If Windows reports “Unsupported 16-Bit Application” when you launch an npm-installed CLI, the executable may be a tiny placeholder left behind because npm blocked the package’s postinstall script—not an actual 16-bit program. That was the reported cause for one OpenCode installation, but the dialog alone does not identify the cause. Check the npm warning and the affected package before trying that fix.
What the error means—and what it does not prove
Windows is rejecting the file it tried to launch. The message does not, by itself, prove that the program is literally 16-bit or that npm’s script-approval policy caused the problem. A wrong-platform or damaged executable is another possibility.
In a July 2026 report, a Windows 11 Pro 24H2 user said that installing opencode-ai@1.17.19 globally with npm 12.0.0 and Node 24.18.0 left a 479-byte top-level bin/opencode.exe. The package also contained an optional Windows package with the actual binary. The reporter’s npm log said the package’s postinstall script was blocked because it was not covered by allowScripts; the wrapper and platform package were present, but the postinstall step that replaced the placeholder had not run. Check whether npm blocked the package script
- Identify the exact package and installation. Record the CLI command, npm package name, how you installed or updated it, your Windows version, and Node and npm versions. Keep the full npm output, including warnings.
- Look for an explicit script-approval warning. The key clue is a message naming the package and saying its lifecycle script was blocked or was not covered by
allowScripts. A matching OpenCode report showed this warning and suggested a package-scoped approval command. OpenCode issue report - Check the executable the command is trying to launch. Confirm its path and whether it appears to be a tiny placeholder rather than the expected platform binary. Do not treat the 479-byte measurement from the OpenCode report as a general threshold; it was one reporter’s observation for that package and installation.
- Compare the evidence with the package’s Windows instructions. If there is no blocked-script warning, or the executable is not a placeholder, stop before applying the OpenCode-specific recovery. Check the package maintainer’s official Windows installation or update guidance and investigate whether the binary is corrupted or intended for another platform.
Approve only the reviewed package when its install script is needed
npm documents allow-scripts as a comma-separated list of packages allowed to run install-time lifecycle scripts, including preinstall, install, and postinstall. Its documentation describes the option for one-off and global contexts, including npm install -g. npm install documentation
If you verified that the warning names the package you intended to install, reviewed the package, and its install script is necessary, use the package-scoped approval form shown by npm. For the reported OpenCode package, that command was:

npm install -g --allow-scripts=opencode-ai
Use the actual package name from your warning rather than copying opencode-ai for a different CLI. This command is for a global npm installation; follow the package’s instructions if your installation method differs.

For the specific reported OpenCode installation, the user said that manually running the package’s postinstall script replaced the placeholder and made opencode --version return 1.17.19. That is a reported outcome, not an independently tested or universal repair. First confirm the actual global package path and that its contents match the package’s current maintainer instructions. After a package-specific recovery, check the CLI’s version command and confirm it launches. Do not run an install script from a path you have not verified or assume that this OpenCode path applies to another package.

A blocked postinstall is plausible when npm explicitly names the package, the expected platform binary is present, and the executable being launched is a placeholder. If those clues are absent, treat the issue as a different binary failure rather than forcing the same repair. Review the CLI maintainer’s Windows guidance and investigate an incompatible, corrupted, or incorrectly downloaded executable. A separate CLI issue describes an invalid executable after an update and a possible platform-binary mismatch. Claude Code issue report
