First disconnect the controller. If the pointer stops moving, the controller, its touchpad or its current input mode is involved; if the pointer keeps moving, check other paired input devices. Then reconnect it and open Android’s controller settings. A controller touchpad can intentionally create an on-screen pointer, while an app may interpret controller input differently from the Android home screen. There is no single fix for every phone, Android version, controller and game, so the fastest solution is to identify where the movement occurs and isolate the hardware or app responsible.

What the symptom can mean

“The controller moves the mouse pointer” can describe several different behaviors. A cursor may move whenever a thumb rests on a touchpad, drift when no control is being touched, respond only inside one game, or move across the entire Android interface. Those observations point to different troubleshooting paths.

  • Movement on the home screen and in several apps: Android is receiving pointer input while the controller is connected, or another paired input device is active.
  • Movement only when a controller touchpad is touched: this may be normal. Android Developers documents that “Touching the touchpad generates an on-screen mouse pointer, allowing for intuitive mouse-like navigation.”
  • Movement only in one game: the game may be handling controller or pointer events differently from Android itself. The official Android material does not identify a universal setting that repairs every app.
  • Movement with no contact on the controller: test the controller in isolation first, then inspect its input mode and the Android device’s other connected inputs.

Do not assume that a visible pointer proves the analog stick is defective. Android can receive different input categories, including absolute pointer coordinates and relative motion captured by an app. A touchpad and a conventional mouse can therefore produce different event data even though both appear as a pointer.

Start with a controlled diagnosis

Record the conditions before changing settings. The details determine whether the remedy belongs in Android, the controller, or the affected app.

Write down the four essential details

  • The controller make and model, including any revision or special edition marking.
  • The Android phone, tablet or TV model and its Android version.
  • The exact game or app in which the pointer moves.
  • Whether the pointer also moves on the Android home screen, in Settings and in another app.

Also note the connection type. Android Help states that a game controller can connect through a compatible cable or Bluetooth. Wired and wireless connections may expose different settings or modes, so record which one you are using.

Perform the disconnect test

  1. Leave the pointer visible and stop touching the controller.
  2. Disconnect the controller, or turn it off if it is connected wirelessly.
  3. Watch the home screen or another non-game screen for several seconds.
  4. Reconnect the same controller and check whether the movement returns.

If the movement stops while the controller is disconnected and returns after reconnection, the controller connection is relevant. That does not yet prove a failed component: a touchpad, a mode switch or an app’s interpretation of the input can all be responsible. If movement continues without the controller, inspect every other paired or attached input device before changing controller settings.

Check for another source of pointer input

Temporarily account for a separate mouse, touchpad, air mouse, keyboard with a pointing feature, accessibility device or another paired controller. The diagnostic purpose is simply to remove competing inputs one at a time. Do not infer that any one of these devices is the cause until the pointer behavior changes when it is disconnected.

Open Android’s controller settings

Android Help documents different paths for wired and wireless controllers. Manufacturers can rename, move or omit menu items, and the available options vary by Android build.

For a wired controller

  1. Connect the controller with a compatible cable.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose System.
  4. Open Game controllers.
  5. Review the controller entry and any available button or joystick options.

For a Bluetooth controller

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Connected devices.
  3. Select the controller from the connected-device list.
  4. Open or review its Game Controller settings.

Android Help notes that available settings can include swapping buttons or joysticks. If your device exposes a mapping or swap option, verify that the left and right sticks have not been exchanged and that no stick is assigned to pointer navigation. A setting shown on one device may not exist on another; its absence is not evidence that the controller is incompatible.

Use the controller’s manual for pairing and mode-switching instructions. Android’s general connection instructions do not define the button sequence for every controller, and pressing an undocumented combination can change the device’s operating mode rather than repair the pointer.

Determine whether a touchpad is intentionally creating the pointer

Some controllers include a touch-sensitive surface. Android Developers explicitly describes touchpad behavior that generates an on-screen mouse pointer. That is expected input for a controller design with a touchpad, although it does not establish that the touchpad explains every instance of unwanted movement.

Test the touchpad separately

  1. Place the controller on a stable surface so your hands do not brush the controls.
  2. Reconnect it and observe the pointer without touching the touchpad.
  3. Touch only the touchpad and move one finger slowly.
  4. Lift your finger, then test the sticks without touching the touchpad.

If pointer movement begins only with touchpad contact, avoid resting a thumb or palm on that surface. Look in the controller’s own manual for a touchpad-disable or mode option; Android’s generic controller page does not promise such a switch. If the pointer moves while the touchpad is untouched, continue with the cross-app and alternate-controller tests instead of treating normal touchpad output as a defect.

Separate Android-wide behavior from an app-specific problem

Test the same controller in three places: the Android home screen, a system screen such as Settings, and a second app or game. Keep the connection method and controller mode unchanged while testing.

Observation What it establishes Next action
Pointer moves on the home screen and in more than one app The behavior is not confined to the original game. Inspect touchpad contact, controller mode, Android controller settings and other paired inputs.
Pointer appears only when the touchpad is touched The controller is producing documented touchpad pointer input. Change how you hold the controller or use a documented controller mode option, if one exists.
Pointer moves only in one game The symptom is app-specific under this test. Check that game’s input settings and support material; Android’s general documentation does not provide a universal game-level repair.
Pointer continues with the controller disconnected The controller is not the only active input source. Disconnect other mice, touchpads, air mice, accessibility devices or paired controllers one at a time.
Pointer returns across apps only with this controller connected The controller or its compatibility with this Android build is implicated. Check the controller manual for input modes and test a known-compatible controller before purchasing a replacement.

This test does not diagnose the internal component. It identifies the scope of the symptom so that you do not apply a game-only workaround to an Android-wide input problem, or replace hardware when only one app is interpreting events unusually.

Understand why the same input can behave differently

Android supports more than one kind of pointer data. A pointer can report an absolute position, while relative input reports movement from the previous position. Android’s developer documentation also describes pointer capture: an app can capture pointer movement, and touchpad input under capture is exposed in touchpad coordinate space. The app, rather than the system alone, decides how to handle those events.

This explains why a controller can appear normal in the launcher but move a pointer unexpectedly inside a game. The game may be reading a touchpad or mouse source, applying pointer capture, or mapping controller events to a navigation action. The available documentation does not establish one universal preference that forces every app to treat every controller identically.

Android’s platform compatibility documents specify HID mapping requirements for game controllers. Those platform-level requirements do not guarantee identical behavior across every controller, phone, tablet, TV build or game. A controller can satisfy the general mapping rules while still exposing a mode or event pattern that a particular app handles poorly.

Correct the common configuration causes

Check for swapped or remapped controls

In the Android controller page for the connected device, inspect any button- or joystick-swap controls. Restore the intended left-stick and right-stick assignments if they have been changed. Then test in the same screen where the pointer moved. If the settings page offers no mapping controls, do not assume a hidden universal setting exists; use the controller manual and the affected app’s input options.

Check the controller’s physical mode switch

Some controllers can present different input modes. Use only the mode names and switch sequence documented for your model. After changing a mode, disconnect and reconnect according to the manual, then repeat the home-screen and second-app test. Record which mode produces the pointer so you can return to a known working configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check how you hold the controller

A thumb, palm, case edge or protective film can touch a capacitive surface. Repeat the test with the controller resting on a table and your hands away from the touchpad. This simple check distinguishes accidental contact from pointer drift that occurs without physical contact.

When the problem is limited to one game

If Android’s home screen and another app remain stable but one game moves the pointer, start inside that game. Look for separate options for controller input, mouse or pointer input, touchpad actions, navigation mode and control remapping. The exact labels and availability depend on the game; no universal Android label can be supplied for every title.

  • Compare the game’s behavior with the controller disconnected. If the pointer disappears, the game is reacting to an input source exposed by the controller.
  • Check whether the game has a controller profile or a way to disable mouse-style navigation.
  • Use the game publisher’s support channel for that title if its settings do not explain the behavior.
  • Keep the controller model, Android version, connection type and reproduction steps in the report. Those details are more useful than describing the symptom only as “cursor drift.”

Do not change system-wide mappings to solve a symptom that exists only in one game. A global swap can make the original game appear fixed while breaking controls elsewhere.

When the problem affects every app

Cross-app movement that disappears when this controller is disconnected points to a controller-specific mode, touchpad signal or compatibility issue. Verify the behavior once more with no touchpad contact and with any alternate controller mode documented by the manufacturer. Then test the same controller on another compatible Android device if one is available to you. This is a comparison test, not proof that either device is defective: different Android builds can expose or interpret the same HID input differently.

If the pointer continues across apps only with this controller and no documented setting changes it, treat replacement as a conditional option rather than the first fix. Before buying anything, compare potential controllers on the features that matter to this symptom:

Comparison point Why it matters What to verify
Android compatibility General HID support does not ensure identical behavior on every Android build. Look for explicit Android support and the device/version requirements stated by the manufacturer.
Connection method Wired and Bluetooth paths expose different pairing and settings flows. Choose the connection type your device supports reliably and follow the controller’s pairing instructions.
Touchpad included A touchpad can intentionally generate a pointer. Confirm whether the model has a touchpad and whether its manual documents a disable or alternate mode.
Dedicated mode switch A documented mode may change how Android receives the controls. Check the exact switch positions or button sequence for the model before purchase.

No particular controller model is established as a guaranteed fix. A compatible replacement is reasonable only after the isolation tests implicate the original controller or its compatibility with your Android device.

Use the evidence to choose the next step

  • Disconnecting the controller does not stop movement: find and disconnect other pointing devices before changing controller settings.
  • Only touchpad contact moves the pointer: treat it as expected touchpad behavior; avoid contact or use a documented controller option.
  • One game is affected: investigate that game’s input handling and support documentation.
  • Every app is affected, but only with one controller: inspect mappings and modes, then test a known-compatible controller before replacement.
  • Behavior differs between Android devices: record both Android versions and device models; platform compatibility requirements do not make every build behave identically.

Keep a short record of each test: controller connected or disconnected, touchpad touched or untouched, app used, connection type and result. That record prevents circular troubleshooting and gives the app or controller manufacturer reproducible information.

What not to conclude

  • Do not conclude that every pointer movement is analog-stick drift; a touchpad can create a pointer by design.
  • Do not conclude that a controller is faulty because one game handles its events differently from the launcher.
  • Do not conclude that Android has one hidden setting that disables all controller-generated pointers. The documented settings and available labels vary by device and Android version.
  • Do not buy a replacement solely because a pointer appeared once. First repeat the disconnect, touchpad and cross-app tests.

Information to provide when asking for support

Support staff can investigate more effectively when the report includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Controller make, model and hardware revision if listed.
  • Android device model and Android version.
  • Wired or Bluetooth connection.
  • Whether the controller has a touchpad.
  • Whether movement occurs on the home screen, in Settings, in one game or in several apps.
  • Whether the movement stops immediately after disconnecting the controller.
  • Whether another mouse, touchpad, air mouse, accessibility device or controller is connected.
  • The result after checking Android’s Game controllers page and any documented controller mode.

These facts distinguish an Android-wide input issue from an app-specific mapping problem without assuming a cause that has not been tested.
