If a Fitbit Edge or Fitbit Air is not syncing, keep the tracker close to your phone, disable Battery Saver and Bedtime mode, check Google Health permissions, reset Bluetooth, charge the tracker, and run a manual sync. If that fails, restart both devices, update their software, remove competing pairings, then add the Fitbit again in Google Health.

What “not syncing” usually means

Fitbit trackers and watches, including Fitbit Aria Air, use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to exchange data with a phone or tablet. Google’s support documentation describes BLE as the link used to sync the wearable with the mobile device. The tracker must therefore be close enough for the phone to maintain that short-range connection. Internet access is also required so Google Health can send the received data to your account.

Opening Google Health while the Fitbit is nearby normally starts an automatic sync. You can also start one manually from the app. A sync problem can be caused by the Bluetooth link, Android permissions, restricted background activity, a low or empty battery, another phone already claiming the Fitbit, or a damaged or incompatible charging cable. The order below isolates those causes from the quickest checks to the more disruptive fixes.

Mixblu Charger Cable Replacement for Fitbit Inspire 3 (2 Pack/3.3Ft)

  • Made of ABS plastic and TPE cable, lightweight, stable and durable, giving you a good charging experience.
  • 3.3ft long charging cord provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.

How to start a manual sync

Manual syncing is the fastest way to tell whether the connection is merely idle or genuinely broken. Keep the Edge or Air within a short distance of the phone and leave the tracker powered on.

  1. Open Google Health and select the Today tab.
  2. Pull down on the Today screen and release. This starts a manual sync.
  3. If you prefer the connection menu, open Connections and select Sync.

Leave the app open until the sync indicator finishes. A successful run should bring recent activity into Google Health. If the time or data does not change, continue with the recovery sequence rather than repeatedly pulling down on the same screen.

The official recovery sequence

Follow these steps in order. After each one, open Google Health with the tracker nearby and try the manual sync again. Stopping as soon as the data arrives avoids unnecessary unpairing or reinstallation.

Mixblu Charger Cable Replacement for Fitbit Charge 6/Charge 5/Luxe Watch | Fast Long Charging Cord 2Pack 3.3Ft
  • Mixblu replacement charging cables are specially designed for Charge 6, Charge 5 and Luxe only.
  • According to customer voice and market research, we continuously optimize the magnetic attraction strength, and the upgraded version can provide a strong and stable connection after testing.
  • Passed thousands of qualified tests, it can provide a fast charging speed and stable charging status.
  • Made of ABS plastic and TPE cable, lightweight, stable and durable, giving you a good charging experience.
  • 3.3ft long charging cord provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.
  1. Bring the Fitbit next to the phone. Keep the devices together during the test. A room, bag or another body can put the wearable outside a reliable BLE range.
  2. Turn off Battery Saver and Bedtime mode. Google says these modes limit background data connectivity. Disable them temporarily on the phone, and retry while Google Health is open.
  3. Check Google Health permissions on Android. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions. Allow Location and, on Android 12 or later, Nearby devices. Return to Google Health and run a manual sync.
  4. Reset Bluetooth and verify internet access. Turn Bluetooth off, wait three seconds, then turn it on again. Confirm that Wi‑Fi or cellular data is working before opening Google Health.
  5. Put the Fitbit on its charger. Connect the Edge or Air to its charger before trying again. A tracker that is too low on power may not maintain the wireless connection, and charging also confirms whether the cable and contacts can supply power.
  6. Run another manual sync. Pull down on Today, or use Connections > Sync. Keep the app in the foreground while it checks the device.
  7. Restart the phone. Use the phone’s normal power-menu restart command. After it boots, unlock it, make sure Bluetooth and internet access are enabled, open Google Health and retry.
  8. Restart the Fitbit. Use the restart control provided for your Edge or Air model. If the tracker is screenless or does not expose an on-device restart control, keep it connected to the charger and use the model-specific restart instructions in Google Health’s device help. Retry once the device is back on.
  9. Install pending updates. Update the phone’s operating system, Google Health and the Fitbit firmware when updates are offered. Restarting after an update can be necessary before Bluetooth services reconnect.
  10. Remove Google Health from nearby secondary devices. If Google Health is installed on another phone or tablet close to the tracker, uninstall it there or unpair the Fitbit from that device. A second device can attempt to maintain the connection while you are testing the primary phone.
  11. Remove other Fitbit devices. In Google Health, remove unused Fitbit devices. Also open the phone’s Bluetooth list and remove old Fitbit entries that are no longer in use. Leave only the tracker you are trying to repair.
  12. Forget and pair again. In Google Health, disconnect the affected device. In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, choose Forget for its entry. Then return to Google Health > Connections > Add device and complete pairing there. Do not start a new pairing from the generic Bluetooth screen alone; Google Health must associate the tracker with your account.
  13. Reinstall Google Health if necessary. Uninstall the app, install it again, sign in with the Google Account used by the Fitbit and add the device from Connections > Add device. This is the last software step because it removes the app’s local state and requires setup again.

Android permission and background-connection checks

Why Location and Nearby devices matter

On Android, Google Health needs the permissions that allow it to discover and communicate with a nearby BLE accessory. The relevant path is Settings > Apps > Google Health > Permissions. Enable Location; on Android 12 and newer, also enable Nearby devices. If either permission is denied, the app may open normally while failing to discover the tracker.

After changing a permission, close Google Health, reopen it with the Fitbit beside the phone, and run a manual sync. This gives the app a fresh discovery attempt instead of relying on the failed session that was running before the change.

Battery Saver and Bedtime mode

These modes are useful for extending battery life or limiting interruptions, but Google identifies both as restrictions on background data connectivity. Turn them off while diagnosing the problem. Once syncing is reliable, you can test whether re-enabling one of them changes the behavior.

Bluetooth versus internet

Bluetooth carries the data from the tracker to the phone; Wi‑Fi or cellular data carries the information onward through Google Health. A phone can show a Bluetooth connection and still fail to finish synchronization if it has no working internet route. Check both links separately rather than assuming that one green status means the entire sync path is healthy.

Charging problems that look like sync problems

A tracker that will not charge cannot complete a sync, even when the phone’s Bluetooth settings are correct. Connect the Fitbit before retrying the app. Inspect whether the charging connector seats properly and whether the device shows any charging indication. If the supplied cable is lost or damaged, use a model-specific Fitbit Edge replacement charging cable or the exact replacement specified for your Air model; verify compatibility before buying because Edge and Air accessories are not automatically interchangeable.

Google’s battery guidance for Fitbit Air says to use the cable supplied with the device and warns against charging below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). Move the tracker to a room-temperature environment before charging if it has been left in freezing or very hot conditions. Do not treat “up to seven days” as a promise that a nearly empty unit will recover instantly; allow it to charge and then repeat the manual sync.

Mixblu Charger Cable Fits Google Fitbit Versa 4/Sense 2/Versa 3/Sense Watch
  • Mixblu replacement charging cables are specially designed for Versa 4/Sense 2/Versa 3/Sense.
  • Passed thousands of qualified tests, it can provide a fast charging speed and stable charging environment.
  • Made of ABS plastic and TPE cable, lightweight, stable and durable, giving you a good charging experience.
  • 3.3ft long charging cable provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.
  • Just simply plug your smartwatch into your laptop, power bank, wall charger or car charger to charge.

What the charging result tells you

  • The tracker begins charging and then syncs: the original failure was likely related to low power or a loose connection.
  • The tracker never indicates charging: check the cable, connector alignment, power source and temperature before changing Bluetooth settings again.
  • The tracker charges but remains invisible: continue with the permission, Bluetooth and pairing steps; charging alone does not repair a lost software association.

When another phone or old pairing is interfering

Fitbit setup is account-based in Google Health, but the nearby Bluetooth environment still matters. A secondary phone, tablet or an old Fitbit entry can cause the wrong device to be selected or can leave the tracker associated with a device you are not testing.

Remove Google Health from nearby secondary devices or unpair the Fitbit there. On the primary phone, remove unused Fitbit devices in Google Health and delete their entries from the system Bluetooth list. Then disconnect the affected tracker in Google Health, choose Forget in Bluetooth settings, and add it again through Google Health > Connections > Add device. This creates one clean pairing path instead of making the app compete with stale records.

If Edge works but Air does not, or the reverse

Do not assume that the two products expose identical controls or settings. Edge has a screen and onboard controls, while Air uses a screenless design in this comparison; therefore, a status that is visible on Edge may need to be checked in Google Health for Air. Charging cables and accessory availability can also differ.

  • Only Edge fails: confirm that the phone meets the Edge requirement of Android 11 or newer or iOS 16.4 or newer, then check that the correct Edge entry is selected in Google Health.
  • Only Air fails: prioritize charging with its supplied cable, check the temperature limits, and use Google Health to verify device status because the screenless hardware provides less local feedback.
  • Both fail on the same phone: focus on phone-wide causes: Battery Saver or Bedtime mode, permissions, Bluetooth state, internet access, pending updates and competing pairings.
  • The Fitbit syncs with another phone: the tracker is probably functional; remove the old phone’s Google Health and Bluetooth association before repairing it to the intended phone.

iPhone and compatibility considerations

Google lists Edge support for most Android 11+ phones and iOS 16.4+ devices. The Edge also requires a Google Account, Google Health and internet access. Feature availability can vary by region and device, so a compatible operating-system version does not guarantee that every Edge feature is offered in every market.

The documented permission path above is for Android. On an iPhone, use the permissions and Bluetooth prompts shown by Google Health and confirm that the device is within the Edge’s supported iOS range. If the app does not offer the tracker during setup, update the phone and Google Health before deleting the pairing; once a pairing is removed, you will need to add the device again.

How to tell whether the fix worked

A successful repair has three signs: Google Health discovers the correct Edge or Air, the manual sync completes without an error, and the latest activity appears in the account. Test once with the app open and the tracker nearby. Then close Google Health, wait for a new activity or measurement, reopen the app and check whether automatic syncing resumes. If only the manual test works, revisit Battery Saver, Bedtime mode and Android permissions because those settings specifically affect background connectivity.

If the tracker still cannot be discovered after charging, restarting, updating, removing competing pairings and performing a clean add-device setup, record the model, phone operating-system version, Google Health version, last successful sync and charging behavior before contacting Google support. Those details distinguish an account or app problem from a device, cable or Bluetooth hardware problem.
