Fitbit Edge is the slimmer wellness-focused tracker; Garmin’s Forerunner 265 is the stronger fit for runners who want multiple GPS modes and training metrics. Battery figures do not establish a universal winner: Google advertises up to seven days for Edge, while Garmin estimates up to 13 days for the Forerunner 265 in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS-only activity mode without music. These are manufacturer estimates based on different methods and usage assumptions, not results from a head-to-head test.

What are you comparing?

“Garmin fitness trackers” covers a broad product range, not one device with a single set of features or battery rating. This comparison uses the Garmin Forerunner 265 as a named example: a GPS running smartwatch with daily health tracking and training tools. It does not represent every Garmin model.

Google describes Fitbit Edge as a slim tracker between a full smartwatch and a simpler band. Its US product specifications list an always-on 1.34-inch AMOLED display, built-in GPS, 5 ATM and IP68 ratings. Google lists compatibility with most Android 11-or-later phones and iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later; Edge also requires a Google Account and the Google Health app.

The Forerunner 265 is a running smartwatch with an AMOLED display and an optional always-on mode. Garmin’s product comparison lists a 5 ATM water rating, music storage, Garmin Pay, multi-band GPS, sleep insights, Pulse Ox, training readiness and training status. The practical distinction is form and focus: Edge is positioned around wellness in a tracker format, while the 265 is built around running and training as well as everyday tracking.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Forerunner® 265, Running Smartwatch, 46mm, Black/Powder Gray
  • Brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls; lightweight design in 46 mm size
  • Up to 13 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode
  • As soon as you wake up, get your morning report with an overview of your sleep, recovery and training outlook alongside HRV status, training readiness and weather (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Plan race strategy with personalized daily suggested workouts based on the race and course that you input into the Garmin Connect app and then view the race widget on your watch; daily suggested workouts adapt after every run to match performance and recovery
  • Training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and get the most out of your workout (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

Which lasts longer?

It depends on how you use the device. Google lists Fitbit Edge at up to seven days, while Garmin publishes separate estimates for the Forerunner 265’s smartwatch and activity modes. Those figures cannot be treated as a controlled comparison: the manufacturers describe different devices, test methods and user profiles.

Device and mode Manufacturer estimate Conditions and qualifications
Fitbit Edge, general battery life Up to 7 days Google says this is an approximate maximum based on 2026 testing in California with preproduction hardware and software, default settings, and a median user profile using a mix of features default in Battery Saver mode. Actual results may be lower.
Fitbit Edge, charging About 90 minutes for a full charge; up to 1 day of use from a 5-minute charge when battery is low Google’s published product specifications; charging speed and battery life can vary with use and conditions.
Garmin Forerunner 265, smartwatch mode Up to 13 days Garmin’s estimate under the assumptions listed on its battery support page. Use beyond those assumptions can reduce runtime.
Garmin Forerunner 265, smartwatch mode with always-on display Up to 5 days Garmin’s estimate; display behavior affects runtime.
Garmin Forerunner 265, GPS-only activity mode Up to 20 hours Without music, under Garmin’s listed assumptions.
Garmin Forerunner 265, SatIQ AutoSelect Up to 16 hours Without music, under Garmin’s listed assumptions.
Garmin Forerunner 265, all-systems multi-band GPS Up to 14 hours Without music, under Garmin’s listed assumptions. Music shortens GPS-mode estimates further.
Garmin Forerunner 265S, smartwatch mode Up to 15 days This is the smaller 265S model, not the Forerunner 265.
Garmin Forerunner 265S, GPS-only activity mode Up to 24 hours Without music; this is the 265S, not the Forerunner 265.

For daily wear, compare smartwatch-mode estimates and consider whether you will use an always-on display or other power-consuming features. For long outdoor workouts, compare GPS mode, satellite selection, screen behavior, music and paired sensors. Edge has built-in GPS; the Forerunner 265 offers several GPS activity modes intended for running and other recorded activities.

Google lists Edge’s battery capacity as 65 mAh. Capacity alone does not predict how long a charge will last across different devices, so the usage estimates and their conditions are more useful for choosing between them.

Which is better for health tracking?

Fitbit Edge has a broad published list of health and wellness measures. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 combines daily wellness tracking with running, recovery and training measures. The better match depends on which measures and analysis you want—not on an established accuracy advantage. The available manufacturer material does not provide an independent, model-specific test showing that one device measures health metrics more accurately.

Rank #3
Garmin Forerunner® 265S, Running Smartwatch, 42mm, Whitestone/Neo Tropic
  • Brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls; lightweight design in 42 mm for smaller wrists
  • Up to 15 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 24 hours in GPS mode

Fitbit Edge’s listed health and wellness features

  • Continuous heart-rate tracking and resting heart rate.
  • Advanced sleep tracking and skin-temperature sensing.
  • SpO2, an ECG app, AFib detection, and irregular, high- or low-heart-rate notifications.
  • Menstrual-cycle tracking, plus monthly blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends.
  • Cardio Load, Readiness, Active Zone Minutes and VO2 max.

Google says Health Coach requires Google Health Premium, sold separately, and some features vary by country or region. The listed blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends are for general wellness and informational use, not diagnosis or treatment. The ECG app is available only in select countries and is not intended for people under 22. Health Coach and some app features also require internet access and the relevant app.

Forerunner 265’s health and training emphasis

  • Sleep monitoring and sleep score, stress tracking, Pulse Ox and Body Battery energy monitoring.
  • Menstrual-cycle and pregnancy tracking.
  • Training measures including training effect, VO2 max, training readiness and training status.
  • Multi-band GPS for supported activity tracking.

Garmin’s 2023 launch material describes the Forerunner 265’s health and training features; app, feature and regional availability can change, so check Garmin’s current product information for your location. Garmin’s comparison page does not list an ECG app for this model; that is not a statement about every Garmin device.

How should you choose?

Choose Fitbit Edge if

  • You prefer a slim tracker rather than a running-watch form factor.
  • You want its specific listed health features, especially ECG or the monthly trends, and have verified that they are available where you live.
  • You are comfortable using a Google Account and Google Health app, and paying separately if you want Health Coach.
  • Your workouts benefit from built-in GPS, but you do not need the Forerunner 265’s range of GPS modes and running-oriented training tools.

Choose the Forerunner 265 if

  • You regularly record runs or other outdoor workouts and want a running smartwatch with GPS mode choices.
  • You value training and recovery measures such as training readiness, training effect and VO2 max alongside daily health tracking.
  • You are willing to manage battery expectations around display settings, satellite mode and whether you play music during GPS activities.

Check the purchase details

As of Google’s October 12, 2026 announcement, Fitbit Edge was listed in the US at $179.99 and available for preorder, with retail availability planned for October 27, 2026. These are time-sensitive US details, not a guarantee of availability elsewhere. Google says Edge bands are sold separately. Garmin’s cited Forerunner 265 launch-page pricing dates to 2023 and should not be treated as a current offer.
