Mozilla is reportedly developing Private Browsing Lock, a Windows feature intended to add an access lock to Firefox private-browsing sessions. The report identifies development work, but not a release date, Firefox version, authentication method or final interface. Chrome and Microsoft Edge do not currently offer an equivalent Windows feature, according to the report.
What Private Browsing Lock is supposed to do
Private Browsing Lock appears to be a local access-control feature for a private Firefox session. Its purpose would be to require an additional step before someone using the same Windows computer can open or view that private session.
That is different from ordinary Private Browsing. Private Browsing limits the browsing history and other session data Firefox leaves in its normal local history after the session ends; it is not the same thing as putting an active window behind a PIN, password or biometric check. The reported lock would add a separate barrier while the private session exists.
Mozilla has not established, in the available evidence, whether the final feature will use a Firefox password, Windows Hello, a PIN, biometrics or another method. It is also not known whether it will lock individual tabs, an entire private window or all private windows in a profile.

This comparison is specifically about locking access to a local private-browsing session on Windows. It does not mean Firefox would provide greater anonymity online, hide traffic from an employer or internet provider, or protect a computer from malware.
What Firefox already provides
Private Browsing
Mozilla documents Private Browsing as a way to keep browsing history and passwords private on a shared device. It reduces locally retained session traces, but anyone who can use an unlocked computer may still be able to see an open private window unless a separate lock exists.

Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks trackers and includes protections against harmful scripts and malware. Those controls affect tracking and page content; they are not an access lock for a browser window.

Global Privacy Control
Firefox also supports Global Privacy Control (GPC), which users can enable to automatically notify participating websites not to sell or share information about the browsing session on that website. GPC is a website-facing opt-out signal. It does not lock a local private window and does not prevent someone nearby from opening it.

What remains unknown about the release
- No supported Firefox version has been identified.
- No public release date has been established.
- The unlock method and recovery process are unknown.
- The final user interface and the exact scope of the lock may change during development.
- It is not established whether the feature encrypts profile data or protects private sessions after the computer itself has been compromised.
Because those details are unresolved, users should not rely on a specific PIN, password, Windows Hello or biometric workflow yet. Mozilla’s release notes or support documentation will be the appropriate sources for confirmed behavior when the feature ships.
How to protect private tabs on a shared Windows PC now
- Use Firefox Private Browsing. Open a Private Window from Firefox’s menu before visiting sites whose history you do not want retained in the normal browsing history.
- Close the private window when finished. A lock under development cannot protect a session that remains visibly open, and ordinary Private Browsing is not an active-window access control.
- Lock Windows when stepping away. Use the Windows lock command or sign out so another person cannot interact with the desktop session.
- Keep separate Windows accounts. Account separation provides a stronger boundary than sharing one unlocked desktop, although it does not replace device security.
- Wait for documented support. Do not install unofficial extensions or assume that a browser setting provides encryption, anonymity or protection from monitoring by a network operator.
Why the distinction matters
Mozilla’s privacy notice says Firefox processes some personal data on the device, including browsing history, web-form data, temporary internet files and cookies, unless the notice says otherwise. Keeping data on the device does not automatically make an active private window inaccessible to another local user.

Private Browsing Lock would therefore address a narrower but practical problem: preventing casual local access to an in-use private session. Tracker blocking, GPC and network privacy address different threats. Treating them as interchangeable could leave a shared computer exposed even when Firefox privacy features are enabled.

Firefox’s reported Private Browsing Lock could give Windows users a local barrier that Chrome and Edge currently lack, but it is still under development. Until Mozilla publishes the supported version, release date and unlock behavior, use Private Browsing, close sessions and lock the Windows account rather than assuming the unreleased feature is available.
