“Blurry” is a reasonable way to describe audio that sounds muffled, distant, hollow, distorted, or crackly, but it does not identify one specific Windows fault. Start by checking which output device is selected, then test audio enhancements and the device’s default format. These reversible checks can help narrow down the cause; no single setting fixes every case.

First, find out what sounds blurry

Before changing settings, compare a few kinds of audio: music or video, app sounds, Windows notifications, and calls. Note whether the problem affects everything, one app, system sounds only, or one pair of speakers or headphones. Also consider whether it began after a Windows update, driver change, new headset, Bluetooth connection, or settings change. These clues help narrow the scope; none proves a cause by itself.

  • Only one app: The issue may be limited to that app or its audio route rather than Windows output generally.
  • Only notifications or other system sounds: Compare them with ordinary media. A difference is useful to report when seeking support, but does not establish a particular Windows audio mode as the cause.
  • Only one output device: Compare another output device you already have, if available. If the problem follows one endpoint, that points toward a device-, connection-, or driver-specific issue.
  • All content on all outputs: Continue with Windows output settings and diagnostics before assuming the hardware needs replacement.

Check that Windows is using the intended output

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound and select the speakers or headphones you intend to use under Output. A connected monitor, headset, Bluetooth device, or other endpoint may be selected instead. Microsoft’s sound-problem guide also recommends confirming that the preferred speakers or headphones are selected: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Play the same audio after selecting the intended device. If the sound changes, the route mattered; if not, keep that output selected and continue.

Turn audio enhancements off temporarily

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound, select the active output device, and set Audio enhancements to Off. Play the same content again so you can compare like with like.

Microsoft says, “Audio enhancements can cause sound distortion on some devices.” Disabling them may resolve audio issues, but it is a test rather than a universal fix; enhancements may provide processing you want. If turning them off makes no difference or makes the sound worse, turn them back on. See Microsoft’s distorted or crackling audio troubleshooting steps.

Try a different default audio format

If the sound is still poor, open the selected output device’s advanced sound settings and try a different available Default format. Test the same audio after each change. Microsoft notes that an unsupported or incorrect audio format can reduce sound quality.

There is no single sample rate or bit depth to choose for every PC: the options depend on the device and its driver. If a new format does not help, restore the previous selection rather than assuming a higher number will sound better.

Run Windows audio troubleshooting

On Windows 11, Microsoft’s general guidance gives this route: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Audio. Follow the prompts and note what the troubleshooter reports or changes. The labels and available steps can vary between Windows versions and updates.

Microsoft’s guidance describes using Get Help diagnostics for Windows 10. Its troubleshooting pages cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it after that date. A Windows 10 PC can continue to work, but its support status matters for ongoing maintenance.

Update or reinstall the audio driver carefully

An outdated or corrupted audio driver can cause distorted sound, according to Microsoft. First identify the PC or audio device so you use a driver intended for that exact hardware.

  1. Open Device Manager and locate the audio device.
  2. Use its driver update option, then test the same audio again.
  3. If the issue persists, Microsoft’s symptom-specific guidance advises uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the latest one from the device manufacturer’s website. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

Prefer Windows Update or the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s support channel for drivers. A general audio symptom alone is not a reason to buy replacement hardware or install third-party driver-updater software.

Restart Windows audio services if the problem continues

Microsoft’s distorted-audio guidance also suggests restarting the audio services. Open Services, find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and restart them. Then test audio again. If service controls or labels differ on your system, use Microsoft’s current instructions rather than changing unfamiliar settings.

What the checks can—and cannot—tell you

Microsoft lists audio enhancements, an unsupported or incorrect format, outdated or corrupted drivers, and stopped audio services as possible factors in distorted or poor-quality sound. Confirming the output device is also part of its general troubleshooting guidance. The tests above help distinguish those possibilities by checking whether the symptom changes with the route, enhancement setting, format, driver, or service state; they do not diagnose a particular PC by themselves.

Windows supports multiple audio signal-processing modes, and drivers report supported modes and associated audio processing objects. That technical context helps explain why processing can differ by driver and mode, but it does not show that a particular mode caused an individual listener’s “blurry” sound. See Microsoft Learn’s overview of audio signal processing modes.

If the symptom remains after these checks, record which content and outputs are affected, what changed before it began, and which settings altered the result. That information can help the device manufacturer or support technician narrow the next step without guessing at a replacement.
