If Pinyin or Japanese kana-to-kanji conversion works in other apps but the selected characters vanish in an Android SSH terminal, the problem may be the terminal app’s text-input handling—not your keyboard. Chinese and Japanese keyboards compose text and send the chosen candidate as committed text; a terminal designed mainly for key events such as Ctrl, Esc, and Tab must also handle Android’s composition and text-commit callbacks for that workflow to work.
Why Chinese and Japanese input can fail in a terminal
With Pinyin or kana-to-kanji input, the keyboard typically builds a composition, displays candidate words, and sends the selected characters to the editor as committed text. Android’s InputConnection API defines the interaction between an input method editor (IME) and an app’s text editor, including composing text, marking a composing region, and finishing composition. Android advises developers to test with multiple IMEs because their behavior varies.
An SSH terminal is not always an ordinary text field. It may prioritize terminal key events—such as Ctrl combinations, arrows, Esc, or Tab—or may not handle the IME’s composing and committed-text operations as expected. The keyboard can therefore show candidates even though choosing one does not put the characters into the remote shell. That is a plausible app-side explanation, not proof that every failure has the same cause.

- Try ordinary text. In the SSH terminal, enter a short ASCII word. Then open a basic text field in another app and try the same Chinese or Japanese IME, selecting a candidate.
- Compare the result. If the IME commits text in the other app but the selected candidate disappears only in one terminal, focus your troubleshooting on that terminal’s input path. This comparison is a useful clue, not a definitive diagnosis of every possible cause.
- Note your setup. Record the terminal app and version, Android build, IME, and whether you are using the on-screen keyboard or a physical keyboard. Behavior can differ across those components.
Try these fixes and workarounds
Use a text-entry or paste route in Termux
Termux’s terminal view has to balance raw terminal-key behavior with text entry. Its TerminalView source normally declares TYPE_NULL as its input type and also implements handling for committed text. The source illustrates why terminal controls and IME composition can be difficult to reconcile; it does not mean Termux discards all committed text.

A user report in Termux issue #5290 describes swiping the extra-key bar to reveal a text input view, entering text there, and pasting candidates into the terminal. It also describes manually showing the soft keyboard when a physical keyboard is connected. These are reported workarounds, not guaranteed fixes for every version or device.
Check your Termux version for composition-preview support
Termux pull request #5242 describes an opt-in “IME Composing Preview” setting. The proposed behavior displays composing text before commit and sends committed text through the terminal input path. The pull request was open when checked on October 7, 2026; that does not establish that the feature is available in a stable release. Check the release notes and settings for the version installed on your device rather than assuming the option is present.

Test another terminal only after checking its input behavior
When comparing apps, look for clear documentation that the terminal accepts both composing and committed text through Android’s input connection, and check whether control keys remain usable. VibeTerm’s FAQ says its implementation uses Android text input and sends committed text as UTF-8 over SSH while retaining control keys. That is the vendor’s description of its own implementation, not an independent test or a guarantee for every device and configuration. Available sources do not establish a broadly tested ranking of Android SSH terminals for Chinese or Japanese IME support.

If an app does not handle the composition or commit callbacks it receives, installing a different IME cannot make the app accept those callbacks. Android places this interaction at the editor and InputConnection boundary. A different keyboard may be worth testing when the IME itself is suspect, but it is not a general remedy for a terminal that does not process committed text.

What changes when you connect a physical keyboard?
The Termux report in issue #5290 describes a particular Bluetooth or USB keyboard setup in which terminal input was limited to ASCII and the Chinese candidate bar disappeared. The report also says that enforce-char-based-input = true did not restore composition in that setup. This is one user’s environment-specific report, not evidence that every physical keyboard causes the same problem. It does mean a physical keyboard should not be treated as the general fix; compare the on-screen-keyboard behavior and the text-entry workaround instead.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Android’s API documentation, Termux source and issue tracking, and terminal-app documentation support the explanation that composition handling matters. They do not establish how common the failure is, which app works best across devices, or that one workaround will succeed on every Android build and IME.
