Choose Fitbit Edge if you need a screen, phone-free GPS, an altimeter, ECG readings or live workout feedback on your wrist. Choose Fitbit Air if you want the lightest, least distracting way to track sleep, recovery and everyday activity at a lower price. In the United States, the reported list-price difference is $80: $179.99 for Edge versus $99.99 for Air. Whether that premium is worthwhile depends mainly on how often you exercise without your phone and whether you want to see information while moving.
Fitbit Edge vs Air at a glance
Both trackers cover the basics expected from a modern Fitbit: heart-rate tracking, sleep metrics, activity recognition, blood-oxygen readings (SpO2), heart-rate variability (HRV), resting-heart-rate trends and atrial-fibrillation alerts. Both are rated for up to seven days of battery life, work with Android phones and iPhones, and can be used for core tracking without a Premium subscription.
The differences are concentrated in interaction, location tracking and extra sensors. Edge is a small wrist computer with a display, touch controls, a side button, built-in GPS, an altimeter and an ECG app. Air has no display, no built-in GPS and no ECG app; it is designed to be worn continuously and checked through the phone app.

Google describes Edge as a “slim and lightweight fitness tracker designed for everyday wear.” Its product announcement says it tracks more than 50 workouts with precision GPS and automatic activity-recognition features. Air takes the opposite approach: remove the screen and GPS hardware so the band stays exceptionally light and unobtrusive.

- 【Call and message notifications】: You can receive text messages and SNS notifications (including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram) directly on your wrist. What you get for the extra $80
The reported 2026 US list prices are $99.99 for Air and $179.99 for Edge, according to Smartwatch Insight; Tom’s Guide reports the same rounded prices of $99 and $179. That is an $80 list-price gap before any retailer discount, bundle or promotion. Check the live price at the time you buy because launch pricing and stock can change.
Edge’s premium is hardware, not a different basic tracking service
Edge’s higher price buys a display and the electronics needed for independent workouts and extra measurements. You can glance at a workout, start or stop it on your wrist, follow live information without taking out your phone, record a route with built-in GPS, measure elevation with the altimeter and take an ECG reading with the ECG app. Those are meaningful capabilities if you train outdoors, leave your phone behind or want immediate feedback.
Air’s savings come with a deliberate screen-free design
Air still supplies the core health and sleep measurements listed for the comparison, but it presents them through the phone app rather than on the band. It also depends on the phone for GPS. If you normally carry your phone, review trends later and prefer not to receive information on your wrist, the $80 saving is buying simplicity rather than giving up the measurements you care about most.
Screen, controls and everyday interaction
Fitbit Air: no screen by design
Air has no display. You do not read a pace, heart rate or notification directly from the tracker, and you cannot use it as a visual workout controller. That can be an advantage during sleep or work because there is no bright screen to activate and no stream of on-wrist information to manage. The trade-off is that every check happens later in the companion phone experience.

Fitbit Edge: information at a glance
Edge has a 1.34-inch OLED display with touch controls and a physical side button. Google says the viewing area is 46% larger than on previous trackers. The screen makes the device more useful during a run, walk or gym session: you can see workout information, navigate the tracker and start an activity without reaching for a phone. Tom’s Guide’s central buying question is therefore the right one: how much do you want your fitness tracker to have a screen?
Who benefits from the display?
- Runners, walkers and cyclists who want live information without holding a phone.
- People who start workouts frequently and prefer an on-wrist control.
- Users who want the tracker to feel like an independent device rather than a sensor that reports back later.
If none of those situations describes your routine, the Edge display may spend most of its life unused while still adding cost and weight.
GPS and workout tracking
Edge has built-in GPS
Edge includes built-in GPS. Google characterizes it as precision GPS and pairs it with automatic activity recognition; Smartwatch Insight reports support for more than 50 workout modes and on-wrist workout starts. This enables phone-free route and distance tracking for compatible outdoor activities. You can leave the phone behind for a workout and still record location data on the tracker.
Air uses the phone’s location capability
Air has no built-in GPS and relies on the connected phone for location tracking. For a walk or run where your phone is already with you, that can be sufficient. It is less suitable when you want to travel light, exercise away from your phone or avoid keeping a phone powered and nearby during the activity.

- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
Decide based on your actual workout routine
- List the workouts you do outdoors. Include running, walking, cycling and any other activity for which route or distance matters.
- Ask whether your phone is always with you. If the answer is yes, Air can use that phone-based setup. If the answer is no, Edge’s built-in GPS is the relevant upgrade.
- Decide whether live feedback matters. Phone-dependent recording is different from seeing information while you move; only Edge supplies the screen and on-wrist controls described here.
Health sensors, ECG and elevation
Measurements shared by both trackers
The comparison lists heart-rate tracking, resting-heart-rate measurements, SpO2, HRV, sleep-stage tracking and AFib alerts for Air. Edge retains those functions, so choosing Air does not mean giving up the core sleep and cardiovascular trend features identified for this generation.
What Edge adds
- ECG app: Edge adds an ECG app; Air does not have one.
- Altimeter: Edge includes an altimeter for elevation-related information; Air does not.
- On-wrist workout controls: Edge can start workouts on the tracker and display their information.
An ECG app is a specialized feature, not a replacement for clinical care. If you are buying specifically for ECG capability, confirm that the feature is enabled for your country and intended use in the current Fitbit software and regulatory documentation. The supplied product comparison establishes that Edge has the app and Air does not, but it does not provide a clinical accuracy claim or a medical diagnosis capability.
Sleep and recovery: which one is better?
For sleep and recovery wear, Air has the stronger physical design argument. It is listed at 12g including its band, and TechRadar characterizes it as comfortable for day-and-night wear. Edge is listed at 17.7g without its band, so the comparison is not perfectly like-for-like: Edge’s published figure excludes the band while Air’s includes it. Even with that qualification, Air is the lighter option in the supplied specifications and has no screen.
Why Air suits overnight use
- The lower listed weight can make continuous wear easier, especially for people sensitive to wrist weight.
- The screen-free design avoids a display on the wrist while sleeping.
- Its listed health set includes sleep stages, HRV, resting heart rate and SpO2, the measurements commonly used to review sleep and recovery trends.
When Edge can still be the better recovery tracker
Edge records the same shared sleep and recovery-related measurements listed above. It may be the better overall choice if you want those trends but also need GPS, a screen or ECG during the day. Buying Air solely for sleep is sensible when lightness and unobtrusive wear are your top priorities; buying Edge is sensible when sleep is one part of a broader, more active use case.

Neither product’s published comparison establishes that one produces better sleep-stage or recovery readings than the other. The practical difference supported here is wearability and the additional Edge hardware, not a claim that Edge is more accurate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery life and charging
Google and Smartwatch Insight rate both trackers for up to seven days of battery life. Both sources also report that five minutes of charging can provide about one day of use. “Up to” is a maximum rating, not a guarantee for every person: GPS sessions, display use, notifications, sensor settings and other activity can change real-world endurance.
How the battery difference affects the choice
There is no stated battery-life advantage for either model in the supplied specifications. Edge’s screen and built-in GPS add capabilities, but the published rating remains up to seven days for both. Air’s screen-free design may feel simpler to maintain, while Edge’s five-minute quick-charge claim helps when you discover the battery is low before a workout.

- Check the battery before an overnight session or a long GPS workout.
- If it is low, use the reported five-minute quick-charge window as a short-term top-up rather than assuming a full charge.
- Charge fully when convenient, especially before a trip or a multi-day event where you may not have regular access to power.
The seven-day figure and one-day-from-five-minutes claim are manufacturer and comparison-source ratings; they are not a guarantee of a particular number of hours under your settings.

Phone compatibility and feature limits
iPhone support
Both Air and Edge work with Android and iPhone. Edge’s stated iPhone requirement is iOS 16.4 or later. If your iPhone is older than that requirement, verify compatibility before ordering rather than assuming every iPhone will pair.
Android-only quick replies on Edge
Edge supports quick replies only on Android. An iPhone user can still use Edge as a tracker, but should not expect that Android messaging function to be available on iOS. The supplied specifications do not identify an equivalent iPhone reply feature.
What compatibility means in practice
- Choose either model if your phone meets the current Fitbit app and operating-system requirements.
- Choose Edge for its hardware features, not for Android quick replies, if you use an iPhone.
- Check the current compatibility list before purchase if your phone runs an older operating system or a less common Android configuration.
Fitbit Premium and the cost beyond the tracker
Core tracking works without Premium on both models. Advanced sleep features and the Gemini-powered health coach require Google Health Premium. The launch comparison reports that three months were included, but the ongoing subscription price is not established in the supplied information.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchHow to evaluate the subscription
- Start with the no-subscription experience. Confirm that the core heart-rate, activity and sleep information you want is available without Premium.
- Identify the paid features you would actually use. Advanced sleep analysis and the Gemini-powered health coach are the specifically named Premium additions.
- Price the first year separately from the hardware. The $99.99 or $179.99 list price does not represent the cost of any continuing Premium plan.
- Set a reminder before the included period ends. If your purchase includes three months, decide whether the paid features justify continuing before renewal.
Because the supplied comparison does not state the recurring Premium price, do not treat either tracker’s list price as the complete long-term cost if you want those advanced features.
Which tracker is worth buying for different people?
Buy Fitbit Edge when these needs describe you
- You want to run, walk or cycle without carrying a phone and still record a route with built-in GPS.
- You need to see workout information on your wrist while moving.
- You want to start workouts on the tracker instead of in the phone app.
- You need an altimeter for elevation information.
- You specifically want an ECG app.
- You want one device that combines sleep tracking with more independent daytime workout use.
Buy Fitbit Air when these needs describe you
- You want to spend about $80 less at the reported US list prices.
- You already carry your phone during GPS workouts.
- You prefer a screen-free tracker that stays quiet and unobtrusive.
- You place a high value on low weight for overnight wear.
- You mainly want sleep, recovery and everyday health trends rather than live workout data.
- You do not need ECG, elevation data or phone-free tracking.
Use this tie-breaker
Imagine your next ten workouts. If you would leave your phone behind for several of them, Edge’s built-in GPS is likely worth the premium. If you would carry the phone for all ten and review every result later, Air preserves the core tracking set while reducing cost, weight and visual distraction.
Availability and buying timing
Tom’s Guide and Smartwatch Insight reported Edge preorder availability with an October 27, 2026 release date. Because that date and availability information were reported before release, verify current stock and delivery timing at the retailer you plan to use. Air and Edge prices can also move during launch promotions, so compare the live prices rather than assuming the original $80 difference still applies.
Final buying checklist
Before placing an order, answer these questions:
- Do I need GPS that works when my phone is not with me?
- Will I use a screen to check workout information while exercising?
- Do I need an ECG app or an altimeter?
- Is minimum weight and screen-free overnight wear more important than on-wrist controls?
- Does my iPhone run iOS 16.4 or later, or does my Android phone meet the current Fitbit requirements?
- Will I use Premium’s advanced sleep features or Gemini-powered health coach after any included three-month period?
- What are the live prices and stock status today?
If the first three answers are mostly yes, choose Edge. If the last four priorities dominate and phone-based GPS is acceptable, choose Air.
