If a WordPress comment form is missing, first check the site-wide discussion defaults and the affected post’s own comment settings. If the form appears but submission fails, capture the exact error and test configuration changes one at a time. If a comment submits but is not visible, check moderation and spam before troubleshooting the form.
Check whether comments are allowed
- Review the site default: In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Discussion and check the option that allows comments on new posts. The setting is a default; it does not necessarily change existing posts. See WordPress’s Settings Discussion screen documentation.
- Inspect the affected post or page: Edit it and confirm comments are enabled for that specific item. Individual post settings can override the site default.
- Check restrictions: Look for settings that automatically close comments on older content or require visitors to be registered and logged in. Either restriction can explain why comments are unavailable on one item or for one visitor.
Dashboard labels and controls can vary with the editor and WordPress setup. If the setting is not where expected, check the documentation for your installation or ask the site maintainer where that post’s discussion controls are configured.
Find out whether the problem is limited to a page or template
Compare the affected page with another post where comments work. If the form is missing only in one view, the cause may be that view’s theme display controls or template rather than the general discussion setting. A homepage and a single-post page can use different layouts.

Theme-specific settings and menu names differ; a support thread documents one example involving a “Show Comments” setting, not a universal path.
- If the site uses a block theme or custom templates, ask the site maintainer to inspect the relevant template. Avoid editing production theme code without a rollback plan.
- WordPress themes need specific coding to display threaded comments. That applies to nested comment presentation; it does not by itself prove that a missing comment form is a theme bug.

If the form appears but submission fails
Before changing settings, record the exact error and where it occurs. A failed submission and a missing form are different symptoms, and the error can help identify the next check.
- Note the affected page URL, the time of the attempt, the browser, and the exact error text or redirect.
- Check whether the problem affects all visitors or only one browser, account, or network.
- Compare the affected page with another page where comments submit successfully.
For a reported error-page redirect, a WordPress.org support response suggested checking permalink rules, HTTPS address settings where applicable, caching, firewall rules, and plugin conflicts. These are diagnostic leads from that case, not guaranteed fixes for every submission failure. See the support discussion about comment submission trigger errors.

Test changes safely
- Refresh rewrite rules if appropriate: In the dashboard, open Settings > Permalinks and save the existing settings. A support response suggested this for its reported redirect error; it is not a universal remedy.
- Verify HTTPS addresses: If the site uses SSL, check that the WordPress Address and Site Address use HTTPS. Do not change either address casually; incorrect values can disrupt access to the site.
- Clear the relevant cache: Clear the site, host, or browser cache that may be serving an outdated page, then try submitting again.
- Review firewall behavior: Check whether a security or hosting firewall is blocking the request. If you are unsure which rule to adjust, ask the site maintainer or host rather than broadly disabling protection.
- Isolate plugin conflicts: When possible, test on a staging site. Disable or enable one plugin at a time, repeat the same submission, and record the result. Restore the original plugin state after each test.
If staging is unavailable, perform changes that may affect the live site only during a controlled maintenance window, keep a record of the original configuration, and restore it when the test is complete.

A comment can be awaiting approval or marked as spam rather than appearing immediately. In the dashboard, inspect the comments awaiting moderation and the spam queue. WordPress’s comments documentation explains that comments may be held for approval or filtered as spam. Spam-management tools are optional ways to manage spam; they are not established fixes for a missing form or a failed submission.

Choose the next step by risk and reversibility

What to provide when asking for help
If the settings are correct and a controlled theme or plugin check does not reveal the cause, give the theme or plugin maintainer—or a WordPress developer—the affected page URL, exact error, steps to reproduce the problem, and relevant theme and plugin versions. Include what happened when you compared the page with a working post, default theme, or staging site. Those details help distinguish a configuration issue from a template or compatibility problem.
