Mobile gaming brings a range of play styles together across different games—not inside one title. These five examples illustrate distinct ways to spend time on a phone, from a quick puzzle break to competitive matches or a long-running role-playing world. They are a practical comparison, not a formal classification of all players.
Five mobile games for five different routines
The useful question is not which game is best for everyone, but what kind of session and commitment you want. The examples below span repeatable puzzles, designed levels, long-term solo progression, online competition, and open-world exploration.
Candy Crush Saga: repeatable puzzle breaks
Match-three levels make this a fit for short, repeatable sessions. Events and leaderboards provide reasons to return, while the game is free to download with advertising and optional in-app purchases. Stardew Valley: a world to revisit
Farming, fishing, exploration, relationships, and quests offer a sustained solo routine. The Google Play listing describes more than 50 hours of gameplay, along with auto-save, touch controls, virtual joystick options, and external-controller support. Call of Duty: Mobile: competitive matches
Multiplayer and battle royale modes offer match-based play, with ranked and seasonal content for players seeking competition and ongoing goals. Activision lists a minimum of 2 GB RAM and Android 6.0 or later, or 2 GB RAM and iOS 15.0 or later. It also documents controller support in Multiplayer and Battle Royale; support is mode-specific, not a guarantee for every part of the game. Genshin Impact: open-world exploration and progression
This action RPG combines exploration, quests, combat, character collection, and ongoing progression. It asks more of a phone’s storage than the other examples with published figures here: HoYoverse lists 40 GB of available storage as a mobile minimum and 60 GB as recommended, and warns that updates can increase storage needs. HoYoverse also says mobile controller support is not currently available. Check HoYoverse’s device requirements and controller-support information before choosing it.
Compare session length, commitment, controls, and competition
Use these distinctions to match a game to your routine rather than treating the examples as a ranking.

No. The five examples are an editorial grouping of games, not a research-backed set of five kinds of mobile gamers. A 2017 study by Holm and Koponen analyzed 700 written digital-game reviews and surveyed 1,717 players. It reported five game-dynamics preference categories—“assault,” “manage,” “journey,” “care,” and “coordinate”—as well as seven player types. The authors distinguish preferences for game dynamics from general motivations to play and player behavior. Those findings describe that study, not the mobile gaming market as a whole or fixed categories that every player must fit. Read the study in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.

Choose by the session you actually want
- For short, repeatable breaks: try a match-three loop such as Candy Crush Saga.
- For a contained puzzle experience: choose the designed levels of Monument Valley 2.
- For a world to return to over time: consider Stardew Valley or Genshin Impact, while accounting for their different gameplay and device demands.
- For competition and matches: Call of Duty: Mobile offers multiplayer and battle royale, with controller play documented for those modes.
- For physical controls: check support separately for each game. Stardew Valley lists external-controller support, Call of Duty: Mobile supports controllers in specified modes, and Genshin Impact mobile does not currently support controllers.
