Router changes can improve the Wi-Fi speed your devices receive, but they cannot raise the speed limit of your internet service. Before paying for a lower plan, compare wired and Wi-Fi performance, improve coverage, and check whether your household can handle the lower tier during its busiest periods.

First, find out whether the slowdown is Wi-Fi or broadband

Run speed tests on the same device, in the same location, and at roughly the same time so the results are comparable. If possible, connect a computer by Ethernet to your router and compare that result with Wi-Fi. A direct connection to the modem can also help isolate the router, but follow your provider’s setup instructions; some connections require the router to remain in place.

If the wired result is close to the speed of your subscribed plan but Wi-Fi is much slower, focus on signal, interference, the device’s Wi-Fi capability, or router settings. If wired and wireless results are both low, check for a service issue or contact your provider. The FCC broadband guide recommends checking your plan and contacting your internet provider when speeds are lower than expected. Ofcom also explains that Ethernet can provide a better connection and should support the broadband speed: Improving your Wi-Fi experience.

Five router changes worth testing

1. Move the router into the open

Place the router in a central, open position rather than hiding it in a cabinet, tucking it into a corner, or putting it behind large obstacles. Test from the rooms and spots where you actually use Wi-Fi; a strong result beside the router does not tell you how well it reaches a distant room. Walls, distance, and other barriers can weaken the signal. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Google’s advice on improving Wi-Fi performance.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

2. Match the Wi-Fi band to the device and location

Use 5 GHz for a nearby device that needs higher throughput; its useful range is generally shorter than 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther and can suit distant devices or equipment that does not support newer bands. A 6 GHz connection is an option only when both the router and client device support it, and it has shorter range. Actual results depend on the equipment and layout. Microsoft summarizes band and home-layout considerations in Wi-Fi and your home layout; Google covers device support and interference in its Nest Wifi performance guidance.

3. Change channels only if nearby networks are causing congestion

Check the router’s Wi-Fi settings or use a local Wi-Fi analyzer to see whether nearby networks are crowded on the same channel. If you adjust a 2.4 GHz network manually, Microsoft recommends evaluating channels 1, 6, and 11, which do not overlap in its guidance. There is no channel that is best in every home: choose based on local signal strength and congestion, or leave automatic selection enabled if it works well. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance explains the channel choice.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

4. Check whether other household traffic is competing for capacity

When Wi-Fi slows down, temporarily pause a large download or high-bandwidth stream and repeat the test. If performance improves, simultaneous activity may be contributing to the slowdown. Wi-Fi capacity is shared across active devices, but disconnecting an idle device does not increase the broadband speed ceiling supplied by your provider. Ofcom discusses connected-device load and Wi-Fi performance in its Wi-Fi guide.

5. Update firmware and test settings carefully

Check the router maker’s instructions for firmware updates, and enable automatic updates if the router supports them. Apple recommends automatic software and firmware updates where possible in its recommended router settings. If you use a TP-Link router and still have a slowdown, TP-Link suggests a reversible diagnostic test with QoS and parental controls disabled; this is model-specific advice, not a universal setting to turn off. Follow TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting steps for the relevant model, and restore settings if the test makes no difference or disrupts a feature you need.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

When a coverage fix is not the same as a speed fix

If wired speeds are good but one area of the home has weak Wi-Fi, try relocating the router or using a wired connection for a stationary device. An extender or mesh system may help reach a dead zone, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade: the result depends on the building and connection, and Ofcom warns that extenders can affect data speeds and responsiveness. Its Wi-Fi guide describes these coverage options and trade-offs.

Also check whether the router and the device being tested can support the speed of your broadband plan. A device with older Wi-Fi hardware, or a router whose capabilities are below the subscribed service, can limit the result even when the internet connection itself is working normally. The FCC’s broadband speed guide recommends checking router capability.

How to decide whether a lower plan will work

Do not treat a faster Wi-Fi test near the router as proof that a lower broadband tier will serve the whole household. First establish the wired speed, then assess actual use over a representative period, including the busiest times. Consider how many people stream, download, or make video calls at once, whether anyone needs substantial upload capacity, and whether the plan has limits or fees.

There is no universal safe downgrade threshold in the cited guidance. Compare the lower tier’s stated speeds and terms with your household’s simultaneous needs, and confirm the provider’s price and any plan conditions before changing service. Router tweaks can help devices use the connection more effectively; they cannot make a lower plan deliver more broadband capacity than it includes.
