Neither Fitbit Air nor Apple Watch is a proven universal winner for health tracking. Fitbit Air is the more focused choice for screenless, overnight wear and fewer interruptions; Apple Watch pairs health and fitness features with a display, apps and smartwatch controls. The better fit depends on which metrics you want, how you plan to wear the device and whether you also want a wrist-based computer.
What each device tracks
Fitbit Air
Google lists 24/7 heart-rate tracking, heart-rhythm monitoring with AFib alerts, blood oxygen (SpO2), resting heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), sleep stages and sleep duration. Feature availability can vary. Google describes Fitbit Air as screenless and designed for notification-free wear. Its sleep tracking is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Apple Watch
Apple documents sleep schedules, sleep goals and sleep history, along with heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, medication logging, cycle tracking and overnight vitals. Which features are available depends on the watch model and, for some features, region. Check the specifications for the exact model rather than assuming every Apple Watch has the same capabilities.

How the health-tracking evidence compares
The available head-to-head reports are small editorial tests, not clinical validation. They involve different Apple Watch models and individual activities, so they cannot establish that one product family is more accurate overall.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]
- Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
One 10-kilometer run
In a 2026 TechRadar test with Fitbit Air and Apple Watch Ultra 3, the reported average heart rates were 158 bpm and 161 bpm, respectively. The devices recorded 773 and 750 calories, and distances of 10.43 km and 10.03 km. The reviewer considered the heart-rate and calorie readings close but noted a substantial distance and pace difference. The reviewer’s Polar H10 chest strap malfunctioned, leaving no useful reference measurement; these results are not a validation against a reliable reference device. TechRadar’s test used one run, not a controlled study.
One 5,000-step walk
Tom’s Guide reported that both Fitbit Air and Apple Watch Series 11 were close to a manually counted 5,000-step total, with Apple slightly closer in that single walk. The reviewer also raised concerns about Fitbit Air’s elevation data. This one test does not establish a general ranking for step counts or elevation across users and activities. Tom’s Guide’s walk test describes its result.
For running, the distance discrepancy in the TechRadar test is a reason to check the exact watch, activity and setup if pace or route data matters to you—not proof that Fitbit Air will be less accurate on every run. The report says the run used phone GPS; the result should not be generalized beyond that test.

Fitbit Air’s screenless design may suit people who want to wear a tracker overnight without a display or wrist notifications. Google advertises up to a week of battery life, but that is a manufacturer claim, not a like-for-like independent battery test against Apple Watch. Apple offers sleep schedules, goals and history, while overnight vitals depend on model and availability. In practice, comfort, fit and charging habits matter alongside the feature list.
Rank #2
- Lighter gets mightier with the Google Fitbit Air Special Edition Stephen Curry[1]; including a water resistant coating, it's sweatproof and moisture-wicking for your toughest workouts[2,3]

Display, smartwatch features and compatibility
Fitbit Air is controlled through its phone app and requires a Google Account and the Google Health app. Google says it works with most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later. Confirm compatibility for your phone and region before choosing it.
Apple Watch adds an on-wrist display and, on supported models and configurations, calls, texts, apps, Apple Pay and cellular use. Exact iPhone and software requirements depend on the watch model. Check Apple’s current compatibility requirements for the specific model you plan to use.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Fitbit Air if
- You want a screenless tracker for discreet, overnight and all-day wear.
- You value the listed sleep and heart metrics and are comfortable checking them in the Google Health app.
- Your phone meets Google’s stated compatibility requirements.
Choose Apple Watch if
- You want health and exercise tracking alongside a display, apps and communication features.
- You want to see information and use smartwatch controls on your wrist.
- You are choosing a specific Apple Watch model whose features and compatibility suit your needs.
If accuracy is your deciding factor
The available tests are not enough to name an overall accuracy winner. Compare the exact models and the metric you care about—such as heart rate, steps, distance or elevation—under the activity and setup you will actually use. Fit, software and phone configuration can matter, and stronger claims would require independent testing against an appropriate reference device.

Google says Fitbit Air is not intended for medical purposes and that heart-rate accuracy can be affected by physiology, device location, movement and activity. Its sleep tracking should not be relied on for medical purposes. Consumer alerts and readings are not diagnoses; if you have symptoms or health concerns, consult a qualified clinician.
