The Surface Laptop Ultra is a genuine high-end Windows workstation, not simply a larger thin-and-light. Early reviews find exceptional GPU and local-AI potential, a superb 120Hz mini-LED screen, excellent input devices and unusually flexible ports. They also agree on the compromises: prices from $2,599 to $5,899, only middling battery life, weaker CPU efficiency than a MacBook Pro and first-generation webcam, audio and software polish.
What the Surface Laptop Ultra is
Microsoft’s first “Ultra” Surface Laptop is a 15-inch machine built around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark N1X platform. It targets creators, developers and engineers who need substantial GPU and memory capacity in a portable Windows system. The chassis weighs 4.4 pounds in its base configuration and contains a 92 Wh battery, removable SSD storage and a magnetic USB4 charging connection.
Its 3270×2180 PixelSense Ultra mini-LED panel runs at 120Hz. Connectivity includes two USB4 ports, a separate magnetic USB4 charging port, HDMI 2.1, USB-A 3.1, an SD card reader, 3.5mm audio and Wi-Fi 7. That combination is closer to a mobile workstation than to a conventional ultraportable.
Price and configurations
Microsoft’s launch and review pricing spans a very wide range. Inventory and prices can change, so verify the configuration immediately before ordering.

| Configuration | Price reported in 2026 | Processor and graphics | Memory and storage | Windows edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry model | $2,599 | 18-core RTX Spark N1X; 5,120 GPU cores | 24GB unified memory; 512GB SSD | Windows 11 Home |
| 20-core model | From $3,699 | 20-core RTX Spark N1X; 6,144 GPU cores | 32GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB; storage options vary | Windows 11 Pro |
| Top reviewed model | $5,899 | 20-core RTX Spark N1X; 6,144 GPU cores | 128GB unified memory; 1TB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
Unified memory is shared by Windows, applications and graphics, so the 24GB base model does not provide 24GB solely for software. It is suitable for moderate workloads that specifically need RTX Spark, but large local models, complex scenes and heavy virtualized development environments justify considering 64GB or 128GB. The $5,899 version is specialist workstation pricing; buy it only when the memory capacity has a measurable business value.
Where the reviews find real advantages
GPU performance and local AI
RTX Spark trades some efficiency for a large shared memory pool and strong GPU throughput. Review workloads included Photoshop, Premiere, Cyberpunk 2077, text-to-video generation and local large-language-model work. That makes the Ultra unusually capable for a Windows laptop that can be carried between meetings or studios. The 128GB configuration is particularly relevant when a model, graphics data and the operating environment must remain in memory at once.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Gaming capability
Tom’s Guide measured 80 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Extreme with ray tracing and DLSS. In the same comparison, an RTX 5060 laptop reached 31 fps, an RTX 5070 laptop 81 fps and an RTX 5090 laptop 182 fps. The result is near RTX 5070 territory in that test, but it does not make the Ultra a universally better gaming purchase: conventional x86 gaming laptops generally offer broader game compatibility, more gaming-focused display choices and better value when games are the main purpose.
Display, keyboard and trackpad
Reviewers praise the first-generation mini-LED panel’s resolution, brightness and 120Hz motion. WIRED found it brighter and taller than the MacBook Pro display, although more reflective. Windows Central called the trackpad one of the best it had used, and the keyboard received similarly strong practical feedback. The display’s reflectivity matters in bright offices or near windows, where a less glossy panel may be easier to use.

Build and expandability
The dense, solid chassis, SD card reader, HDMI 2.1 and USB-A reduce dongle dependence for cameras, displays and older peripherals. Removable SSD storage is a meaningful advantage over many sealed premium laptops, although the memory is not presented as user-upgradable.
Where the MacBook Pro still leads
Battery and efficiency
WIRED recorded 12 hours of local-video playback. Its MacBook Pro comparison lasted roughly nine or ten hours longer in the same broad test, while Windows Central described the Ultra’s battery life as only “okay,” especially during sustained GPU work. Tom’s Guide and Tom’s Hardware also found Apple ahead in raw CPU performance or efficiency in several tests. Tom’s Hardware recorded 3,151 single-core and 20,203 multi-core in Geekbench 6 for the Ultra; those are bursty benchmark results, not a guarantee of application performance.

Audio, camera and software polish
Reviewers report that the MacBook Pro retains advantages in speakers, webcam quality, screen reflectivity, application support and quiet operation. Windows Central also noted that Copilot+ features were absent at review time and that the Ultra lacks presence sensing. Buyers dependent on a mature creative-app ecosystem or frequent video calls should weigh those omissions as heavily as GPU specifications.

Which configuration should you buy?
Choose the $2,599 model when
- Your projects are moderate and you specifically need RTX Spark acceleration.
- 24GB shared memory is sufficient after allowing headroom for Windows and graphics workloads.
- You want the lowest entry price and can accept Windows 11 Home.
Choose 64GB or more when
- You run local AI models, large video or 3D projects, multiple containers or virtual machines.
- Restarting or offloading work because of memory pressure would cost more than the upgrade.
Choose 128GB only with a defined workload
The $5,899 model makes sense for professionals whose models, datasets or creative timelines genuinely exceed lower capacities. It is difficult to justify for ordinary office work, light editing or occasional gaming.

Verdict: a specialist rival, not a universal MacBook replacement
The Surface Laptop Ultra earns “MacBook Pro rival” status through its RTX Spark GPU, up-to-128GB unified memory, capable local-AI performance, high-resolution 120Hz display and excellent controls. It does not win on battery endurance, CPU efficiency, acoustic refinement or webcam and speaker polish. The practical choice is therefore workload-led: buy the Ultra for demanding Windows, GPU, memory and local-AI work; choose a MacBook Pro for long unplugged sessions and a mature, quiet media machine; choose a conventional RTX laptop when gaming compatibility and frame rates matter most.
