If Firefox won’t download a file, first check the Downloads panel for a security warning or failed item. If there is no warning, verify the download folder in Settings > General > Downloads, then check whether the problem affects every file or only a particular type. These checks help distinguish a blocked file from a destination, file-handling, or security-software problem.
1. Check the Downloads panel for a warning or failure
Open Firefox’s Downloads panel and inspect the affected item. It may show that a download is still in progress, failed, or was blocked by Firefox’s download protection. A warning may explain the concern and offer actions for the pending file.
Treat a warning as a security decision, not as an error to dismiss automatically. Allow a blocked file only if you have established that both the file and its source are trustworthy. If the item is still downloading, wait for it to finish before troubleshooting where it was saved.

2. Check where Firefox is trying to save the file
Firefox uses the download folder specified in its settings. If that folder is unavailable or Firefox cannot write to it, a download may not save. Mozilla identifies a problem with the selected folder as one possible cause.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Open General and scroll to Downloads.
- Check the selected folder. Choose a different folder you can access, then try the download again.
If the new location works, the original destination is likely the issue. You can keep the accessible folder selected or investigate why Firefox cannot save to the original one. The exact reason may depend on your operating system and its folder permissions.

3. Determine whether one file type or site is affected
If other downloads work but a particular kind of file does not, inspect its assigned action in Firefox. Open Settings > General, then find Files and Applications. Look for the affected content type and review the action Firefox has assigned to it.
Firefox’s handling can depend on the media type supplied by the website’s server. If a file is handled unexpectedly on just one site, the site may be providing incorrect media-type information. That possibility is different from a general failure to download files; settings changes in Firefox may not correct a server-side problem.

4. Check security software if Firefox shows no clear cause
Firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, and other internet security software can block downloads. If Firefox shows no specific warning, check your security product for a block or alert related to the download before changing its protections.

Security software may also scan files as they arrive. Mozilla notes that this can make large downloads take longer to complete and can increase CPU usage; that behavior does not by itself mean Firefox has stopped working. If a download eventually finishes, allow time for scanning before treating it as failed.

Mozilla suggests temporarily disabling security software as a diagnostic test, then re-enabling it. If you choose to do this, keep the test brief, avoid unrelated browsing or downloads while protection is off, and turn protection back on immediately. Do not leave security features disabled as a workaround.

5. Test for an extension or theme conflict
If the folder, file handling, and security-software checks do not explain the problem, use Firefox’s broader troubleshooting process. Troubleshoot Mode can help determine whether an extension or theme is contributing to the issue. If downloads work in that mode, investigate your add-ons and theme rather than changing unrelated download settings.
Mozilla’s troubleshoot-and-diagnose guide describes the available steps, including Troubleshoot Mode and Refresh Firefox. Mozilla recommends Refresh Firefox as a way to address many problems while retaining essential information, but it is not a guaranteed fix for download failures. Review what the refresh changes before using it.
6. Match the next step to the symptom
- A warning appears for one file: Read it and decide whether the file and source are trustworthy before taking any action to allow it.
- Downloads fail broadly without a warning: Try an accessible alternate folder, then check for security-software blocks and test with Troubleshoot Mode.
- Only one file type behaves differently: Review its action under Settings > General > Files and Applications; if it is site-specific, server-provided media-type information may be involved.
- The file appears to download but is not where expected: Check the folder listed under Settings > General > Downloads.
- The same download also fails in other applications: That is a useful diagnostic clue, but it does not establish Firefox as the cause. Check the error message and your operating system’s download, network, and security settings.
The exact error, operating system, Firefox version, whether every file fails, and whether the item appears in the Downloads panel can all narrow the diagnosis. Mozilla’s guide also includes platform-specific examples; follow a Mac-specific procedure only when your platform and error match its conditions.
Use about:config only as a last resort
Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance includes preference-reset instructions for experienced users. Changing settings in about:config can affect Firefox’s stability, security, and performance. Do not change preferences at random; use those instructions only when you understand the specific preference involved and the documented steps fit your problem.
