If your computer does not recognize a GoPro, first turn the camera on, reseat the USB cable at both ends, and try a different data-capable cable and USB port. If your model has a connection indicator, check whether it appears. If you need the footage now, remove the microSD card and use a compatible card reader; that avoids relying on the camera’s USB connection.
The exact connection behavior depends on the GoPro model and the computer. GoPro’s detailed recognition checklist applies specifically to MAX2, so treat it as a practical starting sequence—not a universal menu guide for every GoPro.
Start with the camera, cable, and USB port
Work through these checks in order. They address common connection problems before you change camera settings or reset anything.
- Identify your model and goal. Note the GoPro model and computer operating system, and decide whether you need to transfer files, charge the camera, or use it as a webcam. Instructions and connection behavior can differ by model and task.
- Power on before connecting. GoPro’s MAX2 recognition checklist says to turn the camera on before plugging it into the computer. On MAX2, look for the USB symbol on the rear LCD as an indication that the camera has connected.
- Reseat the connection. Unplug the cable from both the camera and computer, then reconnect both ends securely.
- Try another cable and port. Use a cable compatible with your camera and computer that supports data transfer; a cable that only charges may not transfer files. Connect directly to a different USB port rather than reusing the suspect port.
- Restart and isolate the computer-side issue. Restart the computer, then reconnect the camera. Test another device with the same cable and USB ports. If the camera still is not recognized, try another computer and check whether the computer’s USB port drivers are current.
GoPro lists a manual update and factory reset as later checks for MAX2. Before either, consult support instructions for your exact model; do not assume MAX2 menus or procedures apply to another GoPro.

If the camera connects but files do not appear
A connection indicator does not necessarily mean the computer will display files in the way you expect. Follow the transfer method documented for your camera. For example, the HERO7 White manual describes connecting with the included USB-C cable, powering on the camera, and following the Quik app’s on-screen instructions. The HERO4 Black manual describes connecting with the included cable and copying files. These are model-specific, older instructions, not confirmation of the current workflow for every GoPro or computer operating system.
Transfer footage with a microSD card reader
If the computer will not recognize the camera—or you need to retrieve footage without troubleshooting USB—remove the microSD card and read it with a compatible card reader or adapter. GoPro’s HERO4 Black and HERO7 White manuals document card readers as an alternative for transferring files. Check that the reader supports your card and that its connector fits an available computer port; if needed, use a compatible adapter.

- Turn off the camera and remove the microSD card according to your model’s instructions.
- Insert the card into a compatible reader or adapter, then connect the reader to the computer or insert the adapter into a compatible SD slot.
- Open the card on the computer and copy the footage you need to a folder on the computer.
This method bypasses recognition of the camera, but it cannot recover files from a damaged or unreadable card.
Do not format the card before backing up files
GoPro’s MAX2 checklist includes testing the card in a computer card adapter. If the card is recognized, GoPro’s sequence is to download any files you can, format the card, then reinsert it, power on the camera, and reconnect. Formatting erases the card, so copy every recoverable file you want to keep before proceeding. If the computer’s reader does not recognize the card, GoPro directs users to contact the card manufacturer for troubleshooting.

When to move beyond basic checks
If another cable, port, and computer do not help, the issue may require model-specific support rather than more trial and error. Use GoPro’s support instructions for your exact camera before attempting a manual update or factory reset, since those steps can vary by model. GoPro’s MAX2 checklist is dated September 23, 2025 and is specifically for MAX2; the HERO4 Black and HERO7 White transfer instructions are from older manuals.
