For a faster, more reliable Firefox experience, identify what is slow before changing settings. Update to the latest supported Firefox version available for your device, restart, and use Firefox’s built-in diagnostics to see whether a tab, extension, or graphics issue is responsible. Then make one targeted, reversible change at a time. Mozilla’s support guidance explains settings and troubleshooting steps, but does not establish a universal speed increase or a single fastest configuration.
“Firefox 141” is historical framing, not a current-version recommendation. Mozilla’s enterprise release notes dated July 21, 2025, cover Firefox 141 and Firefox 140.1 ESR in that enterprise context; they are not a complete consumer feature list. Menu labels and setting availability can differ by operating system, Firefox release, and distribution channel.
Start with the symptom, not a list of hidden tweaks
Before changing anything, note what happens and when: slow startup, one sluggish website, high CPU use, high memory use, video or display trouble, or a privacy concern. Update Firefox through the update controls available in your version, restart it, and reproduce the issue. This gives you a useful baseline and avoids changing several settings without knowing which one mattered.
Firefox includes built-in performance, privacy, startup, and data-collection settings. Their exact labels and availability can vary across operating systems, releases, and distribution channels, so check the settings in the version you actually use rather than copying a configuration intended for another setup.

Find out what is using resources
When Firefox feels slow, use its resource tools before removing add-ons or changing advanced preferences. Mozilla describes about:processes for examining process performance and about:memory for inspecting memory use. Firefox’s task manager can also show resource use by tabs, extensions, and processes. Enter the relevant address in the address bar.
- If one tab or site stands out, test that page on its own and check whether the problem is limited to that site.
- If an extension appears responsible, disable or remove that extension as a test rather than making unrelated changes.
- If overall memory use is the concern, use
about:memoryto investigate before concluding that a fixed process count or a general preference tweak will help.
These tools help narrow down a cause; they do not provide a benchmark proving that a particular change will make every Firefox installation faster. Mozilla’s troubleshooting documentation describes procedures, not controlled performance comparisons.
Test for add-on, theme, or graphics conflicts
For general slowness or a suspected conflict, start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode. Mozilla says this temporarily disables add-ons and themes and turns off hardware acceleration. It is a diagnostic session, not a permanent configuration change.

- Open Firefox’s Help menu and choose the Troubleshoot Mode option. The exact wording or menu location may vary by release and operating system.
- Restart in Troubleshoot Mode and reproduce the same problem.
- If the issue goes away, return to normal mode and investigate extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration individually. Change one item at a time so you can identify the relevant cause.
- If the issue remains, the test has not implicated those components; continue with the symptom-specific checks below.
Do not treat blanket extension removal as a proven optimization. An add-on is worth changing when evidence points to it or when you no longer need it.
“Firefox uses too many CPU resources”
Use about:processes or Firefox’s task manager to see whether a particular tab, extension, or process is consuming CPU. If the issue is tied to video, games, animation, or another graphics-heavy task, hardware acceleration may affect the balance between CPU and GPU work.
When to test hardware acceleration
Mozilla describes hardware acceleration as using the GPU for graphics-intensive content, which can reduce CPU load. It is not a universal speed switch. Mozilla also lists flickering, playback problems, high GPU temperature, and graphics-driver crashes as cases where turning it off may help diagnose trouble.

- Open Firefox settings and find the performance section; its label and placement may differ in your version.
- Change the hardware-acceleration option only if you are investigating a relevant graphics or playback symptom.
- Restart Firefox after changing the setting, as Mozilla directs, and compare the same task or page.
- If the symptom is worse or unchanged, restore the previous setting.
There is no supported fixed content-process count or arbitrary about:config value established as fastest across devices. Avoid applying such changes as generic optimization.

“Firefox takes a long time to start up”
Mozilla’s startup guidance identifies a complex homepage, extensions or themes, and antivirus scanning as possible causes. The guidance dates from 2022, so treat these as troubleshooting checks rather than an exhaustive diagnosis for every current setup.
- Temporarily use a blank or default homepage to see whether a complex startup page is adding delay.
- Use Troubleshoot Mode to check whether extensions or a theme are involved, then isolate any likely add-on individually.
- If the delay began after antivirus software or its settings changed, consult that security product’s vendor rather than disabling protection as a general speed fix.
Clear data only when it matches the problem
If a page will not load correctly, clearing cookies or cached web content can resolve some site problems. These actions have different consequences from clearing Firefox’s startup cache, so select only the data you are willing to remove.

- Cookies and site data: Removing them can sign you out or reset website state. Target the affected site where Firefox offers that option, rather than clearing everything by default.
- Cached web content: Clearing cached files may help with certain loading or display problems. It is not a general performance guarantee.
- Startup cache: Mozilla provides a separate Clear startup cache action for certain interface problems. Its support article says this does not change profile data or add-ons.
Do not confuse the startup cache with cookies and site data: they are separate actions with different effects.

Firefox offers privacy protections and data-collection controls, but privacy choices can involve compatibility trade-offs. In desktop settings, Mozilla says users can manage technical and interaction data, studies, daily usage pings, automatic crash reports, and remote improvements; changes save automatically. The controls available and their labels may vary by version.

Sharing diagnostics can support Mozilla’s bug-fixing and performance work. Review the available data-collection controls and decide which to leave enabled rather than assuming every option has the same purpose.
Tracking protection, HTTPS-Only Mode, and site compatibility
Enhanced Tracking Protection and HTTPS-Only Mode are among Firefox’s privacy and security features. Mozilla’s support material also notes that advanced fingerprinting resistance can cause problems. If a site breaks, investigate whether a protection setting is related to that specific site; do not casually weaken protections everywhere as a speed fix.
Make changes in a way you can reverse
- Write down the symptom and how to reproduce it.
- Check the resource tools or use Troubleshoot Mode to narrow down the likely cause.
- Choose the setting or component that matches the symptom, and change only that one.
- Restart if the setting requires it, then repeat the same task and compare behavior.
- Revert the change if it does not help or makes the problem worse.
This approach keeps data-impacting actions, privacy trade-offs, and performance changes distinct. It also avoids promising results that Mozilla’s procedural support pages do not quantify.
