A black screen or failed startup does not, by itself, mean your BIOS is corrupted. First identify whether the computer still reaches firmware setup, whether the problem began after a settings change or failed update, and whether there are hardware warning signs. Resetting BIOS settings restores configuration defaults; BIOS recovery attempts to restore firmware. They are different procedures, and the right one depends on your computer’s exact model.
Start by identifying what failed
Before changing settings or attempting recovery, note the exact computer model and record what happens when you press the power button. Capture any error text, beep pattern, or status-light pattern, whether the manufacturer logo appears, and whether the problem began after a BIOS/UEFI update or a settings change. “No POST” and a black screen describe symptoms; they do not establish the cause.
Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model. BIOS recovery availability, prerequisites, files, and key combinations vary. Dell’s guidance, for example, distinguishes suspected firmware corruption from hardware error messages and warns against using BIOS recovery for physical damage or liquid spills. Dell’s BIOS recovery guidance explains its symptom and recovery paths.
Choose the path that matches the symptom
- The computer enters setup, and the issue followed a settings change: consider restoring BIOS defaults after recording settings you may need to reapply.
- An update failed, or the manufacturer reports firmware corruption: check whether the exact model supports BIOS recovery and follow its official instructions.
- You see a hardware error, physical damage, or evidence of liquid exposure: use manufacturer diagnostics or seek service instead of trying generic firmware recovery.
Reset BIOS settings only when configuration is the likely cause
Restoring defaults changes firmware configuration; it does not reinstall or repair the BIOS firmware. It can be a reasonable troubleshooting step when the computer still enters setup and the problem followed a configuration change. The menu name and reset procedure differ by model, so use the computer’s own instructions rather than assuming a particular key or menu label.

- Small and key chain design: The thumb drive is so small and handy that you can put it in your pocket. With the built in key ring to help you to attach it to your backpack or wallet and no need to worry it will loose, carrying the data wherever you go.
- Plenty of storage for you : You can use the 32gb zip dirve to back up your photos, record good memory videos, listen to music or books in your car, give power point presentations or projects, to make Windows recovery and general files back up......
- Broad compatibility : This 32gb jump drive supports almost all operating systems including Windows Windows 2000/7/8/8.1/10/Vista/XP/2000/ME, Linux and MacOs 10.3 and intel. Compatible with any device with a USB port.
- Default format: FAT32, you can reformat it to exFAT if needed.
Before resetting, record settings you or your organization configured. Defaults can change boot order, Secure Boot, virtualization, TPM, and custom performance settings. Dell says its factory-default reset does not delete files, but settings may need to be restored afterward. See Dell’s instructions for restoring BIOS/UEFI defaults; this is guidance for Dell computers, not a universal procedure.
Use firmware recovery only with model-specific instructions
BIOS recovery is intended to restore firmware on supported systems when firmware is suspected to be corrupted or an update failed. It is not interchangeable with loading default settings, and an unsuccessful startup alone is not enough reason to attempt it. Confirm the exact model, required BIOS file, prerequisites, and supported recovery method on the manufacturer’s current support page.

- The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
- Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
- Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
- No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
- Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
Dell: check whether hard-drive or USB recovery is supported
Dell documents recovery from a file on the hard drive for supported configurations, as well as recovery from USB when the hard-drive method is unavailable or does not work. These are not interchangeable universal steps: eligibility and initiation instructions depend on the computer. Follow Dell’s model-specific recovery guidance before preparing recovery media or using a key combination. A USB drive alone cannot repair the system; the recovery method and firmware file must match the model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDell states that its BIOS recovery affects only BIOS/UEFI firmware and leaves data and the Windows installation unchanged. Treat that as Dell’s description of its recovery procedure, not a guarantee for every manufacturer, reset, or repair scenario.

ASUS: use the BIOS file for the exact model
ASUS documents a failed-update flow that may enter BIOS recovery mode and continue through an ASUS firmware update screen. Its instructions call for the BIOS file corresponding to the specific model; they also describe EC or RTC reset as an option in some cases. Consult ASUS’s boot-failure and no-display troubleshooting instructions and do not substitute a BIOS file for a similar-looking model.
Lenovo: verify the product’s current service instructions
Lenovo’s recovery documentation describes a process involving BIOS update media and a Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper for certain models. Handling an internal jumper is a model-specific service procedure, not a general laptop fix. Check current documentation for the exact product before opening the computer or touching internal components: Lenovo’s BIOS update failure recovery guide.

- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
Stop and escalate when recovery is unsafe or unsuccessful
Do not keep repeating generic recovery attempts if the manufacturer’s supported procedure is unavailable or fails. Dell advises against BIOS recovery when a computer has physical damage or liquid damage and directs users with hardware error messages to diagnostics. Follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic and service route, or consult a qualified repair provider, when there is damage, a hardware failure indication, or no supported recovery path.
