If your mouse pointer moves slowly all the time, adjust pointer speed. If it stutters, freezes, or drops out, check power and the connection first: those symptoms point to different troubleshooting paths, and no single setting fixes every cause.
First decide what “lagging” looks like
Notice whether the pointer is consistently too slow or whether it pauses, jumps, or stops responding intermittently. A speed setting can change how far the pointer moves, but it will not diagnose a wireless dropout or a faulty cable. Work through the checks below in order, stopping when the problem is resolved.
Check power and the physical connection
- Wireless mouse: Turn it on and charge it or replace its batteries. A low battery can affect whether a Bluetooth device connects reliably. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance includes battery level among the possible connection issues.
- Wired USB mouse: Unplug and reconnect it, inspect the cable for damage, try a different USB port, and connect it directly to the PC rather than through a hub. These are Microsoft’s recommended checks for mouse problems in Windows (Microsoft Support).
- USB wireless receiver: Remove the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it. If possible, try another USB port and check the mouse’s battery or charge.
Troubleshoot a Bluetooth mouse that pauses or disconnects
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and the mouse is close to the computer. If the mouse needs pairing, put it into pairing mode. If it appears in Windows but will not connect, remove it from the device list and pair it again. Microsoft lists range, pairing, battery, drivers, services, and updates as possible Bluetooth connection factors.

- Remove and re-add the mouse. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, find the mouse, choose its removal option, then add it again from the same area. Labels can vary slightly between Windows versions.
- Restart Bluetooth or the PC. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or restart Windows, then try reconnecting.
- Run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooting flow. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter if it is available on your Windows version. Microsoft’s current steps are in its Bluetooth connection guide.
- Check the Bluetooth adapter driver if the connection remains unreliable. Use Device Manager or Windows Update to look for an adapter driver update. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, check the PC maker’s support page for the exact computer model. Microsoft also documents reinstalling the adapter and rolling back a driver if the issue began after a recent driver or Windows update: Update Bluetooth drivers in Windows.
These driver steps apply to the Bluetooth adapter; they are not a universal fix for a slow pointer or a failing mouse.

Adjust pointer speed only when movement is consistently too slow or fast
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and adjust Mouse pointer speed. If movement still feels imprecise, Microsoft also documents the Enhance pointer precision option. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Mouse and use the additional mouse options to find pointer controls. See Microsoft’s version-specific directions in Change mouse settings. Changing speed can alter pointer movement, but it does not resolve an intermittent connection.
Check whether an app or restart changes the symptom
If the cursor became slow while a demanding app was open, close that app and see whether movement improves. Restarting the PC can also help distinguish a temporary Windows issue from a persistent device problem. Microsoft includes app load and restarting among its suggestions for slow response on Surface mouse or keyboard devices; these observations are relevant to that guidance, not proof of a single cause for other mice. See Microsoft’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting page.

Test the mouse on another PC before replacing it
If the mouse does not respond, connect it to another PC and install its required driver if applicable. If it fails there too, Microsoft says replacement may be needed. If it works on the other PC, focus next on the original computer’s USB or Bluetooth connection, settings, and software rather than assuming the mouse is defective. This cross-PC check helps isolate the device; it does not identify which PC-side issue is responsible.
One Bluetooth behavior specific to Surface mice
Microsoft says Bluetooth devices covered by its Surface mouse guidance enter hibernation after 8–10 minutes of inactivity to extend battery life, and reconnecting can take several seconds. That figure is specific to the cited Surface guidance, not a general rule for every Bluetooth mouse.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Mouse settings remain available; the support change does not prevent you from trying the troubleshooting steps above.
