Focus on a few fitness-tracker numbers you can interpret over time: activity, resting heart rate and sleep duration. Treat heart-rate variability (HRV) and branded recovery scores as personal context, not universal grades. Trackers estimate; their numbers can help you notice patterns and adjust habits, but they do not diagnose illness.

Which fitness tracker numbers matter most?

A useful tracker number is one that helps you make a reasonable decision and is measured consistently enough to show a trend. For most people, that means using the same device and routine to follow activity, resting heart rate and sleep. Workout heart rate can help you gauge effort, with more caution when movement or fit may affect the reading.

Steps and activity minutes are convenient indicators, not ground truth. A systematic review of commercially available wearables found that step-count validity varied with devices and study conditions. Its 2020 findings should not be taken as a test of every current model or a guarantee for every activity. Read the 2020 systematic review.

How to read activity and step counts

Use steps or activity minutes to compare your own weeks, provided you wear the same device in a similar way. The direction of change—such as whether you are moving more regularly—is generally more useful than hitting a supposedly perfect count on one day. Device differences and measurement conditions make precise comparisons between trackers unreliable.

Calories burned are also estimates. They are modeled rather than a direct measurement of all the energy your body used, so do not treat a displayed total as an exact allowance for eating or a precise measure of what a workout accomplished.

What resting heart rate can tell you

Resting heart rate (RHR) is a device-derived estimate of your beats per minute while you are inactive or resting. Garmin says normal adult resting heart rates can vary from 60 to 100 beats per minute, while noting that some athletes may have lower readings and that individual physiology differs. This is broad context, not a personal target or a diagnosis. Garmin’s explanation of heart rate and its heart-rate monitoring overview describe the manufacturer’s guidance.

RHR can vary from day to day, so watch its pattern rather than reading too much into one measurement. Devices may derive the estimate differently: Garmin commonly measures during sleep, while Apple’s November 2024 technical document describes using a subset of background measurements from the least active parts of the day and excluding sleep-related periods. That is why numbers from different brands are not necessarily interchangeable. Apple’s November 2024 technical document describes its method.

When workout heart-rate readings are useful

During exercise, heart rate can offer a rough indication of effort. A wrist sensor may be affected by movement or by how the device sits on your wrist. Garmin advises keeping the sensor steady and suggests a compatible chest strap when accuracy is critical. Check that any strap supports your device and intended activity; a wrist reading should not be assumed to be precise in every workout. Garmin’s heart-rate guidance explains these limitations.

How to interpret HRV and recovery scores

HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats. It is not a simple score where higher always means better. Read changes against your own baseline and the device’s measurement method; differences in protocols make cross-device comparisons difficult. Garmin says its HRV status feature needs routine overnight wear for around three weeks to establish a normal range. Garmin’s HRV status guidance explains how its feature is presented.

Readiness and recovery scores are proprietary summaries, not universal grades. Their meaning depends on the manufacturer’s method, so use them as context alongside how you feel and your own established patterns—not as exact instructions about whether to train, rest or eat. The available evidence does not establish a universal interpretation for these branded scores.

What sleep tracking can—and cannot—show

Sleep duration and regularity are practical starting points: they can help you notice changes in how long or consistently you sleep. Compatible wearables may also estimate sleep stages and report overnight measures such as HRV or resting heart rate, but a stage breakdown is an algorithmic estimate, not a clinical sleep measurement. Garmin lists these statistics for compatible devices; features vary by model. Garmin’s sleep-statistics guidance describes its supported data.

If a pattern persists, consider whether your routine or habits have changed, and seek appropriate advice if you have concerns. A tracker’s sleep estimate alone cannot establish a sleep disorder.

Why tracker numbers need cautious interpretation

Garmin says its wearable information is intended as a close estimate and may not be precisely accurate. The company also says its devices are not medical devices and their data are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. This is Garmin’s guidance, not a claim that every manufacturer uses the same algorithms. Garmin’s activity-tracking disclaimer sets out those limits.

The 2020 systematic review found measurement performance varied across steps, energy expenditure and heart rate. It reported Apple Watch and Garmin as the most accurate for heart-rate measurements among the devices reviewed, but that result does not establish a ranking for today’s models, later software, every activity or every wearer. The source does not establish a universal accuracy percentage.

A simple way to use your tracker

  1. Choose a small set. Start with activity, resting heart rate and sleep duration; add HRV only if you can build a personal baseline.
  2. Keep measurement conditions steady. Use the same device and wear it consistently so changes are more comparable.
  3. Look for patterns, not isolated readings. A single high or low number may reflect ordinary variation, device fit or measurement conditions.
  4. Make modest, practical adjustments. Use trends to reflect on movement, routine or recovery, not to follow a score as if it were a prescription.
  5. Ask a health professional about health concerns. A consumer tracker can prompt a question, but it cannot answer a medical one.
