If Hindi text in Adobe Illustrator appears split, or conjuncts and matras are misplaced, check the text’s encoding, the font’s Devanagari shaping support, and Illustrator’s Indic text composer. Changing the keyboard alone will not fix how Unicode text is shaped.
Why Devanagari half forms break in Illustrator
In Unicode Devanagari, a half form is usually not a separate character you type. It is a visual form produced when a text-shaping engine interprets a sequence of characters and selects glyphs from a compatible font. For example, the consonant cluster त्न can be encoded as U+0924 DEVANAGARI LETTER TA, U+094D DEVANAGARI SIGN VIRAMA, and U+0928 DEVANAGARI LETTER NA. Depending on the font and shaping engine, that sequence may appear as a conjunct ligature or as a half-ta form followed by na. The Unicode Consortium’s Indic FAQ explains that the rendering engine is responsible for displaying characters in the proper order and shape.
That distinction matters because input, text encoding, font coverage, and rendering are separate parts of the process. A keyboard supplies characters; it does not determine whether Illustrator shapes their sequence correctly. A legacy font-specific encoding is also different from Unicode Devanagari, and changing fonts will not automatically convert legacy-encoded text.
Fix the most common Illustrator shaping settings
Adobe documents Indic options and Middle Eastern & South Asian composers for correct shaping of many non-Western scripts. Menu names can differ by Illustrator version and platform, so look for the equivalent controls in your installed version.

- Enable Indic options. In Illustrator, open Edit > Preferences > Type and enable Show Indic Options. On macOS, preferences are available from the Illustrator application menu rather than Edit.
- Choose an Indic-capable composer. Select the affected text, open the Paragraph panel, and choose Middle Eastern & South Asian Every-line Composer. The Single-line Composer is another available option; the Every-line Composer was part of the accepted fix in the documented case.
- Set the text language. With the text selected, open the Character panel and set its language dropdown to Hindi, if that option is available.
- Confirm the font supports Devanagari shaping. Try a Devanagari font with appropriate script support. The Unicode FAQ identifies the Noto family as covering Indic scripts and names Microsoft Mangal as a Devanagari font; availability and glyph behavior can vary by system and font version.
These settings match the accepted resolution in an Adobe Community discussion about Hindi characters displaying incorrectly: enable Indic Languages, select the Middle Eastern & South Asian Every-line Composer, and choose Hindi in the Character language dropdown. Adobe’s Illustrator documentation for Asian scripts describes the Indic options and composers.
Check whether the text is Unicode or legacy-encoded
Before changing fonts or retyping, establish what kind of text you have. Unicode Devanagari stores the script’s characters in Unicode; legacy fonts may instead use font-specific character mappings. Text typed with a legacy layout can look correct only with its original font and may turn into unrelated Latin characters or symbols when that font is changed. The Adobe Community discussion notes this distinction, but legacy encoding is only one possible cause—not an explanation for every broken Hindi text issue.

- If the text remains Devanagari when you change to another suitable Devanagari font, investigate the composer, language setting, and font shaping.
- If changing the font turns the text into unrelated characters, investigate whether it was created using a legacy font-specific encoding. Changing the font alone does not convert that text to Unicode.
- If you are unsure, compare a short sample with the same text entered or pasted into a Unicode-aware application. This comparison can help narrow the cause, but it is not a guaranteed encoding test.
Verify Windows language resources
On Windows, Adobe says the appropriate language and font packs must be installed for the language you want to use. If Hindi is missing from Illustrator’s language controls, or Devanagari text still does not render as expected after selecting the composer and a suitable font, check that Windows has the relevant Hindi language and font resources installed. Test a conjunct and matra before repairing the document
Use a short, known Devanagari sample that includes a conjunct and a vowel sign. Compare how it appears in Illustrator with how it appears in a Unicode-aware application. If ordinary letters look right but conjuncts or matras do not, focus first on the composer, language setting, and font. If the text changes into unrelated characters when the font changes, focus on possible legacy encoding. These comparisons help isolate likely causes; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own.

Use invisible joiners only when the text requires them
Unicode permits a zero-width joiner (ZWJ) after a virama to request a half-form sequence in specific contexts, while a zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ) can request an overt virama or full-letter behavior. The Unicode Standard’s Devanagari examples illustrate these controls, including the sequence क् + ष forming क्ष. Do not insert invisible joiners as a general repair: they change shaping behavior and should be used only when the intended spelling or layout calls for them.

Replacing individual glyphs may make one instance look right, but Devanagari shaping depends on the character sequence, surrounding text, font, and rendering behavior. A glyph-level adjustment may not work in another word or after editing. First correct the underlying Unicode text, font, language, and composer; use Illustrator’s Glyphs panel only when you deliberately need a specific design variation and have verified the text itself.

Illustrator’s language-composition capabilities can change over time. An Adobe employee wrote on July 7, 2026 that composing text in any language or script without UI changes was available in beta and was coming to the main app; that statement does not establish that the feature is generally available in the main app. Use the controls present in your installed version rather than assuming a beta feature has shipped.
