If AI features stopped working on a rooted Pixel, the documented 2024 workaround is to reset Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and AI Core from Safe Mode, reboot, and update Google Play Services and Google Photos. It may restore features such as Magic Editor or Call Screen, but the procedure is a third-party report for rooted Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones—not an official Google fix—and its suggested Play Integrity fingerprint cause is unproven.
What “AI Core not working” can mean on a rooted Pixel
AI Core is a Google system component used by some on-device or assisted AI functions. On a rooted Pixel, a failure may appear as a feature that crashes, refuses to download a model, disappears from an app, or returns an error after an Android or Google app update. The January 24, 2024 DroidWin guide describes reports from rooted Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro owners rather than a compatibility list for every Pixel generation or every current software build. Treat the affected-feature list as historical reports, not a guarantee that your phone will show exactly the same symptoms.
The guide lists reports involving:
- Google Photos Magic Editor and other Magic Tools, including crashes in some cases.
- Magic Audio Eraser and Best Take.
- Recorder summaries.
- Video Boost.
- Some automated replies in Messages.
- Direct My Call, Hold My Call, Call Screen, and Phone app recording.
These functions depend on more than AI Core alone. Google Photos, Google Play Services, the Phone or Recorder app, account eligibility, downloaded models, device software, and integrity checks can all affect availability. Therefore, a feature failing after rooting does not by itself prove that one package or one setting is responsible.
What is known about the suspected root cause
DroidWin proposes that a custom device fingerprint stored through a build.prop change could be involved when the phone is being configured to pass Play Integrity. The companion video repeats that idea as a possible explanation. The wording is important: the guide does not establish the fingerprint as the cause, and it does not show that every rooted Pixel with a custom fingerprint will lose AI features. Play Integrity status can change as Google components and server-side checks change, so a configuration that worked previously may behave differently after an update.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
No current official Google statement in the cited material confirms that this workaround restores AI Core, that a particular fingerprint is required, or that rooting universally disables these features. The procedure below is consequently a troubleshooting experiment with documented risks, not a supported repair.
Before you reset Google system apps
Removing updates and clearing data for core Google packages can change more than the AI feature you are testing. The DroidWin guide specifically warns that you may have to set up a smartwatch again and that payment cards may be deleted from Google Pay. Its warning does not define the outcome for every current Pixel build, account, watch, or app version, so plan for both possibilities.
- Make sure you can complete your watch’s pairing and setup process again if required.
- Record which cards are present in Google Pay and confirm that you can add them again under your bank’s verification rules.
- Know your Google account sign-in details and any screen-lock credentials needed after a reboot.
- Note your current AI symptoms, Android version, Google Photos version, root configuration, and Play Integrity result. This gives you a before-and-after comparison and makes a support request more useful.
- If the phone is needed for payments, work authentication, or emergency calling, choose a maintenance window rather than performing the reset immediately.
Android labels vary by release. On some builds, “Storage & cache” may appear as “Storage,” and the command may be labelled “Clear storage” rather than “Clear data.” Use the equivalent command for the same app; do not uninstall the entire application unless Android presents only the update-removal option described below.

The documented reset procedure
Follow the sequence in order. The guide’s method removes updates from three Google packages, clears their local data, restarts into normal Android, and then updates selected components.
- Boot the Pixel into Safe Mode. Use the Safe Mode method appropriate to your Pixel’s Android version. Safe Mode limits third-party apps while you perform the reset; the guide does not prescribe a particular button combination, so consult the on-device power-menu instructions for your build.
- Open the app list. Go to Settings > Apps. If your build has a separate “See all apps” screen, open it.
- Remove Google Play Services updates. Open Google Play Services, use the overflow menu if present, and select Uninstall updates. Confirm the warning. This returns the package to the version bundled with the phone.
- Repeat for Google Play Store. Return to the app list, open Google Play Store, and choose Uninstall updates.
- Repeat for AI Core. Find AI Core in the same app list and choose Uninstall updates. If AI Core is hidden, use the app-list menu to show system apps; labels and visibility controls differ by Android release.
- Clear data for each package. Open Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and AI Core one at a time. For each, select Storage & cache (or the equivalent), then Clear storage or Clear data, and confirm. Clearing cache alone is not the reset described by the guide.
- Restart normally. Leave Safe Mode and reboot the phone into the regular Android environment. Allow the system a few minutes to rebuild services before testing; immediately opening several dependent apps can produce temporary update or sign-in prompts.
- Update Google Play Services and Google Photos. Use the Play Store to bring both components to the versions offered for your device. The guide specifically calls for updating these two packages after the reboot. If an update is not offered immediately, wait for the store and system services to finish initializing and check again rather than installing an unrelated package.
- Test the failed feature. Reproduce the original action in the app where it failed. Test one feature at a time—for example, create a supported edit in Photos, record a short clip for an audio tool, or place a call that previously triggered a screening feature—so you can identify which component changed.
The source describes this as a check, not a guaranteed fix. A successful result means the feature works on your particular combination of Pixel software, account, root setup, and Google component versions at that moment; it does not prove the proposed fingerprint theory.
If AI features still fail after the reset
DroidWin suggests two additional experiments, both dependent on the root setup you already use:
Try the guide’s alternate root-module variants
The guide discusses switching between named variants of the root modules involved in its configuration. It does not establish a universally correct module, and the names and compatibility of those variants can change. Do not substitute an arbitrary module from an unrelated source. Make one change at a time, keep a record of the previous configuration, and retain a recovery path before rebooting.

Recheck Play Integrity with the existing fingerprint
If your current setup can pass the relevant Play Integrity test without changing the fingerprint again, the guide recommends trying that state and repeating the reset sequence. This is not an instruction to falsify device identity or to assume that a passing test guarantees AI support. Integrity verdicts and Google’s feature eligibility checks are separate decisions, and a passing result may coexist with a broken or unavailable AI feature.
If neither experiment helps, stop cycling through fingerprints and module combinations. Repeatedly removing updates and clearing data can create additional account, pairing, or payment work. Capture the exact error, app version, Android build, root method, module versions, and integrity result, then seek support that explicitly understands your rooted configuration. A support representative may require an unmodified software state before troubleshooting, so ask what evidence is useful before making further changes.

What the procedure changes—and what it cannot prove
| Action | Intended effect | Known limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall updates for Google Play Services | Returns the service to the phone’s bundled version so it can rebuild its state. | The guide warns that system-dependent functions can need reconfiguration; it does not document behavior for every current version. |
| Uninstall updates for Google Play Store | Resets the store component before it retrieves current packages again. | Store initialization and updates may take time after reboot; no universal success rate is established. |
| Uninstall updates for AI Core | Reverts the AI Core package before its data is cleared. | AI Core availability and model downloads vary by device, software, account, and region; the guide covers rooted Pixel 8/8 Pro reports. |
| Clear storage/data for all three apps | Removes local state that could be inconsistent after rooting or updates. | The guide specifically warns about possible smartwatch re-setup and deleted Google Pay cards. |
| Change a root module or fingerprint | Tests whether the existing integrity-related configuration is interacting with the failure. | The proposed relationship is speculative, and changing root components can introduce new boot, update, or app-compatibility problems. |
Why a successful reset may be temporary
The reset changes local package versions and data, while several relevant decisions occur outside the phone. Google can update Play Services, Photos, AI Core, or server-side eligibility independently. A future Android update, app update, account change, model download, or integrity-policy change can therefore reintroduce the symptom. Keep the versions and root settings that worked recorded, but do not treat them as a permanent recipe.
Feature names also conceal different requirements. Recorder summaries and on-device tools may need a model download; Photos tools may require a supported account and app build; calling features depend on the Phone app, carrier, country, and language. The cited guide does not provide a current matrix for those requirements. If only one feature fails while others work, investigate that feature’s own availability before assuming AI Core is globally broken.

A March 2025 Reddit discussion contains user reports about other AI Core-related failures and an anecdote attributed to Google Support concerning Gemini Nano downloads on a phone with an unlocked bootloader. That thread is user discussion, not an official policy document, and it concerns a different reported situation. It should not be used as proof that the 2024 guide’s custom-fingerprint explanation is correct or that every unlocked or rooted Pixel is barred from AI features. When to stop troubleshooting and restore a supported state
Stop the experiment if the phone becomes unstable, repeatedly loses core services, cannot complete updates, or requires payment and watch functions you cannot reconfigure. At that point, the safest diagnostic comparison is a fully supported software state: preserve needed data, follow the documented unrooting or factory-reset process for your exact Pixel model, and test AI features before restoring root modifications. A factory reset or unroot is a major change and is not part of the DroidWin procedure, so obtain model-specific instructions rather than improvising.
For a support request, include:
- Pixel model and Android build number.
- Country or region and Google account type, where relevant to the feature.
- The exact feature, app, error message, and whether it crashes or simply remains unavailable.
- Google Play Services, Google Photos, AI Core, Phone, Recorder, and Photos versions as applicable.
- Root method, active modules, any
build.propfingerprint changes, and the date the failure began. - Whether the Safe Mode reset changed the behavior and whether Play Integrity was passing at the time.
Source and date boundaries
The step sequence, feature reports, uncertainty about the cause, and warnings about watches and Google Pay come from DroidWin’s written guide, updated January 24, 2024: read the guide. Its companion video description repeats the possible fingerprint cause and the module-switch alternative: watch the companion video. Neither source is an official Google validation, and neither establishes present-day compatibility for every Pixel generation or software release.
