A black shadow on an LCD TV can come from the video source, a connection, a surface mark, or an issue within the screen; the appearance alone cannot identify which. Check whether it stays in the same place on the TV’s own menu and on other inputs before trying any fix. If it persists across menus and sources, document it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than pressing on the screen or attempting a parts replacement.
First check whether the shadow is on the TV or in the picture
Open the TV’s Home or Settings menu, then compare the affected area while viewing several types of content: another app or channel, a different input, and, if available, a built-in Picture Test or other self-diagnostic. A solid-color image can also make a fixed mark easier to see. Menu names and test steps vary by model and software, so use the instructions for your set.
- Only one video, app, channel, or connected device: the source or signal path is a more likely place to investigate first than the screen itself.
- The same mark appears over the TV menu and across different sources: the issue is more consistent with something integrated into the TV. That does not identify a particular failed component.
- It appears mainly on a blank screen or in a dark room: it may be uneven LCD brightness or clouding, which can be model-dependent and is not necessarily the same fault as a sharply defined black patch.
Manufacturers use different thresholds and test procedures. For example, Samsung’s guidance says to contact support if a black area cuts into the TV menu; if the menu displays fully, it proceeds to checks of HDMI devices and the Picture Test. Samsung’s screen troubleshooting steps apply according to the model’s available features.

Try these safe checks in order
- Restart the TV. TCL recommends unplugging the set for at least 60 seconds, then reconnecting it. Once it starts, check the same menu, source, or test image again. TCL’s troubleshooting guidance gives this power-cycle step.
- If the shadow is limited to an external source, check the connection. Reseat the HDMI cable, try another HDMI port, and test a different connected device if available. Samsung’s HDMI cable test is model-dependent and its instructions are designed for cables under 2 m; do not assume the test is available on every TV.
- Check for a surface mark without applying pressure. Turn off the TV and gently wipe the area with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not press, rub, tap, or massage the screen, and avoid solvents, alcohol, paper towels, or harsh cleaners. A cloth is only for checking or removing surface debris; it will not repair an internal screen defect. TCL specifically warns against pressure on the display.
- Repeat the comparison. Reopen the menu and test another app or input, ideally against more than one background. If the mark remains fixed in the same position after the restart, stop troubleshooting as though it were a source problem and arrange model-specific support.
What the pattern can—and cannot—tell you
A mark confined to one source
If the TV menu and other content look normal, the problem may be in the video, app, channel, connected device, cable, or input. Check the same content on another source where possible, then change one connection at a time. A shadow that moves or disappears when the source changes is less consistent with a fixed screen mark. Sony and TCL both recommend comparing menu and source content as part of picture troubleshooting: Sony’s picture troubleshooting guidance and TCL’s dot and pixel guidance.

A persistent dark area across menus and inputs
A mark that stays in the same place on the TV’s own menu, a test screen, and different inputs points toward a TV-integrated screen concern. It does not prove that the panel, backlight, or any particular board has failed. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal cause or a reliable at-home repair for this symptom. Ask the manufacturer or authorized service provider to assess the exact model rather than buying parts based on appearance alone.
Cloudy or uneven brightness visible mainly in darkness
Some LCD TVs show uneven brightness, cloudy areas, or bright spots most clearly in a dark room or on a blank image. Sony says this can be normal for applicable models; that guidance concerns cloudy white shadows or bright spots and should not be applied automatically to every black patch. If the effect is bothersome, Sony suggests model-dependent adjustments such as reducing the backlight, enabling the light sensor, or changing power-saving settings. Small dots or pixel-like marks
A small dot is not necessarily the same issue as a broad shadow. LG USA Support states that approximately 1 PPM (one in a million) of inactive pixels may sometimes appear as fine dots without affecting product performance or reliability. This is LG’s general support statement, not a rule for all TV brands, a universal acceptable-pixel allowance, or a warranty decision. LG’s inactive-pixel guidance is dated July 31, 2025.

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the mark remains fixed on the TV menu and multiple sources after a restart, grows, or interferes with viewing. If the TV is under warranty, check the warranty terms and contact the manufacturer before opening the set or arranging an independent repair. A remote description or photo cannot establish which internal part is at fault, and disassembly may create safety risks or affect warranty coverage.

Before contacting support, gather:
- The TV model and serial number.
- When you first noticed the shadow and whether it is changing.
- Whether it appears on the Home or Settings menu, built-in test, apps, and each input you checked.
- Photos showing the mark on more than one background, taken without applying pressure to the display.
- Whether you have restarted the set and, if relevant, checked another cable, port, or connected device.
These details help support distinguish a source-specific symptom from one that persists across the TV’s own display. TCL also recommends recording the model, serial number, symptom timing, and photos before seeking assistance.
