If your Mac feels slow after installing macOS 27, check storage, active apps, memory pressure, background activity, and disk health before blaming the update. The timing alone does not establish the cause. Start with reversible checks, then update macOS or seek help if the slowdown persists.
Check whether the slowdown is system-wide or limited to one app
Notice when the slowdown occurs: at startup, while using one particular app, or across the whole Mac. If only one app is slow or repeatedly hangs, investigate that app first. Apple lists incompatible apps among the possible causes of a slow Mac; check the app’s system requirements and confirm they match your Mac’s processor and graphics hardware. Apple’s general troubleshooting guide outlines other potential causes, including limited startup-disk space, memory demand, and disk problems: If your Mac runs slowly.
See whether the startup disk is running low on space
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Review the storage recommendations and identify large files you can safely remove or move.
- If you need to free space, move files to another disk or external storage, then delete from the startup disk files you no longer need.
Apple recommends freeing space on the startup disk as one check for a slow Mac. Moving files to external storage can address a space constraint; it does not, by itself, make the processor faster or resolve an incompatible app. If you need additional capacity, an external SSD is one option. Check your Mac’s ports and how much space you need before choosing a drive.
Use Activity Monitor to identify resource-heavy apps
Check CPU activity
Open Activity Monitor and select the CPU pane. It shows system, user, and idle CPU activity, which can help you spot a recognized app using substantial resources. Quit an app only if you recognize it and can safely stop your work in it. Apple explains the CPU view in its Activity Monitor guide.

Check memory pressure, not just unused RAM
In Activity Monitor, select Memory and look at the Memory Pressure graph and swap information while the slowdown is happening. Memory pressure gives more useful context than simply trying to maximize free memory: macOS manages memory, and unused RAM alone does not show that your Mac needs more. If pressure is high, try reducing the workload or checking whether a particular app is consuming unusually large resources. See Apple’s guide to checking whether your Mac needs more RAM.
Activity Monitor is a diagnostic tool, not a reason to force-quit unfamiliar system processes. If you change its update frequency, note that more frequent monitoring updates may themselves affect overall system performance; Apple documents this setting in its Activity Monitor update-frequency guide.

Check apps that keep running in the background
In macOS 27, an app can continue running in the background after you quit it, and Apple notes that this activity can affect performance. If you see an app still running and recognize it, you can stop it selectively:

- Choose Stop Running in Background.
To review background activity more broadly, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Background App Activity. Disabling an app here may stop expected syncing or automatic updates. If the app stops working as expected, turn its background activity back on. Apple describes the controls in its guide to apps that continue running in the background after you quit them.

Install available macOS 27 updates
Apple recommends macOS 27 updates and lists macOS 27.0.1 as including bug fixes. Its release notes do not promise that this update resolves every performance problem. Check Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update for an update available to your Mac. Apple’s macOS 27 update notes, published September 28, 2026, say the updates improve Mac stability, performance, or compatibility and are recommended for macOS 27 users. Apple also notes that software updates can affect performance or battery life, so an update is not a guaranteed fix for a slowdown.

If symptoms suggest a disk issue, use Disk Utility to verify the disk and try to repair it, following Apple’s instructions for your macOS version. A slowdown alone does not establish that the storage hardware has failed. If Disk Utility cannot resolve the problem, or the slowdown continues after these checks, contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider rather than guessing at a hardware cause.
