If a PC game launcher shows Install even though the game folder is still on your disk, do not delete that folder. First confirm the files exist, identify the launcher, and determine whether the problem is file detection or account visibility. Steam can re-add an existing library and re-index it; GOG GALAXY can point to the correct installation folder and verify files; the standard Epic Games Launcher cannot officially scan old files, although its Early Preview build can. An internal SSD helps only when an external drive is disconnecting, not when the real problem is an account, filter, cache, or entitlement.
Start by identifying what disappeared
Open File Explorer and browse to the drive where the game was installed. Confirm that the game’s main folder is still present and note the drive letter, such as D: or E:. A folder containing the executable and several large data files indicates that the download may be reusable. An empty folder, a changed drive letter, or a disconnected disk is a different problem.
Next, classify the launcher symptom:
- The game is visible in your library but the button says Install: the launcher has lost the path or its local installation record.
- The game is missing from the library entirely: check account, filters, cache, hidden-library settings, platform, refund, and code status before touching the files.
- The folder is missing: the launcher cannot re-index data that no longer exists; restore the drive or use a fresh installation.
Do not uninstall, rename, or delete the existing folder until the launcher has either recognized it or you have decided that a clean download is unavoidable. Re-downloading can consume many gigabytes and may overwrite the only usable copy.

Make Steam find an existing installation
Steam Support explains that “Games may appear uninstalled when Steam no longer recognizes the installation files.” The fix is to restore the library location rather than download the game immediately.

1. Add the library folder in Storage Manager
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings.
- Choose Downloads, then open Steam Library Folders (called Storage Manager in current Steam builds).
- Press the + button to add a storage location.
- Select the drive and the Steam library folder that contains the existing installation. Steam’s documented default location is
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon. - Let Steam update the library list, then return to Library and check the game.
Select the folder that contains steamapps, not the game’s deepest subfolder. If the library is on another drive, browse to that drive’s Steam library root.
2. Trigger recognition when the game still says Install
If the title remains marked uninstalled, click Install, choose the same library drive and location, and begin the operation. Steam can compare the requested destination with the files already present and re-index them instead of downloading every file. Watch the download panel: a short “discovering existing files” phase or a small download means the library was found. Do not cancel while Steam is checking the files.
3. Verify damaged or incomplete content
- Right-click the game in Steam Library and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. Run it for one game at a time; checking multiple games simultaneously can interfere with the process. Verification replaces missing or altered content but does not repair an unavailable drive or restore an account entitlement.

When an external Steam drive is the real cause
Steam’s own guidance says: “If you encounter this issue with an external drive, install Steam and your games to an internal drive instead.” This applies when the USB disk disconnects, powers down, changes its drive letter, or is not mounted when Steam starts. Move or reinstall the library to a stable internal SSD only after confirming that storage reliability is the problem. An SSD cannot make a game appear in an account, remove a filter, clear a cache, or correct a wrong library path.
Use the standard Epic Games Launcher when files already exist
Epic Games Store Support states: “The Epic Games Launcher does not currently support detecting previously installed game files.” If you removed the launcher or reinstalled Windows, Epic’s supported path is to install the games again through Library. Community techniques are unsupported and may fail, so keep the original folder until the new installation has been validated.
Supported approach: reinstall from Library
- Sign in to the Epic account that purchased or claimed the game.
- Open Library, select the game, and click Install.
- Choose the drive and destination you want Epic to use.
- Allow the installation to complete. If the old folder is in the way, select a new temporary destination rather than deleting the old data first.
This method may require a full download. It is the only standard-launcher procedure Epic documents as supported for a game whose installation record was lost.

If bandwidth is limited and the existing files are intact, Epic documents a workaround that sometimes avoids a full transfer:

- Pause the download.
- Exit Epic completely from its system-tray icon; closing the window alone may leave it running.
- Open the newly created download directory and copy the files from the old game folder into it, preserving the directory structure.
- Restart Epic and resume the installation.
Epic warns that this can still require a small download and may not work for every title. It is a recovery attempt, not an official scan feature. Do not overwrite the only copy of your files; make a backup or rename the original folder until Epic finishes checking the data.
Scan with Epic Games Launcher Early Preview
Epic’s Early Preview build includes a function that the standard launcher lacks. If you are using that build, open the Epic icon, choose Settings, open Library, and select Scan for installed games. Point the scan at the drives containing the game folders and allow it to finish before launching a title.

The command is specific to Early Preview. If you cannot see it, you are probably running the standard launcher, the build has changed, or the feature is unavailable to your account. In that case, use Epic’s supported reinstall path rather than assuming a hidden scan setting exists.
When an Epic game is missing from Library
A missing title in Epic Library is not proof that its files were erased. Resolve account and visibility issues before reinstalling.
Refresh the launcher and clear its web cache
- Exit Epic from the system tray.
- Start the launcher again and sign in.
- If the library remains stale, clear Epic’s webcache using Epic’s current support procedure, then restart the launcher.
- Open Library and refresh the list.
Cache clearing affects the launcher’s local interface data; it does not change purchases or delete game folders.

Confirm account, platform, and filters
- Sign in to the account that originally purchased or claimed the game. If you first used an external sign-in provider, use that same method; creating a second Epic account can make a legitimate purchase appear absent.
- Check that the operating-system and platform version match the title you are seeking.
- In Library, uncheck the Installed filter, reset other filters, and refresh again.
- Check whether the Library is hidden and unhide it if necessary.
Check entitlement exceptions
Epic lists several reasons a title may legitimately be unavailable: a purchase was refunded, a code was revoked because it was fraudulent, the listing was a limited-time build, or the purchase was made as a gift for someone else. In those cases, changing the installation folder or buying an internal SSD will not restore access; the account owner or Epic support must resolve the entitlement.

GOG GALAXY can compare local files with copies on its servers and download replacements for discrepancies. Use this when the game is listed but will not launch, reports missing content, or appears damaged.
Verify and repair files
- Select the game in GOG GALAXY.
- Open its customization menu.
- Choose Manage installation, then Verify / Repair.
- Wait for the comparison and any replacement download to finish before starting the game.
Verification does not recreate files that were deleted outside the launcher unless GALAXY can obtain them from its servers. It also cannot fix an unplugged drive.
Point GALAXY to the correct installation folder
- Open the cogwheel Settings panel.
- Select Installing, updating.
- Review Games installation folder.
- Set it to the drive and folder that contain the existing GOG library. You can also review Temporary game update folder and Other downloads folder if updates are failing because a different disk is full or unavailable.
After changing the path, return to the game and run Verify / Repair. If GALAXY still offers Install, check that the selected folder is the library root rather than a parent directory containing unrelated files.

Protect your files and minimize download time
- Keep the original folder: never delete it merely because a button says Install.
- Record the path: write down the drive letter and full folder name before changing launcher settings.
- Check free space: Steam verification, Epic staging, and GOG repair may need temporary working space in addition to the game’s final size.
- Use one repair operation at a time: simultaneous verification or copying can lock files and produce misleading errors.
- Expect a small download: re-indexing confirms files but may retrieve manifests, updates, or damaged blocks.
- Do not confuse storage with entitlement: moving a game to an internal SSD cannot restore a refunded purchase, an account claim, or a hidden library item.
If a launcher repeatedly forgets a library after every restart, test the drive outside the launcher: confirm it appears in File Explorer, check that its drive letter is stable, and look for USB power or cable interruptions. Only after storage remains available should you spend time rebuilding launcher paths.
What to do after Windows is reinstalled
A Windows reinstall often leaves a second drive untouched while removing launcher databases and settings from the system drive. The game folders can therefore remain while the launcher reports Install. Re-add the existing Steam library, set GOG GALAXY’s Games installation folder, or follow Epic’s reinstall policy. Restore the launcher first, sign in to the correct account, and then point it at the preserved data. Do not format the game drive until every required title has either been recognized or backed up.
