A small, custom-fit 3D print can be a practical fix for a recurring household nuisance—but the five projects below are examples, not a verified list of the prints in the How-To Geek article named in the original headline. The available listing identifies that article but does not reveal its full text. A separate Fast3DPrinters article describes these five ideas, so they’re useful starting points for deciding whether a print could help in your home.
Before printing, check what the fix needs to do
These projects differ in fit, exposure, and the forces they must handle. Measure the actual object or space rather than relying on a model’s stated dimensions. A digital caliper may help with small parts, but it is a possible tool—not a demonstrated requirement for these projects.
- Fit: A shim, plug, or holder that is even slightly the wrong size may not work as intended.
- Conditions: Water, vinegar, heat, and prolonged compression can affect whether a particular material and design are suitable.
- Loads and mounting: A printed part that supports weight needs an appropriate design and secure installation. Do not assume a household print is safe for every load.

Five small-print ideas for everyday annoyances
1. Door-hinge shims for a door that catches
A thin shim placed at a hinge can change the door’s position and may help when it catches because of its alignment. The important detail is thickness: measure the gap and test the fit rather than assuming a downloaded model matches your hinge. The related article suggests PLA for its shim example, but suitability depends on the design, print orientation, conditions, and forces on the part.

2. Custom wall plugs for irregular masonry holes
A plug designed around an irregular hole may fit where a standard size does not. Measure the hole and consider what the fastener will support before making or using one. Fast3DPrinters discusses PLA for this application while also noting that sustained compression can lead to long-term creep. That caveat matters: a close fit today does not establish that a printed plug will remain secure indefinitely or suit a load-bearing installation.
3. A cap to hold vinegar against a limescale-covered faucet aerator
A small cap can hold vinegar against an aerator to help address limescale without keeping the entire faucet submerged. The cap must fit the faucet and retain the liquid without leaking. The related article recommends PETG for its vinegar-exposed example; that is a source-specific suggestion, not a guarantee of compatibility for every filament, print, or exposure. Check the material and design for your intended use, and keep the liquid away from surfaces it could damage.

4. A notched cylinder to keep rubber bands together
A small notched cylinder provides a simple place to gather rubber bands instead of leaving them loose in a drawer. This is a low-load organizer, but the notch still needs to suit the size and quantity of bands you use. The source describes a cylinder-style design; it does not establish a particular model, dimension, or required material.
5. A wall-mounted holder for pot lids
A holder can move pot lids out of a cabinet pile and onto a wall or cabinet surface. Measure the lids and the available space before choosing dimensions, and account for the weight the holder will carry. Fast3DPrinters suggests PLA for its example and cautions that screws should not protrude through the cabinet door. Use mounting hardware appropriate to the surface and load; a printed holder’s suitability cannot be inferred from the material alone.

How to choose a project and make it fit
- Identify the actual failure: Check whether the nuisance comes from alignment, an unusual opening, residue, clutter, or a storage problem. A print is useful only if it addresses that cause.
- Measure the object and its surroundings: Record the dimensions that determine fit, including clearance and any relevant mounting points. A caliper can be useful for small measurements, but a ruler or other suitable measuring method may be enough for larger spaces.
- Check the operating conditions: Note whether the part will contact liquid, encounter heat, remain under compression, or carry weight. Choose a design and material for those conditions instead of treating PLA or PETG as universally suitable.
- Test fit before relying on it: Verify that the part sits correctly and does not interfere with the door, faucet, cabinet, or fastener. For mounts and plugs, do not put a printed part into service as a support until its fit, installation, and load are appropriate.
For a hinge-shim model, the related article points readers toward MakerWorld, but it does not establish that a listed model will match every hinge. Treat any model as a starting point and verify its dimensions before printing.
