If your DVD drive is missing from File Explorer in Windows 11 or Windows 10, check whether Device Manager detects it and reports an error. Microsoft says this symptom usually points to a driver or configuration problem, though the status code is a clue rather than a complete diagnosis. Start with BIOS and chipset checks, then work through the driver steps below; leave registry changes for last.
Check whether Windows detects the drive

Right-click Start and select Device Manager.

Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. If the drive appears with a yellow exclamation mark, right-click it, select Properties, and read the Device status field on the General tab.

Note any error code before changing settings. Microsoft lists codes 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41 as examples associated with configuration information, a driver that cannot load or is disabled, or Windows loading a driver but not finding the hardware. If the drive is absent from both File Explorer and Device Manager, the steps that uninstall an entry may not be available. Check whether it is enabled in BIOS and consult the computer or drive manufacturer if Windows still does not detect it.

Try the lower-risk checks first
Verify BIOS and chipset drivers
Check that the optical drive is enabled in BIOS. BIOS menus and labels differ among computers, so use the computer maker’s instructions if you are unsure how to find the setting. If the drive came with the computer, ask its manufacturer whether the chipset drivers are current; if you bought the drive separately, check with its manufacturer.
Update or reinstall the DVD/CD-ROM driver
Check the computer or drive manufacturer’s website for an appropriate driver update. If the drive appears in Device Manager, Microsoft’s reinstall procedure is to uninstall that device and restart Windows:

In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Right-click the affected drive and select Uninstall device (the label may vary by Windows version).

Restart the computer. Microsoft says Windows automatically reinstalls the driver after restart.
Use the manufacturer’s site rather than third-party driver download sites.
If the driver reinstall does not help
Microsoft also describes reinstalling IDE/ATAPI controller entries. Device Manager layouts can vary, so proceed only if the relevant entries are present and you are comfortable identifying them.

In Device Manager, open View and select Show hidden devices.

Look for the listed ATA channel or controller entries described in Microsoft’s instructions, then uninstall those entries.

Restart Windows so it can reinstall the drivers.
For the exact controller guidance, follow the applicable steps in Microsoft’s troubleshooting article. Do not remove unrelated devices.

Use registry changes only as an advanced option
Microsoft’s registry-filter method involves deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values under the CD/DVD class registry key. Incorrect registry edits can cause serious problems, and Microsoft warns that CD/DVD recording software may stop working correctly afterward. This is not a routine first step.

Back up the registry before making any change, as Microsoft instructs.

Read Microsoft’s registry-filter instructions and cautions before considering this change.
When to contact the manufacturer
Microsoft notes that these steps do not resolve every case and that help from the hardware manufacturer may be needed. Contact the computer maker for a built-in drive or the drive maker for a separately purchased one, especially if BIOS does not show the drive or Windows continues to report that it cannot find the hardware.
A Windows upgrade, installing or uninstalling CD/DVD recording software, or uninstalling Microsoft Digital Image may have preceded the problem, according to Microsoft. These events provide useful context for support but do not prove what caused the drive to disappear.
If you need to read discs while the built-in drive remains unavailable, an external USB DVD drive may be an alternative, not a repair for the missing drive. Check that any external drive is compatible with your computer before relying on it.
