenshot if possible.
Microsoft explains that changing a keyboard layout changes the layout used for typing; it does not change Windows’ display language. Microsoft’s language and keyboard-layout guidance covers Windows 10 and 11.

If one document or app is affected, check its fonts
Look at the font specified in the document or app and check whether that font is installed. Microsoft notes that Office may substitute the closest available font when a document uses an unavailable East Asian font, which can make text look different. Windows also provides font management and supplemental language-font installation options in Windows 10 and 11. Use Windows settings or the app’s supported font-installation process, and avoid downloading fonts from unknown sources. Microsoft’s font-management instructions describe the Windows options.

If several Windows areas are affected, review language settings
In Windows 11, open Settings → Time & language → Language & region. Check the installed languages and the Windows display language. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and 11, though labels and page layouts can vary by version. Use Microsoft’s Windows language settings guide.

Do not remove a language or change the system locale casually. A legacy non-Unicode application may depend on a particular locale, and changing that setting is not a general-purpose font fix.

Use DISM and System File Checker only when broad problems persist
If the symptom affects multiple Windows areas and continues after checking language settings, Windows’ built-in repair tools can check for component-store and system-file problems. They do not establish that font substitution caused the symptom. Follow Microsoft’s sequence from an administrator Command Prompt:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for that scan to complete. - Restart Windows, then watch whether the issue returns.
Microsoft documents these steps for Windows 10 and 11 in its System File Checker guidance. A successful scan or temporary improvement does not guarantee that the symptom will stay away.

What to send support if it still happens
Give Microsoft or the affected app’s publisher enough detail to distinguish a Windows-wide problem from a document or application issue. Include:
