If your Samsung Galaxy Tab is frozen, press and hold Power and Volume down together for more than seven seconds, until it reboots. The exact hold time can vary by model and software. If the screen still will not respond, first rule out a touch or accessory problem, then use the steps below to diagnose recurring freezes without jumping straight to a data-erasing reset.
First, identify what is frozen
“Frozen” can describe different problems: the touchscreen may not register taps, one app may have stopped responding, or the whole tablet may refuse to turn off or start. The steps overlap, but an unresponsive app is not necessarily a failed screen or a tablet that cannot power on.
Check the screen and accessories
Before restarting, remove the case, screen protector, or other accessory if it could press against the display. Wipe the screen and make sure it is clean and dry. Samsung notes that a slow or unresponsive screen can be associated with an app or physical screen damage, and that accessories touching the display may interfere with it. - Press and hold the Power button and Volume down button at the same time.
- Keep holding them for more than seven seconds, until the tablet reboots. Samsung US guidance gives a typical hold of 7–10 seconds; the timing can differ by model.
- If that combination does not work, consult the instructions for your exact tablet model. Samsung troubleshooting guidance for some cases allows holding the buttons for longer—up to 60 seconds—before shutdown.
Samsung UK’s instruction is to hold Power and Volume down simultaneously for more than seven seconds until the device reboots. Samsung UK support and Samsung US support describe this force-restart approach. A force restart is different from a factory reset: the restart is the initial recovery step, while a factory data reset erases the device.

If the tablet keeps freezing after it restarts
Recurring freezes call for software and storage checks rather than repeated resets. If the tablet is usable, work through these steps:
- Install available software updates. Samsung recommends checking for updates as part of troubleshooting unresponsive devices. Menu wording and availability can vary by model and software version.
- Check storage and memory. Free space or close apps if storage or memory is limited.
- Try Safe mode. Safe mode helps determine whether a downloaded app may be involved. If the tablet works normally in Safe mode, remove apps you downloaded or updated shortly before the freezes began. Uninstall one at a time, then restart and check whether the problem returns.
Samsung’s screen troubleshooting guidance and unresponsive-device troubleshooting recommend checking updates, storage or memory, and using Safe mode to investigate app-related problems.

Use a factory reset only as a later step
A factory data reset is not another kind of restart. It restores original settings and completely erases data on the device. Back up important data first, and consider it only if less disruptive software troubleshooting has not resolved persistent unresponsiveness. Reset menu names and availability vary. Samsung’s Singapore guidance on frozen Galaxy screens and UK troubleshooting guidance both address reset as a later option and advise backing up beforehand.

If the battery may be the reason the tablet will not power on, Samsung UK suggests allowing it to run down, charging the device for 30 minutes, and then trying to turn it on. This is a conditional power check, not a general fix for a touchscreen that will not register input. Follow the guidance for your exact model and use a compatible charging setup. Samsung UK’s troubleshooting steps describe this option.

When to seek service
Contact Samsung support or an authorized repair provider if the tablet remains unresponsive after troubleshooting, freezes continue after software checks, or the screen has visible physical damage. Samsung recommends professional inspection when damage may be involved. Button combinations, menus, and available service routes vary by model and country; use support guidance for your specific Galaxy Tab rather than assuming every model has the same recovery instructions.
