Who should choose it
- Choose it if you have never played an official FNaF game.
- Choose it if you want the clearest explanation of the original survival loop rather than a broad sampler.

The original is not necessarily the best fit for someone whose priority is variety or physical VR immersion. Those preferences point toward Help Wanted, but starting with the 2014 game gives its later interpretations more context.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is described on Steam as “a collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe.” Steel Wool Studios developed it, ScottGames published it, and the listed release date is May 28, 2019.
That collection format changes the onboarding experience. Rather than spending your first sessions inside one tightly defined night-survival structure, you sample multiple scenarios. Classic material shows where the series came from, while original mini-games demonstrate how the same universe can support different tasks and presentations. It is therefore a gateway for players who want breadth immediately.
VR is optional
A VR headset is not required. The game supports flat, non-VR play as well as VR, so you can begin on a conventional screen and move to a headset later if you already own compatible hardware. Do not treat VR as a purchase prerequisite: the flat mode is an intended way to play, not a trial version.

Who should start here
- Start with Help Wanted if you want to sample several kinds of FNaF scenario in one release.
- Start here if you are interested in VR but want the option to play without buying a headset.
- Choose it if a modern presentation matters more to you than following the most concentrated introduction.
If you are completely new and want to understand the original camera-and-resource rhythm with the least distraction, play the 2014 game first and use Help Wanted second. If variety is your main criterion, reversing those two is reasonable.
Where Security Breach fits
It is the exploration-first option
Steam lists Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach as a ScottGames release dated December 16, 2021. It represents a later, free-roam-oriented form of FNaF, with a larger environment and a stronger emphasis on exploration than the original’s contained night-survival setup.
That scale is the reason to choose it, and also the reason it is not the clearest tutorial. A newcomer who starts with Security Breach encounters the series through its broader presentation rather than through the focused loop that established the franchise. Playing one classic entry first gives you a reference point for understanding what changed.
Play Ruin after the base game
Steel Wool identifies Ruin as downloadable content for the Security Breach base game. Treat it as an extension of that setting, not as a substitute for the original release. The practical order is Security Breach first, then Ruin, so that the downloadable chapter follows the game it is designed to accompany.

Who should choose Security Breach early
- Choose it after a classic entry if exploring a larger environment is more important to you than mastering the original format.
- Choose it if you already know you prefer free-roam horror to a tightly contained survival scenario.
- Do not make it your first purchase solely because it is newer; its strengths are different rather than universally better.
What makes Secret of the Mimic different
The newest major standalone setting
Steel Wool’s announcement places Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic in the abandoned Murray’s Costume Manor. Its central threat is the Mimic, described as a prototype endoskeleton that can adapt to different costumes and become any character, including what you fear most.
The game is presented as first-person exploration and horror. The Steam listing includes optional VR support, so it belongs in the same hardware conversation as Help Wanted, but its setting and premise are distinct. The adaptive-costume concept gives the game its own identity rather than simply reproducing the original office-and-camera structure.
Release timing and platforms
The initial release was June 13, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steel Wool later announced Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch launches beginning December 16, 2025. Platform availability can vary by edition and storefront, so check the listing for the system you plan to use.

Is it suitable for a first-time player?
It can be a first game in the narrow sense that it is a standalone presentation, but it is not the strongest first lesson in what defines the series. Play at least one classic entry before it if you want the newer setting and mechanics to have context. Pick it immediately only when the Mimic premise and first-person exploration are more compelling to you than learning the franchise in release order.

Learning the original survival loop
The 2014 original is the direct choice. Its focused night-survival format puts camera use, timing and resource management at the center. Help Wanted contains classic scenarios, but its mini-game structure divides attention among several experiences. First-ever player
- Start with Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014).
- Continue through Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 4.
