If a Windows 11 app is frozen or stays open after you try to close it, first try closing it normally. If it will not respond, use Task Manager to end the app’s task, then reopen it. If the problem keeps returning, update the app and Windows, try the app’s repair option if available, and follow the publisher’s instructions for further help.

First, identify what “not closing” means

These symptoms call for different steps: the window may be frozen, the app may still appear in Task Manager after you close its window, or the app may launch again automatically when you sign in. A process that remains active is not, by itself, proof of a Windows fault. The steps below address a recognizable app that will not exit or keeps hanging; they do not diagnose an unknown background process.

Close the app, then end its task if it is stuck

  1. Try a normal close. If the app still responds, save your work and close it using its usual close control. Reopen it and check whether the issue recurs.
  2. Force-close an unresponsive app. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Under Processes, select the app you recognize and choose End task.
  3. Reopen the app. Launch it normally and see whether it works as expected.

Ending a task is a forceful close, so unsaved changes may be lost. Save first if the app lets you. Task Manager also lists background and Windows processes; do not end an unfamiliar system process just because its name is unfamiliar. Microsoft describes ending unresponsive processes in its Windows performance guidance and gives app-specific examples for Outlook and Edge; those examples do not establish identical behavior for every app.

If the app keeps hanging, update it and Windows

For a Microsoft Store app, check for Windows updates, then open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Close and reopen the app after installing available updates. Also check whether the app supports Windows 11. Microsoft outlines these steps in its Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guidance. For apps installed outside the Store, check the app’s own update instructions.

Try Repair before Reset

Repair a supported app in Settings

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app, open its menu, then select Advanced options, if shown.
  3. Select Repair, if available, and follow any prompts.

Repair is not offered for every app. If the option is missing, do not assume Windows is malfunctioning; the app may not support it.

Use Reset only after checking what it changes

If Repair does not help, the same Advanced options page may offer Reset. Read the app’s explanation first and preserve anything important: Reset can change the app’s state. Availability and effects depend on the app. Microsoft documents these options in its app and program repair guidance.

Check Control Panel for some desktop programs

For a traditional desktop application, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and see whether the program offers Repair or Change. These choices are application-dependent; they are not available for every program.

Reinstall or contact the app publisher if simpler fixes fail

If the app still fails after updating and trying an available repair, reinstalling may be appropriate. For a Microsoft Store app, reinstall only after the earlier troubleshooting steps. For any app with a dedicated support channel, use the publisher’s current instructions, especially before removing an app that may store local data. An isolated app hang does not, on its own, justify resetting or reinstalling Windows.

Disable startup only if the app launches at sign-in

If the app opens automatically each time you sign in, manage its startup entry through Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. This prevents or allows automatic launch at sign-in; it does not close a process that is already stuck. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 startup app guidance.

Choose the least disruptive next step

  • One-time freeze: close normally if possible; otherwise end the recognized app task and reopen it.
  • Repeated failure: update Windows and the app, then try Repair if the app provides it.
  • Repair did not help: consider Reset only after reviewing its consequences; reinstall or contact the publisher if appropriate.
  • App reopens at sign-in: change its startup setting rather than treating that behavior as a stuck process.

Windows menus and recovery options vary by app and Windows build. If the problem persists, the app name, version, and what happens when you close it are useful details to give the publisher’s support team; without those specifics, a single root cause cannot be established.
